Anthonian WeYre Looking Good Together In 381 The ANTHONIAN is published at Anthony Junior High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Don- ald Turkington, Principal. Sarah Beach, Editor-in-Chief Section Editors Sarah Almquist Angela Howard Ann Johnson Heien Jones Tina Masie5te Brandt Williams Tiffany Cole, Layout Editor Dave Wood, Cover Artist Mary Lathrop, AdviSor How do we look good together in ,81? We look good, because we are good. We are always the top school in all of the tests that they give. No other junior high does as well. We have proof that we learn. Athletically, we're the best. Just look at all our tro- phies. If they would just have let us play this year, we'd have added some more. And we're together. As friends, we care about each other. We Certainly Look Great In ,81! Entries And Editors There were more cover entries than ever before. After we voted, Dave's entry won, and these two were the runners-up. Sec- ond place went to Matt Fuller, left. Third went to Sean Mosley, right. Putting this book together wasn't all fun and games, but the editors had a lot of fun. John Dax, shown with us in these pictures, moved before he could help fin- ish the eighth grade section. Ann sure looks mad in the bottom photo. Faculty And Staff They direct us. They guide us. They scold and ttcorrectt, us. School wouldntt be school Without them. tI' . Dedication: Mr. Larry Brockel Kids respect a teacher who cares enough about them to demand the best. Mr. Brockel isn't an easy teacher, but he's a great teacher because he makes us do the best we can, and when we aren't quite doing as well as he thinks we can, he shows us how to do better. Whether it's in gym, the shops, or the halls, we can tell that Mr. Brockel likes us and wants the best for us. He's always teasing, talking to us, and letting us know he likes us. It's mutual, Mr. Brockel. Thanks to a super teacher, Mr. Brockel! Faculty And Staff Office Personnel Mr. Donald Turkington Principal Mr. R.C. Make a line to get on the bus . . . to go skiing . . . to practice jumping off the bus . . . to eat . . . to be frisked when we're leaving the library . . . and all of us go one way on the stairs. We're together all right. ! Entirr m mumps; And sometimes we get in a line and do the same things even when we don't have to. Do you think we've been brainwashed or do you think it's true that people our age have to do everything like our friends? Seventh Grade This year we discovered that you had to have a pass to go anywhere. It was a year of locks that wouldn't open, steps that went only up or down, and sev- en classrooms, teachers, and sets of rules to get used to. But we also discovered that we look good and are always to- gether because we're in the best junior high. It'll be nice to be the ones who are experienced when we come back next fall. In 1981 we wore ski jackets, print turtle-necks, and ribbons. See Dawn, Sarah, Chyrise, and Dawn making dinner while camping out as part of their Outdoor Environment class. Vija listens to our fantastic band, while the three on the left really did look good on Mismatch Day. Dave, Burl, and Peter show off English projects, while Tom performs, and Cathy brags about the clock she made in class. 22 Activities we had fun doing were dances those good active days in classes '3': . 3w .1 and successful projects. Who went around and took unfocused pictures? Who worked in A-Mart at lunch time and didn't make any sales? Who answered dumb letters? Who gave up their lunch to ask what eglantine meant? Who asked for ugly baby pictures? If you haven't guessed by now, we'll just have to tell you that it was the ANECDOTE staffs. macmomsy m Har-hm r+CD SEMESTER ONE STAFF - Row 1: M. Lundeen, D. Learning the switch boards was difficult, but we managed. Even though sometimes we got confused, and cut people off in the middle of their sentences, we always managed to get help from one of the clerks. A-Mart Staff We hated getting here early once a week when it was our turn to work, but we had fun, too. We hated telling people that we STILL didn't have the new order of compasses or penciI-top erasers in, but we liked handing out change, and writing passes. We'll all remember the fun of the practices after school, the fun of a successful evening's work on Friday, and the fun of the party. 32 The Orchestra is one of those groups that does something all of the rest of us wish we could do, but know we can't . . . . Of course, they tell us it's simple. All we need is talent, hours of practice, and a good director All of which this orchestra has. The kids come in every Tuesday to practice. The fallen music stand shows that Mr. Sandeen got especially violent during this rehearsal. If you walk by room 025 you can often hear him yelling Wrong note! or llWatch that key signature. But that's just all part of his method for turning us into a great band. The eighth graders are amazed at how good they've gotten in two years. At our concerts we really look and soundl good because he makes us do well. He really cares. The bands also thank Mr. Sandeen for not ony making us proud of how good we are, but also for making it fun, and letting us fool around a little bit once in a while. Under Mr. Austrums and Mr. Vevle, the group meets and does all those things that can't be un- derstood by the rest of us. We may not understand what they do, or why they seem to be doing it every night after school, and before school, but from watching them we can say for sure that THEY obviously know when, what, and why they do it, and they obviously have lots of fun with it. Chyrise Bay and Wende Dewing, the faithful members of the club. Obviously there's a guarantee that here we have the first and second place winners in the tournament. 37 Anthonian Staff Besides the editors, who listed themselves in front, here we are, the hardworking, intelligent- Iooking, bright-eyed, talented, beautiful people who worked a zillion hours to bring you this yearbook: Inga Broerman, Jocinda Fleeson, Bill Hipps, Keri lsaaman, Tasha Jagodzinski, Laura Schneider, Carl Shervey, Erica Spitzer, Carol Strand, Cindy Baago, Vija Brookshire, Denise Evert, Amy Fishman, Ann Follrath, Denise Fraction, Joann Hart, Ruth Heberle, Gretchen lverson, Janet Kantar, Sonya Larson, Melinda Lundeen, Kris Munson, Erica Olson, Cathy Patrykus, Amy Pensinger, Diana Schmidt, Nicky St. Dennis, Biz Thiel, and Carrie Umphrey Seventh grade section, eighth grade section, miscellaneous section, and activities section. Aren't you glad that THEY put the creative writing book together, and we do the yearbook? They sure do a much better job than we would if our poem is any indication! German Travelers This year Miss Slayton and four students from Anthony will be joining a group of Minneapolis students on a tour of Germany. Anticipating the trip by looking at a German map and waving a German flag - which you can't see lTake our word for in - are Cindy Baago, Mike Fugle, Kim Nuckles, and Kirk Peterson. 40 Student Council Q : Mr. Dull, Mrs. Schraeder, and Cathy Student Council really went from feast to famine this year. We certainly feasted on the charm grams charms and the prizes from the magazine sale . . . and starved for the African refugee fast. We had a tea for the teachers, and presents for the bus drivers. We organized the dances and planned the spirit days. Student Council really knows how to help us have that together feeling. Did Vija really win that radio selling magazines? 42 Intramural Sports From kickball to volleyball to basketball to floorhockey, we have a busy intramural sports season at Anthony. There are separate competitions for each sport, with playoffs, single, or double eliminations. Some things are co-ed, and some are boys and girls. Even if we couldn't have school teams, people take lots of pride in playing for their homeroom. f; i g l I bet you wonder if you're seeing double or if we made a mistake. iUs? Make a mistake? You've got to be kiddingD The real reason why there are two pictures of almost the same people - test your powers of observation --- you have 5 seconds to spot the kids who are different - is that home room 100 won BOTH the volleyball and kickball championship. This is volleyball, Peter, not dancing! 1 y Sort of in clockwise fashion: Mr. Brockel, Brenda Ellis, Elayna Rucker, Una Arlanson, Kris Davis, Missy McGinty, Kathy Davis, Maria Lupori, Vija Brookshire, Sue Gjerset, Debbie Davis, Laurie Coleman, Angelique George. Don't be afraid, Mr. Suchomel! It won't hurt. C;irlst Basketball The girls' team was fantastic last year and took the city championship. This year, too, Mr. Brockel felt that he had a great team. Even if they hadn't repeated the championship, Mr. Brockel said that they were winners all the way. Unfortunately when the city's budget was temporarily reduced by the state, the junior high athletic season was eliminated by the downtown office. Mr. Brockel had already chosen his team from the many hopefuls who had tried out, so even if they didn't get to play, we wanted to show you what a team of winners looked like. Ski Clubs We remember the great times we had with the downhill ski club, although there wasn't much snow. We remember the time our skis fell off, and went down the hill without us. And we recall that there wasn't much snow. Remember the times you went up the lift, dropped your pole, and fell in the ice trying to get off? There really wasn't much snow. We remember the long, crowded bus rides, and the time our bus stalled, out in the middle of nowhere. It was then we were thankful there wasn't much snow. And now about cross country skiing. What were all those announcements and permission slips and plans? Mr. Hayden found out there really wasn't much snow! Q; :5! 5h! i3 twt We made plans for several trips, waxed our skis, and then found out that there really was NO snow. This year we were the oldest and most experienced, and we noticed that the seventh grad- ers seemed smaller than we ever could have been. We went to the dances, thought of better excuses for being late, not having our work done, talking in class, etc. We tried to get lots of life-saver grams during the week. This had to be the best year of junior high. 46 Eighth Graders ARE Special! One of the best things about being an eighth grader is being able to take some of the fun classes we only heard about last year. We're only ACTING scared in Speech and Drama. Al- most all of the pictures in this book were taken by kids in Mass Communications Class. You heard about the kids in Adolescent Sexuality who carried around eggs for a week? Going on two campouts, one over three days of school, was a privilege the students in Outdoor Envi- ronment had. lBelowl Across the page you see just some of the great projects made in Wood, Metals, and Graphic Arts. Sewing is also great! 7:; a my 48 This was the year 01 Wh0 shot J R? Braiding our hair Wearing yellow ribbons and feeling patriotic Getting our braces on or off Wearing printed turtlenecks all the time Being good at all we did. Being together in all we did. What made 81 unique? Mr. Mackay gets surprised on Bus Driver appreciation day with an original note and a present. And it all started out as such a nice birthday party for John. What a way to celebrate. kw;me 3 , Having fun and having friends in junior high. What made 81 great? Farewell! well See You All Next Year. Our year in seventh and eighth grade was a great one for most of us. We belonged to a group of students who were together in everything they did most of the time. We continued the schooi's reputation of always being the best. We have a history of top grades, winning teams. We are part of the year 1980-81. This year was one of individuality. It was a year of doing your own thing, yet staying on top of new styles. New ideas surfaced, while old ideas made new comebacks. Among new ideas were Izod shirts, printed turtlenecks, designer jeans, New Wave, and Punk Rock. The comebacks included braids, the preppy look, and the return of penny loafers. With the return of the hostages came the yellow ribbon around the old oak tor maple or eimt tree, and the nation regained its patriotic attitude. This year was one of new experiences for many of us, joined with the old to create a new style of living. It was a year of changes, some good, some bad. it was a year we'll always remember. We look forward to next year and the years to come, wondering what they have in store. -- v.b.
