6 6 345514 This man is the spirit of Dorsey High School. He is a very substantial spirit in many ways. Generous in proportions, he is nowhere more generous than in the region of his heart. He is an unusually well-rounded man. He has developed a formula that professional perfume-makers covet, he can furnish on request-or offer out of the goodness of his heart-any rare and costly scent from Russian leather to Chanel Number Five. His upraised hand is a familiar sight: it holds a gun at football games and track meets, it proffers a candy cane or lollipop at Christmas, where without benefit of pillow stuffing he was Mr. Santa Clause to generations of Dorsey Students, it grasps a spatula on Senior A days, where amid barbecue smoke, in apron and oversize chef's cap, he appears as the good genie of all picnics. Breast pockets bulging with choice items from his extraordinary collection of pens and pencils-over 500 in all-he trundles across the campus, a wide smile greeting his many student and faculty friends. He has somehow found time too for a rich community life. Not everyone receives as a crowning achievement for his efforts the silver beaver medal, the highest adult award possible in Scouting, nor a P,T.A. Life Membership for extra ordinary community service. As independent as Kit Carson, he even chose his own first names! Loath- ing his given name, in first grade he substituted one he liked better. He joined a circus troupe when he was twelve and barnstormed over the coun- try. He saw life and the world from the decks of a merchant ship and later, a navy vessel. He played football, opponents still sadly recall attempts at trying to move him from his position in the line. Stage-struck, he worked backstage in large New York theaters as scene-shifter, electrician, prop- man, ln the Twenties, he came to Hollywood to join the movies. Fortunately for Dorsey, he decided to become a teacher. Though highly respected in his profession as a mathematics consultant he gave up executive work because he preferred working with students to working in an office. Among the wise and humorous saying adorning his bungalow walls is one symbolic of his influence at Dorsey. Come in and have your spirits lifted. It is to this man-Charles Curtis Fabing-that we dedicate our yearbook. ,kj - -.,.,. , L.
