ZEZEEEFI '-fl-i3T ll Egg, Q - iv VISITING ARTIST ..-1 Bill Mansfield. 1985 Visiting Artist from the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges, is a home-grown Cnrolinian from Raleigh who plays tradi- tional ole time mountain music, combined with coastal folk music to achieve s sound that has echoed through North Carolina for years. Coming from it family containing several ole time ers. and inspired by his mother, Bill Mansfield began playing the jaw harp at age twelve. He then began playing the harmonica, looking for more sound for his music. In high sehonl, he fanned a string band and became interested in playing the banjo, In 1979, Mansfield, was awarded a grant from the Natinrmi Endowment for the Arts. The grant permitted him to study for six months under folk musician Fred Ccclterham of B-eiews Creek, NC. Bill Mans.field speaks highly ot' internationally known Coclterlurn. He taught me the emotion that accompanies the ole time style. said Bill Manstield. By the fall of 1930, Mansfield entered the University of North Carolina at Chlpei Hill and received 3 mas- ter's degree in folklore. During the summer months, he worked as a ranger at Cape Lookout National Seashore. Here, Mansiield helped tO Organize the Outer Banks Folk Feslitrll that consists primarily of musicians ofthe traditional ole time sound. From the coastal region of the stare, Mansfield leamed the songs of the ole timers of that area and plays many of the tunes in her performances He has even adopted Scottish bag-pipe tunes brought over by early settlers and plays these songs on the banjo. In 1982, he was accepted in the North Carolina Visiting Artists Program. The program is a four-year adventure that has carried Mansfield throughout the state giving him an opportunity to share the music taught to him by so many. june will end his tour as visiting artist and Mansfield feels that Surry County is the ideal location for his Fmale. He wants ro stroke the fires already buming here. He hopes to expose and attract the younger generation, and bring back the cle time sound that was bom here in the foothills and in the Blue Ridge Mountains. To do this would be to pass my final exam. stated 'Bill Manslield. As for long-term goals, the Visiting Artist wants to improve and expand his already impressive talent. Bill would like to see a revival ot' the cle time sound throughout the country. To return to the basics is hlansfields vision for rhe Country music lndustry. Many people think that artists play the cmw-hammer style nr ole rirne sound because they cnn't play anything else.
