This year Surry Central is very fortunate to have one of the best faculties in the history of the school. These teachers take an interest in student activities that is far beyond the call of duty. 35 There “ain’t” a better one --anywhere. Our English department emphasizes skills essen¬ tial to the management of language for effective commun¬ ication. Through oral and written composition, students learn to convey clearly their thoughts and feelings to a given audience. Mr. James McPherson, Mrs. Linda Brown, Mrs. Virginia Cooke, Mr. Wayne Nance, Miss Mary Frances Hodges, Miss Evelyn Holyfield, Mrs. Clara Strickland. Mrs. Brown makes English IV interesting. 30 Mais Oui, --of course we have a great French department. Ability to communicate effectively has never been more vital than it is for twentieth-century American youth caught in the strife of international affairs. French courses at Surry Central at¬ tempt to meet this need. French III students display bulletin board. Miss Mary Frances Hodges, Miss Evelyn Holyfield French I students take dictation. one of the most interesting . . . --departments in our curriculum is that of math. The chal¬ lenge to mathematics teachers to improve the mathematical skills of the students has never been more acute. The teachers at Surry Central are continually reorienting their program— not discarding the old merely for the sake of making a change but adapting content that is still valid and adding that which is required to meet new demands. Mr. Garnett Cox, Miss Mary Blevins, Mr. Christopher Crusenberry, Mrs. Ann Patterson. Boy! This new math is funny ! 38 Brave explorers --into the world of the unknown are the teachers in the science department. Surry Central ' s science courses are planned for the general education of all students and not for the express purpose of training scientists. The students are encouraged to be active investigators and to discover nature ' s secrets for themselves. Mrs. Clara Freeman, Mr. Charles Williard, Miss Mary Ellen Blevins, Mrs.Oma Norman,Mr. Christopher Crusenberry, Mr. Joseph Bradshaw. Mrs. Freeman arouses curiosity in biology students. 39 An effective social studies curriculum --can provide youth with a foundation for fostering competent citizenship in a democratic society. Students at Surry Central are acquiring knowledge, skills, and understandings essential for living in a changing society. Mr. Joseph Bradshaw, Mr. Trent Strickland, Mrs. Mary Ellen Graham. Mr. Bradshaw conducts active discussions in social studies classes. 40 Salesmanship . . . --is the key to our economy. At Central a study of human relations helps develop an understanding of the various types of personalities a salesman may encounter. Asdfjkl; Asdfjkl; The business education department has a program designed for the student who is interested in a career in business upon g r a d uat i on from high school or college. This year a new course has been added--applied business--which combines classroom study and practical training, thus giving the stu¬ dent valuable work experience while in high school. Mrs. Nellie Hill, Mrs. Ruby Stanley, Miss Ann Baxley. 43 A variety . . . --of opportunities is available to junior and senior boys in agriculture classes. There are specialized courses in livestock, farm mechanics, and horticulture. 44 Two years . . . —of physical education is offered at Surry Central. The main purpose of the department is to provide the best physical ed¬ ucation possible for every student in our school and to help him grow and develop intellectually, physically, morally, and socially. The physical education program alternates with health classes for the freshmen and with safety education classes for the sophomores. This part of the program provides opportun¬ ities for Students to gain knowledge and to develop attitudes and practices necessary to meet present and future health needs. Girls ' physical education classes enjoy intramural basketball games. Coach Charles Williard, Coach Gary York, Mrs. Margaret Bates Several of our girls enter a float for the homecoming parade. 45 Rev. Roy Johnson, instructor Driving . . . --is one course which, for obvious reasons, our students must not fail. Surveys show that drivers who have had driver train¬ ing have more than 50 percent fewer accidents than drivers who have not completed a driver education course. Mr. Gene Wagoner The function of chorus is to inspire and to enrich the lives of the youth at Surry Central. Its prime purpose is to equip each of its members to gain an insight into and an appreciation of music. 46 Today . . . --we prepare for tomorrow .Through our guidance department, students receive help in the planning for their futures.
