I O The fall of 1950 saw but one veteran performer returning from Dorsey's great squad of the previous year-Bill Van Alstyne. So the primary iob of the coach was to start building. From the material at hand there was little hope for any kind of standard showing in inter-school contest. We failed to place in either the fall Speech Teacher's Assn. Festival held at Eagle Rock High School or the state- wide U.S.C. Invitational Tournament. A few capable speakers were uncovered for second semester debating as the result of an intensive inter-class debate tournament. Bruce Fitzgerald and Dave Randel won with Marc Brenner and Gerald Lowdermilk taking second. Extemp speakers showed fairly well when over 30 speakers talked to ll,OOO pupils in Dorsey's Community Chest Area. The spring semester is largely one of service clubs oratorical contest. Currently Dorsey is engaged in the annual American Legion Contest with Don Poyres, Ed Lambert, Don Enholm, Bill Van Alstyne and John Bourne. Entered in the Lions Club Contest be-state-wide lwon by Bill Van Alstyne last yearl are William Wittenberg, John Bourne, Don Enholm, Don Telec, Lillian Tobey, Larry Nilson, Rodney Supple, andBrad Pischel. The great Hearst contest on Americans of disctinction is in the offing with no tryouts yet having been held. It is believed that the present speech efforts at Dorsey will provide the several needed speakers who have and know team spirit about whom a squad of able speakers can be built. . The Hamilton gridders kept the game at a tie score, but the Dons continued fighting for a tally and finally put the game on ice to get the 1950 season off to a roaring start. l rllglr The Don Varsity crumpled the L. A. eleven 22-6, with a merciless running attack at Rancho. We spotted them their 6 point score by fumbling on our 36 yard line to them, Then they scored in two more plays to rack up their lone score. That was about all for L. A., and Dorsey took over: Rex Benham, Doug Brokert, Dick Holliday and Harry Ellis played most of the game with lots of fire. 70 The Dorseyneleven hurled a rough game at the Uni gridders to the tune of 20-O at Rancho. The Dorsey team played a terrific game against the Warriors who boasted many returning lettermen. Our backfield featured many running plays through- out the game, which were sparked by our backs Holland, Singer, Lucostic, Grall and Leanse. The standouts on the line were Benham, Brockert, Doss and Robinow. Dorsey launched a devilish ground attack against the Shieks of Hollywood to chalk up another win. The scores were had in the third and forth quarters of the game. One spectacular touchdown play was made by Rich Henderson who snatched the ball right out from under the Shieks noses for a 6 pointer. Outstanding players were Singer, Ginsberg, Henderson, Leanse, Grall, Doss, Brockert and Benham. ai! The Dorsey l l met their last opponents, the Fairfax Colonials. Only to beat them in their usual way putting us in second place league standing. The great running power of our backs showed no mercey on the Colonials as the fighting Dons racked up several scores. Outstanding players of the game were Leanse, Singer and Ginsburg. Our unbeaten Dons met a stone wall at the hands of Venice, who trimmed us 35 to 25 at Rancho for our first loss of the season. Venice scored 3 of its 5 touchdown by pass plays. The Don eleven was weak in the air, the terrific running and drive of our backfield which was lead by Joe Lucostic and Nathan Leanse tallied up a fine score for us. Phil Dano brought spectators in the stands to their feet when he tallied for the bombers early in the second quarter. This touchdown broke the back of the Hamilton Midgets and the brilliant play of all-league Frank Caramelli, Warren Apply, Bill Hudleson, Sandy Malnick. Luther Green's line plunges also helped a great deal. DORSEY 31-UNI O. The Bees clobbered a weak University team by a high one-sided score. The Bombers had college form in this game and it seemed that nothing could stop them. Luther Green, Bobby Edwards, Frank Caramelli and Sandy Malnick headed our attack. DORSEY 25-HOLLYWOOD l9. The Dorsey Bees met the Shieks, on Rancho and racked up another win in the Dons favor. There was a tie score until the last minute of the game when Frank Carmelli passed in his usual good form to Malnick who blasted his way into the end zone to break the tie and lead Dorsey to another victorious stomp.
