As Samuel Pepys, the diarist who lived in London in the late sixteen hundreds, might have phrased it—the condition of our group, neither more nor less than six-hundred twenty, is at present noteworthy, all of us being exceedingly eager to apply ourselves to learning and bearing a desire to miss no days and waste no seconds. To make this year an exception¬ ally commendable one—this is at present the desire, the hope, and expectation of all. Blessed be God , when, at the end of this year, we read the pages of this, our diary, and find that we have never been in so good plight as to our health of both body and mind, and blessed be those whose names are recorded in these pages. And, having worked with greatest diligence, may we be able to say in the month of June in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred sixty-three, that we have faithfully made record of all occasions. And, now do we take in our hands the necessary tools and set about the keeping of our Journal . 11

dedication We, the Annual Staff of 1963, wish to dedi¬ cate this edition of THE AQUILA to a man who has done much in starting our school on the road to a promising future. The supervision of the academic program is but one of his contributions. He keeps a firm eye on attendance, on discipline, registration, guid¬ ance, and on extra-curricular activities. Yet he is never too busy to help a student in the special way that distinguishes the man with a purpose from the man with just a job. So for his concern with our problems, for his enthusiastic sharing of our joys and triumphs, for his loyalty, wisdom, and his integrity—for all these, we are privileged to dedicate this edition of THE AQUILA to our principal... MR. LANIER. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. Matthew 23:11 12
