The two most popular courses taken by college prep students, essential for their major, are shorthand and typing. Business law, bookkeeping, salesmen- ship, office procedures, business mechanics, transcript, business English, merchandising, student accounting and secretarial work are also offered to help students in their pattems of life. Heading work experience, Mrs. Fortun, takes students through a network ofjobs to help attain more knowledge of the world ahead of them. Mr. John Viverito Mr. Chadwick Woo 13 Mrs. Franklin. counselor and Apex-Coordinator. is busily signing a change of program for a lost and forlorn student. Questions, questions, questions from the students, the parents, or the teachers, are asked every day in the Counselors' Office. The counselors are required to be prepared to answer a variety of questions concern- ing individual programs, vocational op- portunities, college requirements, and available scholarships, not to mention the answers to individual student problems. Confusion is part ofevery student's high school experiences, and it is in the Coun- selors' Office where some of this confusion disappears. The Counselors are constantly striving to help each student clear up problems. Thus it is not surprising to hear someone exclaim: HI don't know what I'm doing. Subjects as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are a part of the world of knowledge being offered to each Dorsey student by the Science Depart- ment. Headed by Mr. Misumi, the Science Department works with one basic goalg that is to share with their students the knowledge of the many scientific fields around them. Through the combined efforts of students and teachers, we can look forward to a strong pattern in our scientific educa- tion, and a world of tomorrow. l9 44 f' e'- ee 'ew Social Studies Listen my children and you will hear ofthe midnight ride of Paul Revere Mr. George Hamilton Mrs. Ednamae Doran Did you know that President Tyler died on a hot day because he drank too much lemonade? Pres. Student Body Treas. llth Grade Rep. STUDENT COUNCIL A number of hardworking council members have made their presence evident on the W'68 Student Council. Among the most vocal were Linda Butcher and Greg Iwataki Senior B and Senior A Presidents respectively. Their disagreements over the senior prom will long be remembered by fellow council members. Both faithfully represented their class throughout the semester. Another notable member of this semester's council was Ilene Rockman, the Dorseygram Editor. Ilene worked unceas- ingly to continue to turn out the school newspaper even though the Dorseygram Staff was undermanned and without its regular sponsor. Don Murphy, the Student Community Vice President was responsible for initiating a plan to reorganize the House of Representatives into districts. His idea will alleviate the crowded inefficient character of the present House of Reps. Don's imaginative thinking was characteristic of this semes- ter's council. Student Council this semester was under the able leader- ship of Bertran Cooper. His dedication to the school will be long remembered by teachers and fellow students. Bert is certainly a credit to his school and the oflice of Student Community President. Unfortunately the Student Council is often the brunt of campus jokes and criticism. However, it is the Dorsey Students only opportunity to exercise any control over events at Dorsey. Activities set up to accomplish our goal were planned and coordinated by various committees on our council. I would like to take this time to thank my council and the student body for the spirit they exhibited in upholding the activities. Your pride was displayed when you maintained continuous interest in activities as Dixieland, the clean campus campaign, and especially your interest taken in the new clubs on campus. We had to adjust to a new sponsor, a new time schedule, and the problem of who was leaving Dorsey to go to Crenshaw faced us. I also feel that if we had more sound communication with the girls and their support behind us, we could plan more successful activi- ties forthem. Our main projects were the Howdy Day Sportsnight and Circle activities, Homecoming Festivities and Dance, work on Dress Code Week, and tenth and eleventh grade Lets Talk ses- sions. l only hope next semester's president can fulfill the goal of the board: to help promote spirit. encourage a school unity through participation, and serve in beneficial ways, the Donnas of Dorsey High. Some spend time helping at lunch or nutrition, others before and after school, and still others during football games, evening activities, or during a class period. Whenever the time, each club must also function as a part of the total Service Program. Through new and interesting activities we hope to bring the clubs closer together, thus strengthening our program. This semester we have planned a Serve-Us Breakfast to culminate Girls' Week and honor the outstanding girls who give service to our school, but never receive recognition. Our Service Pot-Luck will be highlighted by the sportsnite to follow which will be the first in two semesters. A new activity, a service picnic, is being sponsored by the two Service Boards at Elysian Lodge. The idea is to have fun and friendly competition between all clubs. The changes began with an attack on the communica- tion problems. The task ofcommunication between the clubs and the board was solved by making each girl on the board a direct representative of one of the major service clubs. Pace '68 , the service newsletter, was created to give the clubs a media through which they could communicate among themselves. The board has worked on several projects and has accomplished some important goals. The first accomplishment was the complete organization of the G.A.L.S. club into an independent service organization. Our next activity was the Girls' Service Round-Up. The theme was Service Eat- in. This pot-luck dinner occurred on Halloween Night when approximately 200 girls gathered in the Girls' Gym and got acquainted. Our final activity was the Service Reward Assembly which was planned in conjunction with the Boys' Service Board. At this assembly the boy and girl service workers gathered in the Auditorium where the awards were given followed by entertainment by The Gang, a band and vocal group. Our board has worked dilligently this semester in hopes of improving and making the Service Program more appealing in the eyes of the Dorsey girls. We hope that our efforts have been appreciated. Activities in which boys can serve the school includeg taking service posts, and ushering at Homecoming, graduation, assemblies, and athletic events. Boys' Service Board is responsible for the Clean Campus Campaign, which enjoyed its longest and most extensive run this semester. New activities were held throughout the semester including the lst Clean Campus Queen contest, the teacher popu- larity contest, and circle rallies. In addition to planning many improvements for the Service Sportsnite and the Service Award Assembly, the board is having the first Service Picnic, which will be held at Elysian Park for all service workers and their dates. ' fwlnraug ,,, , , Cabinets Are ptimistie bout Semester Debbie Leung, Dean Nabori, Teresa Yokoyama Sammy Yee, Brenda Pillors, Gary King, Adrienne Sainten, Pamela Hayes, Michele Tom, and Janice Nabara CABINETS Tenth Grade Cabinet has an optimistic look for this semester. The highly organized cabinet meets once a week to discuss future plans. The main function of the cabinet is to plan class activities, build school spirit, represent its class in student government, and act as a source of communication between the tenth grade and Student Council. One of the activities for the sophomore class is a talent show, followed by a party for those who participated in the show. Pamela Hayes, the tenth grade representative, explains that the biggest problem the cabinet has to face is the lack of school spirit among the students. If the students fail to show any enthusiasm to support or to participate in the activities which are planned for them, activities will never become successful. If the talent show is successful, it may open the door to more activities, not only for the tenth grade, but for the whole student body. What Dorsey needs is pride and spirit created through a needed participation in school activities. --..w. ., M.. .QA sv + T. -:mul l0th Grade Cabinet: Adrieene Sainten, Diane Takei. Monday of Sports Week featured a minorable Judo demonstration with Roy Sukimoto fNational Judo Championi, Mike Munemura, Bob Wong and Gene Lee. Tuesday there was an exhibition basketball game with Mr. Hamilton's Varsity Basketball team. A pro-golfer was on hand Wednesday to demonstrate his special skills in the circle. Mr. Myron Gerber's talented gym- nastic team provided an exciting climax to Sports Week with a demonstration in the boy's gym. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Don Murphy, student body vice president, is the man who at present holds the key to the future success of the House. The main objective of the House is to abolish student apathy, strengthen its means of communication with the students and also erase the do nothing image which was set by the past House of Representatives. This semester there were two joint meetings between the council and the House. The purpose was to exchange information and give the members of the House a chance to support various ideas which were expressed by fellow students. The House of Representatives has come a long way in the past year, but this years' will prove to be the most successful in attaining their goals. The cul- tivation of spirit was first begun by the llth grade cabinet headed by former llth grade representative Debbie Leung. In that semester they established their class name, Les Choisis, their class colors of lime green and navy blue, and held two special activities: the junior picnic and a junior dance. Both proved successful. In their senior B semester something special happened. They won the approval for class cheerleaders. Now, the four girl cheerleaders chosen, Kim Branch, Linda Isum, Carol Inouye, and Elaine Wong and the two boy cheerleaders. Jeff Dohzon and Wendell Blassingame, will proudly display their colors and promote pride in their fellow classmates for their entire senior year. Each club forms its own pattern, through the diligent work of the officers and each individual within the club. These pat- terns are drawn together with such events as the Girls, Service Picnic, the Award Assem- blies and the semi-annual banquets. Yet, each pattern has a flaw, a lack of communication among the sudents' service clubs and the faculty and a lack of support from the general student body. In the coming semesters, we must strive to strengthen our patterns. HWalk together, talk together, 0 ye peoples of the earth, then and only then, shall ye have peace. The greatest experience during my AFS year has been attending an American high school such as Dorsey. Back home in Switzerland, I had dreamt of worlds where black, yellow, white, and red humans live peacefully together. In the Dorsey world, I found even funny green Charlie Browns and violet peppermint Patti's the spice of gay activities. I want to thank you for your interest and for letting me participate in everything. Thanks also for your understanding and help. I'll never forget you. When the A.F.S. informed me that I had been invited to attend Dorsey, I was pleased, but I did not realize what it would mean to me. As the year progressed and I became a member of the Student Body instead of a visitor, I began to realize the valuable qualities of Dorsey. I have been privileged this year to make many friends among you, to experience the quality of loyalty that is so evident here, to become aware of the mutual respect and responsibility shown to each other and lastly, I had the privilege to attend a school as Dorsey and I want to thank you all. Well, the student who asks this question is Certainly in the dark for he obviously has no knowledge of what it takes to win a meet. It not only requires that an ath- lete do his best but that he do better than thateeproduce that something extra. Ob- viously he cannot do this on his own, he needs the student body behind him. This is why we have Cheerleaders, to lead the students in cheering on the team. Larry Farrow, left, has that background because he has been working and creating music from an early age. He started his music career at the age of five while taking piano lessons at U.S.C. At the age of ll, he stopped and then resumed lessons at the age of 15. He also took violin but soon stopped because he couldn't stand the screeching. Within a year he has already written over 300 compositions. His major piece is called Gail's Moods. He now has his own group called the Larry Farrow Trio soon to go up north to perform. Larry hopes to get his doctorate in music. His ambition'?'?'?'? to be an arranger, conductor, composer, pianist, and teacher. -If Music: The Universal Language Ef?.Eii'f Throughout time different types of mu- sic have been enjoyed by all people. The Music Department here at Dorsey creates a busy pattern of activity. Under the di- rection of Mr. Albert McNeil, the students have performed in various places. This semester's material has been based around Sergio Mendez compositions, Jazz, and Negro spirituals. The choral groups will be appearing all over Los Angeles as well as taking part in a live television performance with George Shearing. This past semester, Dorsey took part in the Apex program in which students from Hamilton, Fairfax, Manual, and Cren- shaw came to Dorsey as Dorsey is the center of music in the program. Through this program, students come here to get a better understanding of music apprecia- tion. Chamber Singers: ROW I: Jeff Dohzen. Pat Kerley. This truth was made evident by the spec- tacular team effort shown by the men of the Dorsey track team. It has been ha- bit for us to name the out- standing performers of the track team, but since there is such a concentration of in the team it greatness would be futile for us to name the outstanding per- formers. An outstanding attribute which every member of the Dorsey track team possesses is spirit, spirit which binds all together with a common tie so that they may emerge victorious from each meet. This factor bears witness to the belief that where there is unity and spirit, there is strength. And it's no wonder that we are able to say We're a Winner . Dorsey's powerful l-2 punch of the mile relay, unite with the 3rd and 4th man to give Dorsey that edge which it's had on league all season. 1 SJ! Yet, nowhere at Dorsey can a richer, more rewarding experience be obtained. During my term of office, I found that I was faced with one of the most demanding responsibilities that can be bestowed upon a student. That responsibility was to make this last semester the most satisfying, fun, and inspirational, the most remembered one of our three year stay at Don Town. In fulfilling this obligation there was one term, one object or quality, which ever you might call it, that stood out as the key to it all , . , class pride. As I think back I can recall many, many instances when that pride seemed to be no more. But somehow, in the final evaluation, I could only say that Les Chatelains, Class of W'68 were endowed with total pride for one class. Serving as President was undoubtedly the greatest honor I experienced at Dorsey and I thank my class for giving me the chance. To Dorsey, I can only say that the past is gone, never can it be CHERYL AN GREG PATTER A VERY SUCCESSFUL E IORYE R. re-lived, but the memories . , . the Les Chatelains and l will never forget. Spirit Boosters of he Lively Setii ,A iid .QL K fi As we all look back and reflect upon the last 3 years, we are filled both with joy and sorrow. To a few people, graduation will mean the end of a lot of anguish, but to the rest of us, it will mean leaving one main stepping stone in life behind, to enter the world of tomorrow. But whatever your feelings are as you depart, you will never forget the experiences and knowledge you have gained today. We, as seniors proved to the rest of Dorsey, that the Les Desprecians truly had pride in their class. Overcoming many obstacles, we never gave up, and through that determination we were able to obtain our goals. Late as it was, our soul and spirit really rose when we got back the priviledge of class cheerleaders. With their help and the support of our class, our senior week was a total success, along with our talent show, and field day. I will never forget the experiences, both heartaches and joys I had in holding this office. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you, I will always treasure it. Thanks to the dedication of my hardworking whose perserverance helped me immeasurably, and to Mr. Willoughby, my sponsor, who was always there to lend a helping hand. Because of this, an efficient Bll Cabinet is needed, and that is the name for this semester's cabinet. Last semester the class was under the leadership of 10th Grade President, Pamela Hayes. NOTE FROM THE EDITORS: Work and constant elfort are the main themes for any annual stalT. But for the 1968 annual staff, our effort was carried out to its full extent. This year we had the opportunity to have color pages and also the chance to add 36 extra pages. The success ofthe annual would not have been achieved without the assistance from Roberts Studios and Mr. Robert Hopkins, American Yearbook Representative. Last, but not least, we would like to give our sincere thanks to Mrs. Sheila Grillin.
