Flashback What better way to start out the long, dreary school year than by flashing back to the summer's lively activities that were so well enjoyed and are now so solemnly missed. A popular pastime with guys and gals was canoeing. The many lakes 1 in the area such as Lake Harriet. Lake Calhoun, and Lake Nokomis provided a nice setting for this and other amusements including sailing, tanning, picnicking, fishing. and swimming. Most of the canoers spent more time in the water than on it! Of course, there were a few who went with a quiet, peaceful after- noon of drifting with the current. The year of our first woman Vice-presidential can- didate, Geraldine Ferraro, and of Reagan beating Mondale. The year Prince came home to two sold out concerts at Christmas. I , v . ii? 3 f I LL iMun- x - . . ,, .y Anthonian Staff The Anthonian staff worked for over a year to plan and complete the revolutionary hardcover yearbook you are now enjoying. We began planning the I 984-85 yearbook in the spring of I984. Students agreed that they wanted a real book with a hardcover, one they could keep on a bookshelf. Ideas for better layouts exploded in our minds, and we conceived of the photo album theme that is developed throughout this book. The fall of l984 found us busy at work taking photographs, doing our summer reflections for the color pages. learning how to plan and design interesting layouts, going to yearbook workshops, writing copy. staying after school sometimes two and three days per week to get our innovative ideas down on paper. Eventually we met our fall deadlines, only to start again on the next sections coming due later. We held fund raisers selling class pictures and candy canes. We promoted the sale of the book with our classmates. Finally, we finished all of it with the help of our two hardworking advisors, Miss Laurie Tyson and Mrs. Corinne Robinson. Now we present it to the Class of '85, hoping you will look through it with delight and appreciation both now and in future years. Stu- dents in the eighth grade Mass Communications class worked hard to learn about newspaper production and newswriting as well as photography and how to make an original slidehtape show. You might think, What does UM-T-YMP stand for? Well, it stands for Universtiy of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program. Students qualifying for the program take Algebra I and II at the University of Minnesota every Thursday for two hours after school. And bring your music forth into the air. -Shakespeare The seventh grade choirs did exactly that, and they shone during their performances. They've done a class-act job! Under the direction of Mr. Frank Blanchard the seventh grade choir students studied many different types and periods of music. They practiced, learned to sing in parts, learned more about reading music, and learned to work together as a team both in small classes as well as in the very large massed music performance groups. Man y Anthon y students were busy competing in sports throughout the year either on special school teams, high school squads. or in activities within the Twin City area. Anthony fielded both boys' and girls' basketball teams that did well this season. Other students compet- ed on high school swimming and gymnastic teams for Washburn and Southwest High Schools. Anthony Ski Club members, led by Mr. Richard Rumppe. welcomed it. Once snothakes fell. the skiers bundled up in long johns. sweat- ers and coats and hit the slopes of Afton Alps Ski Area. Leaving school at 2:30 P.M., on Tuesday afternoons. ski club members talked and sang their way on the bus ride to Afton. Once there they swarmed onto the ski runs with same taking lessons on the bunn y hill while others rode the lift to higher and harder runs. Frequent visits to the chalet helped warm them up and put food in their stomachs. On the bus ride home everyone tried to forget about any tests they might have the next day.
