In their spare time volunteers completed many worthwhile projects, such as the impressive hand painting by Mr. Floyd Culter of the school's wood-carved eagle. Mr. Charles Kirkman built the new trophy case which is displayed in the front lobby. Mr. Monroe Bowman, Mr. Wayne Edmonds, and Mr. Roy Vernon were responsible for the newly sown grass and completing the new chain-link fence on the baseball field. Mr. Ron Gilbert and many community businesses contributed to the athletic program. The Athletic Boosters participate: in many school improvement projects and donated 4,400 dollars to the school. Girls' Tennis Dedication akes A Team The tension built as the season started. Girls from last year's team couldn't wait to start sprinting, running, hitting, and fighting their way to the sectionals and possibly the regionals. The team's goals included winning at least five matches, enjoying the game, and playing to the best of the members ability. Slightly short of its goal, the team finished with a 4-9 season. According to Mandi Coe, a sophomore member of this year's team, Dedication and the Willingness to cooperate with players and coaches made a great team. Coach Mitchell felt that he needed at least 5 good runners capable of running close together in order to have a good team. Besides preparing members for competition, Cross Country builds strength, endurance, speed, confidence, and courage. It prepares the athlete physically, mentally, and psychologically to cover about 3 miles over any type of terrain as rapidly as possible. This strenuous training aided the team in coming in 12th in the state out of thirty-one 1A and 2A schools. Also aiding the team was Coach Mitchell's strong coaching philosophy of, Give good advice, provide team members with the best information possible, encouragement, and counseling appropriate to the level of accomplishment they desire to achieve. With a record of 1-9, the players never quit and kept a positive attitude. Coach Martin thought their greatest strength was the offensive passing game. We threw the ball well and the receivers caught well. In spite of the bad season, Coach Martin thought the team had . . . developed a little heart. We never quit in any game - the team put forth effort. There were a couple of games that showed improvement. Even though we lost, I thought we played super against North Wilkes, stated Coach Martin. Student Council achieved this goal by getting the student body involved in worthwhile projects, by representing the student body in school discussions, and by helping the student body to keep a high sense of pride in Surry Central. The Council also helped newcomers to the school as the I.C.'s escorted confused freshmen to their classes. Council members sponsored annual events such as I-lomecoming's week of activities and dance, class elections and the Twirp Dance. For Thanksgiving, they prepared 152 dinner for two families. Christmas projects included the annual canned-food drive competition against East Surry, which Central won with a total of 1716 cans, and Student Council provided for needy children through the Department of Social Services. Members also enjoyed the annual Christmas party. Other worthwhile projects included contributing to joy Ranch and collecting four hundred dollars for the Austin Ashburn Fund.
