WALLS . . . Contents Introduction 1 Honors 18 Participation 32 Administration 46 Classification 66 Competition 104 Conclusion 118 Sponsors 122 Herein lies the greatest, the most loyal. and the best there is. Upon crossing the portals of Surry Central, each one of us becomes a vital part, no matter how small, of a great institution that is far more than just a structure. Within these walls a teacher smiles, and a student ' s eyes light with under¬ standing. Here we first experience a sensation of belonging, a feeling that in itself makes continuous demands of each of us. Within these walls relationships bud that will endure throughout our lives. Here we learn to accept failure as well as success and add both to the building of our character. Here we first feel the pride of attaining a goal through our own honest efforts. Within these walls we are spending the most memorable days of our lives. These happy moments, as well as sad ones, are all deeply embedded in our minds and are recorded in this yearbook. 3

ROBERT SEYMOUR BURRUS December 1, 1899-May 23, 1967 IN MEMORIAM On Tuesday, May 23, 1967, the Surry Central,High School District lost a long-time and dedicated member a nd chairman of the school committee. Prior to the consolidation of the Copeland, Dobson, and Mountain Park schools, he served many years as a member of the Copeland School Committee. His passing was a great personal loss not only to his family and friends, but also to the teachers and students of our community. He was vitally concerned that Surry Central have a top- notch instructional program for its students and was one of the strongest supporters of the Athletic Program. Bob Burrus was a man with a keen interest in all civic and community endeavors. He believed in community de¬ velopment through better roads, schools, churches, and a Community College. His leadership, sense of humor, words of encouragement, friendliness, and his firm but gentle hand will be missed by all of us. 5
