The line was sparked by Stu Hibbard and Jerry Fisher and Warren Stephenson looked good in the backtield. dorsey 25 lremont 52 In a battle of touchdowns the Fremont Pathfinders outlasted the Dons in Dorsey's sec- ond league clash. The game was a wide open passing aFfair with Dorsey's Phil Stewart chalk- ing up 345 yards in completing I9 for 30 passes. Three of which were T. Looking good were Hahn, Stewart, Tave, Binder and Del Campo. dorsey 12 washington l3 A tired-up Dorsey team lost a tough de- cision to the Washington Generals. The Dons, in their best eFFort to date, showed signs of winning early in the game. Dorsey recovered a Washington fumble and marched to the Gen- erals' seventeen yard line where Phil Stewart threw a touchdown pass to end Clayton Tave for the Dons' first T. D. Washington came back with two T. D.'s to lead going into the 4th quarter. Then the Don's started to march. After several pass-plays, Dorsey moved to the Gen- erals' ten-yard line, where a screen pass to full- back Warren Stephenson clicked for the T. The remaining two games saw a lack of experience rather than ability in losing to Jefferson and Los Angeles, I4-7 and 20-0 consecutively. The team boasted a strong defense with Kay Sakata and Bill Bailey stopping long gains with speed and sure tackling. The line consisted of Oscar Matsushima, Bob Craig, Kanji Watanabe, Steve Takara and Henry Carr. Linebackers Don Spigner and Mike Shaw performed admirably. SCHAPER 1, ,, ww... .. o As most of you know I have been around Dorsey since last September as an exchange teacher from the Netherlands, to take Mr. CaIhoun's place for a year. Many people ask us lmy wife is here tool, what we think of America, which is impossible to answer, and more particularly, what my ex- periences have been with the Dorsey kids lstudents in your official languagel. Now this last ques- tion may be answered here, since this refers to a situation in which I have worked these past months. To be entirely accurate-but who is in Dorsey, except the Administration and some class secre- taries?-I should tell you about my experiences with each of the five hundred pupils I became ac- quainted with in my classes. So I rather risk to be inaccurate and talk about some of my general impressions, comparing them by myself, of course, to the situations back in Holland, When I plunged into High School life the first day of school I felt the thrill of a big adventure. The first week actually had not much to do with teaching and I had quite a job getting used to the difficult enrollment procedure, with lots of paper, instructions, bulletins, blanks, forms, slips, white, ye low, green and pink, checking in and checking out, attendance, vice principals, counselors and what not .,., But some of the neighboring teachers and, most of all, the students themselves who I dimly ' ' ' ' d th began to recognize as the team I had to work with, were very helpful to get things organize e way they should, So finally we got our books, held class elections for olticers-a very good institution new to me -and could get started. The textbooks were as new to me as they were to the students, so I decided to mix Dutch and American ways of teaching. A striking difference in the pupils, compared to those at home, is the unselected character of the group, resulting in a great variety in abilities and habits. But this experience has only proven very interesting and stimulating to me. Whenever we discussed . . . . . - . . bl ' E I f nd a reat interest and was able to observe the results of the training in discussion technique, which ena es the situation in urope ou g the students to participate more actively in class activities than in Holland. As an experiment I assigned all classes to make a book report on a geographical or a historical subject and then I found that the use of the library and other sources had in most cases been very good, sometimes even excellent. On the other hand I found as a drawback a lack of background in the subjects I teach, Both in geography and in modern European history I had to start right fro m the bottom and could not assume any appreciable knowledge obtained in previous school- years. I also had some funny things to remember. We attended to some of the school's social evenings, in which I came to learn I1 ' f th ex ression strictly drag lit surely was 'I and when I found that, to my surprise, the teachers present were t e meaning o e p .... not there on the students' invitation, but on duty , . , One day in class I was telling the pupils how you escort your date home on a bicycle in Holland. Incredible? When I tell my pupils back h perience: not long ago an unexpected fire alert caught me and class in the middle of a test .... To conclude, I have had a wonderful time here and will often remember this interesting year at Dorsey High School, ARNOLD SCHAPER ome about dating in big cars they will hardly believe me!
