We Dedicate . . A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Brooks Adams The teacher ' s role is an infinitely important one in the shaping of young lives. And so to you. . . Who have guided us into new worlds of knowledge, Who have instilled within us an aesthetic appreciation for what so often seems to be the trivial and common place in life, Who have aroused in us curiosity about the world in which we live, Who have shown an understanding for our shortcomings and pleasure in our achieve¬ ments, Who have so often extended a warm helping hand to any one of us who would reach out, We, the Yearbook Staff of 1964, take great pleasure in dedicating this edition of t h e AQUILA to our teacher and friend, . . . Miss Evelyn Holyfield 3

Surry Central High School Foreword Veritas, Lux, Libertas— Truth, Light, Liberty These three concepts should be foremost in the minds of all students of Surry Central High School. Students are in a real sense seekers—seekers of knowledge, of wisdom, of truth. The open book is a well-known symbol of scholarship, a worthy goal. The 1964 AQUILA is a record of students who have attained some measure of success in this quest, and who, figuratively speaking, are eligible to wear the cap of liberty as a symbol of a mind freed from prejudice, from fear, and from ignorance. May the seniors and those who are to succeed them continue to study, to learn, and to serve—may they carry forward the searching lamp of truth that others may follow in its light. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.-John 8: 32 Then shall thy light break forth-Isaiah 58: 8 Table of Contents Dedication.3 Administration. 4 School Personnel and Student Staff.6 In Memoriam.9 Student Life.10 Curriculum.22 Seniors.38 Juniors.54 Sophomores.61 Freshmen.68 Organizations.74 Athletics.88 Adve rtisements.100 2
