The journey of one thousand miles begins with a single step. This semester's Student Council has been mainly con- cerned with taking that first step. Our goal has been to unite our student body by installing in them a pride in their school and even more, a pride in themselves. However, twenty-eight stu- dents cannot unite a school, they can only lay the foundation and hope that the students will build on this foundation. The foundation has been laid---now we, the student body, must take that step not only together, but UNITED! Student Council of S'69 has inherited the tools and momentum to build from past councils' efforts. Now our task is to bring these together with the efforts of the student body to build a New Pride '69. The Build- ing has begun and can be seen in the re- sponsible attitudes of the students. Each of the twenty-seven council members pictured, has worked long and hard hours to build this pride. Boards Pave Closer Dorsey has a long tradition of having students give service to the school. Through the past se- mesters, Boys' and Girls' Service Boards have co-ordinated such activities as: the Service Sportnite, Service Award Assembly, the B 10 Orientation, Service Picnic and a Service Break- fast. Each semester, new activities are planned for the Dorsey service worker to keep the spirit and unityalive. A Www., ur f-Mfmfii-s 'P MMQEHQ Km!! El Way To Understanding This semesters Girls' and Boys' Personnel Boards have been one of the most progressive boards in years. The two boards along with the presidents, Karen Dinkins and Alan Shimizu, have worked very hard to plan unique and appealing activities for the Dorsey Student Body. The Abari Gani Howdy Day and Hawaiian Style homecoming were examples ofthe imagin- ative activities that were planned and sponsored by the personnel boards. wr ' i Q GIRLS' SERVICE BOARD Sponsor: Mrs. Geltner, President: Diane Anderson 1ST ROW: Lynn Kaneshiro, Karen Shin- agawa, Barbara Black 2ND ROW: Regina Ballard, Colleen Mori 3RD ROW: Barbara Smith, Gail Ozaki, Janice Nabara, Lori Lum, Florence Yee Girls' and Boys' Service Boards under the supervision of Mrs. Geltner and Mr. Fisher, respectively, have worked very diligently to coordinate their service pro- grams for the betterment of Dorsey. Hours of planning and brain-storming were necessary to prepare the many activities of the Service Boards. The Girls' Ser- vice Board planned the Orientation Assembly, Service Breakfast and Roundup. The Boys' Service Board planned the Clean Campus Week, Service Sportsnite, and Award Assembly. Together, they planned the Service Picnic for all service workers. K YM SPORTS Led by the charismatic coaching of Mr. Aaron Youngblood and Mr. Ralph Butler, Dorsey's Dons wound up the season with a 6-2 record. Coach Youngblood introduced his new system to the team and immediately assured his team that their goal was to travel along the road to the championship. Although the Dons lost sight of their goal and were pushed off the road, the Don gridders had a successful season. The Dons began the season against co-Eastern Loop champs, Roosevelt. Dorsey overcame a half- Varsity Football. time deficit as quarterback Ron Mays bombarded the Roughriders secondary for two touchdowns and a victory of 13-2. Chatsworth succumbed to the Don offense, 33-7, as halfback Larry Wright gained 184 yards in 8 carries and 2 TD's as he was city's leading rusher for the week. Poly, East Valley league kings, came to Dorsey and were bumped off 25-16 the following week. The Mays to Nery Watson combination dominated play as Watson hauled in 10 receptions for 160 yards and two TD's. r l r, -1' g g us if ti , ls. Many Wonders Of Girls' Sports Every Monday and Wednes- day after school, G.A.A. gives the chance to all girls to par- ticipate in sports that gives them relaxation and pleasure. Along with participating in sports, girls join in the fun of sportsday, where girls from other high schools come and share a day of fun. The high- light of the semester is the G.A.A. breakfast when girls receive their awards. Gee, where is one of those girls who sell the basketball tickets? I see them all over the school selling football programs, taking timings at sports activities, and running all around on Playday. I-ley, there they are! I guess they're planning the 3 Star Letterwoman assem- bly. I can tell them by their green letterwoman sweat- ers. l'Il get a ticket from Ellies Hihara, no, maybe Eimie Okida. Now I can't decide! Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter because all the money goes to the school fund anyway. Boy, it sure is handy to have G.L.S. around because their services sure do a lot. Learning To Live Together Let me introduce myself: my name is Rodrigo Canovas and my native country is Chile. I live with a wonderful American family. Empey's family and I have a real brother, John, who runs cross coun- try and track on Dorsey's team. I came to the U.S.A. to find the necessary weap- ons to develop my knowledge, so when I go back to Chile I will help to build a new society. Now, after being here two semesters, I can sin- cerely tell you that I found those weapons at Dor- sey. But, why at Dorsey? Not many foreign students have the chance to attend during one year a school where you can talk with young persons from different races and environments. CGouchl l'm really feeling every word l'm writing.J Dorsey has done many things from me. I won't say Thank you. Eight letters cannot express the deepness of my thoughts. The time won't easily erase the image of green and white, symbol of a dynamic youth, with personality and soul. I promise that one day in the future, even if I have to destroy myself, l'll make Dorsey the best school of America. Yes, I have plans!! .lust wait. Dorsey, I dig it: GIVE ME FIVE. Near the end of my A-11 semester I applied for the American Field Service program. After screen- ing by the student council and the Crenshaw AFS chapter, I was selected as a candidate from Dor- sey. My application was then sent in February to AFS headquarters in New York. After several months of waiting, I was notified that I was a fi- nalist. Then on June 14, 1968, I was notified that I was to depart L.A. International Airport on June 20 to live in Great Britain. After spending 10 fun filled days on a boat with 700 AFS students, I ar- rived to my home in Windermere, a small lakeside village 300 miles away from London. My AFS fam- ily, the Biden's, have two boys and one girl, Max 21, Mike 19, and Patricia 11. During those three months I spent with them we traveled and spent a lot of time together and developed a strong communication. Also during the month I as there I as exposed to many new things and sit- uations. It has been the greatest experience in mylife. Mark Suyeishi Dorsey Homecoming '68 Come Get Those Hawaiian lVlemories Aloha! Dorsey Homecoming '68 ini- tiated a fresh theme for a traditional event. Three years at Dorsey High School for the Les Choisis, or the Chosen Ones, have come to an end. For some of us, it is a happy endingg for others it is not so happy. But, nevertheless, we remember the many experiences we've had throughout these years. The trials and tribulations, the laugh- ter and sorrow, and the work and fun. We will someday realize how much Dorsey has meant to us. , The goal we have been looking forward to for so long has finally come upon us-graduation. As I think about it, I feel that it will be a happy ending for the Class of W'69. This unique class has pro- ven to be the most united and spirited class inthe history of Dorsey. I do sincerely mean this. She has left her mark and will proudly move forward on the path to a new and bigger world. I wish to thank my efficient cabinet, our sponsor, Nlr. Wil- Ioughby and of course, you, the Les Choisis for giving me the opportunity to serve you. Les Choisis. . .you are the CHOSEN ONES. LES ELITES S'69 Challenges We Shall Conquer Freedom We Will Share As the Summer Semester of 1969 comes to an end, so does an era for the many students who are a part of the graduating LES ELITES class of DORSEY HIGH. Departing is viewed with both sorrow and happiness. The sor- row is felt when expressing the two most difficult words known -----GOOD-BYE-------. Good-bye seems such a simple phrase, but when saying it to those whom you're unassured of see- ing again, it becomes the most difficult phrase to use. Yet, hap- piness is felt when looking back at all the memorable occasions we've shared together as Dons and Donnas, now Seniors. On behalf of Senior Cabinet: Dor- etha Winn, Secretary: Sylvia Washington, Treasurer: Douglas Yasuda, Boy's Vice-President: Henrietta Elmore, Girl's Vice- President: and myself, Gregory Franks, President, I would like to thank you as fellow Seniors for your support and even more for making this semester the success it was. In closing, stand firm to your motto--and never forget Chal- lenges we shall conquer. ,. Freedom we will share. Thank you, Gregory Franks, President V ...,l, .. He is your friend which you sow with love, and reap with thanksgiving. You come to him with your hunger and you seek him for peace. And when he is silent, your heart ceases not to listen to his heart. For without love in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared with joy that is unacclaimed. . When you part from your friend, you grieve not, For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer on the plain. And in this sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasure. For in the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.
