Anthonian '79 -- The Best Time -- '80 V trimaran: Isnv i n BeSKrithBedersen Deanna Alevizos Denise Evert Lisa Kroiss Tom O'Rourke, Cover Artist Karen Sammond Ellen Smart Mark Spitzer Mary Lathrop, Advisor Best Times Throughout this book you will see clocks which kids made in Mr. Heaney's classes. These clocks tell us that it's time to look back and remember the fun times, the bad times, the rowdy times, the quiet times. This year, 1979-80, may just be one of the best times of Our lives. This page from the top: Is the best time of our lives. This page from the top: is the best time 2:25 when it's time to leave? Or is it when we carry in the flags to the concert? Or maybe it's when we proudly show off the totes we created in Miss Schwan's class or check our creation from Miss Barnes' class. Maybe the best time is WHiLE we make the clocks or metal projects. Most of us think it's when we get back our work with an A . Next page: Remember the time there were three broken wrists in the same gym class? Or the time we all got together to show off our clocks? Or the times we won our basketball games by embarrassingly high scores? Or the time we ali got A's on our tables? Remember the time gum was banned? And Shawn got by with chewing it? But we're happier when we make something we're proud of t 7 like this Kiss display for art, the shirts for Mr. Brockel or great music for Mr. Sandeen. Nobody knew we made these blouses ourselves . . . except Miss Schwan who gave us an A. - But the times we like best are the times we're with good friends, like in the last picture. .Mm . 411 t u; Faculty And Staff Time to meet the faculty and staff. Sometimes it seems like we spend too much time with them ... and when we try to pass a test on something they explained, it always seems we didn't spend enough. Mr. Donald Turkington Principal Administration Dr. Duane Eklin Assistant Principal Dedication You're the best, Mr. Austrums! You helped us through seventh grade math. You taught us powers, decimals, and equations. You always have time to listen, tell a joke, tease us, and be our friend. In the halls you smile. You show us you care, and when we need to talk to a friend, you talk to us. You always let us know when you're proud of us. And so, Mr. Austrums, we're proud to dedicate the 1980 ANTHONIAN to one of our best faculty friends and to one of the world's greatest math teachers, you! - M.S. In seventh grade we ieamed that school runs by time and belis and that you'd better be where you're supposed to be on time. They say Don't run, but then they give us detention if we're not on time. We learned that there was a time when you could get candy in school and it was okay if you earned it selling magazines for the Student Council. David's clock shows us it's time we started getting in the mood for school . . . . and school means not only work, but activities, too. And most of us like the activities we do during school and after school a lot better than we do the classwork. Here, Mark looks excited about something he did in chess dub and Berit gets ready to take some more pictures for the yearbook. Any time we spend on activities is almost always good time. Boys Basketball Row 1: Nathan Lundeen, John Bacig, Pat Chan, Jim Mandell, Mike Palbicki, Peter Tiedemann, Cary Puckett. Row 2: Coach Gerber, JR. Baumann, Chuck Solomon, Ted Samsel, Ralph Jackson, Tony Day, Charles Williams, Jeff Emmons, Dale Topps Our team didn't have as many wins as last year, but coach Gerber said it was his best team. They tried hard, they had fun, and they came so close, so many times. All in all, their record didn't indicate how well they really did. Our basketball team is great and number one to all of us! 'NWIW Under Coach Thom these girls played volleyball this year: Melody West, Sonya Williams, Sarah Adams, Sheree Miller, Lynn Santelman, Beth Ostergaard, Liz Johnson, Connie Bennett, Kelly Bardwell, Denise Fraction, Jenny Wacholz, Jaana Bruce, Amy Berwald, Karla Hermodson, Ann Slawson, Kelly Carin, Jenny Vavra, Tammy McEachren, Ann Tisdale and Cathy Patrykus. The volleyball team was great! It won the championship of the regular season, having only one loss to a tough Olson squad. It made it to the playoffs, and then only lost in three tough matches to Olson to win the second place trophy. kw HON; 0 7 We're the best there is in the city! In the first GlI'lS BaSketball year that girls have been allowed. to compete, , we beat everybody to become Clty champs. VV 8 re Number one! Some we stomped, some we came from behind to win, but we told them all we're best! Row 1: Missy McGinty, Stephanie Bergerson, Carolynn Bell, Melody West. Row 2: Michele Dahl, Lynn Santelmann. Row 3: Vija Brookshire, Maria Lupori, Heidi Beske, Tracy Konigson. Row 4: Sarah Adams, Peggy Flanigan, Connie Bennett. Row 5: Debbie Davis, Elaine Emmons, Kelly Bardwell, Coach Brockel. Intramural Champs We had great times in our intramural games. This year the phy. ed. teachers worked it out so that even if the rest of your homeroom were bad sports that's a pun, folks .... you still got to play. We had kickball, volleyball, and basketball. tUnfortunately the poor basketball players didn't finish in time to get pictures in. QKKKX Cross-Country Skiing Skiing has always been the most popular after-school activity at Anthony, with more than 200 kids wanting to join Mr. Caldwell for down-hili skiing. This year the down-hillers had two series 6f trips, both of which were very popular. But the fact that we even have cross-country skiing is a sign of both its growing popularity, and of the power of the press. Yes, the Anecdote! The cross-country ski group got started when three seventh grade girls wrote a letter to the editor asking why we couldn't have a cross-country club. Mr. Hayden, who is an experienced and enthusiastic cross-country skier, volunteered to advise the group. But, unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, and the group only got to go out about five times because it was raining, and you can't cross country ski on dirt. But the times they had were fun times and they look forward to next year. Where Are Their Heads? We asked Mr. Hayden to take some pictures for us, and he nicely agreed to do so. Mr. Hayden: You're a great math teacher, and a great cross-country skier, but as a photographer, well, you're a great math teacher and cross-Country skier! We had the Canned Food Drive, the magazine sale, Bus Driver Appreciation Day, the faculty tea, Spirit Week, Cambodian Relief, D-Day to help us quit smoking, and of course the dances. What we liked the most was the life-saver grams. The Student Council members went to the workshop at Stillwater held for the twin city and suburban junior high student councils. The money that we earned on the life-saver grams went to diabetes, cancer, and muscular dystrophy campaigns, to Willows Nursing Home, and to the needy within our building Life-Saver GramyD-Day M31 jt r: 1 a 3S 36 Orchestra Joe Noble, Rachel Villeneuve, Col- leen Broeckel, Sarah Stumme, Re- becca Cuningham, Jennifer Broth- ers, Dawn Holden, David Moore. Eighth grade was the time we finally got to do the things we just envied the older kids for last year. Here Bil! is with an entire group of pictures he printed in Miss Barnes' ciass.
