Like Ernest Carroll Moore, she was an earnest, hard-working pioneer, an honor to education in Southern California. Mrs. Dorsey was Superintendent of Los Angeles Schools from l92O to l929 She was head of a system which was just beginning to expand at the rate to which we have now become accustomed. This fine lady, after her retirement was a frequent visitor at Dorse th I Y: 9 only school in Los Angeles named for a living person. Until her death Mrs. Dor- S r . d I . . . ey emame a ert and keen. Once, at an assembly in her honor, it was notice- able that she could not walk as fast as a younger person. She explained this seeming incapacity with real philosophy: lt is true that I cannot walk as fast as l used to, but l see so much more on the way. The l950 Circle honors the memory of Susan Miller Dorsey.

f ,f 9 ,, , ,, ,fs While we remember Susan Miller Dorsey for her contribution to education in Los Angeles, we remember Dr. Ernest Carroll Moore for his contribution, not only to education in Los Angeles schools, but to the higher education of Cali- fornia. Dr. Moore was Superintendent of Los Angeles Schools from l906 to l9l9, President of the State Normal School, Los Angeles, now Los Angeles City Col- lege, from l9l 7 to l9l 9, a professor of education and the Director of University of California at Los Angeles from l9l9 to l929, Provost, Vice-President, and professor of education at U.C.L.A. until l94l, when he retired. Like Mrs. Dorsey, Dr. Moore has always kept faith in human beings.As pro- fessor of education, he spoke at length about the Greek Ideal, a combination of idea and action, wisdom and practicality. Surely no one about us today has realized this Greek ideal more fully. He has been an idealist, a man of action. As one ofhis colleagues said ofhim: He proved that it is not radically impossible fora do-gooder to be keen-sighted and prfctlicalg we all know that it is extremely easy for a cynic to be a weakling and a oo .
