The Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary schools was organized to improve educational conditions in the South and bring about closer relationships between schools and col¬ leges. During the early years, a large part of the energy of the association was given to accrediting. Slowly the purpose of school improvement has come to supersede accreditation that had brought order out of chaos in the development of secondary schools. Efforts of members of the commission on secondary schools now seem to be directed toward the development of standards and of accrediting procedures that will contribute to the continuous improvement of the schools. The chief function of accreditation should be the stimulation of improvement in the schools through varied means of which minimum standards is only one. The commission observes the following principles in its accreditation of schools. 1. A school should be evaluated in terms of its functions and purposes. 2. Both quantitative and qualitative criteria should be used in accrediting a school. 3. Standards should be used as a means of implementing the principles controlling t he school ' s functions, purposes, and improvements. 4. Standards and procedures for the accreditation of schools should be developed cooperatively by all concerned. 5. A school ' s effectiveness should be judged by the extent to which it meets the needs of the people served. 6. Standards of accrediting should be sufficiently comprehensive to stimulate each school toward the achievement of its pur¬ poses. 7. The accreditation of a school should be based upon its com¬ posite program and the facilities it requires. 8. The accreditation of a school should be based not only upon its status on a given date, but also upon the progress it makes between two dates. Plans were made at the opening of Surry Central High School in the fall of 1961 to meet accreditation requirements for both the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The faculty, students, and community organized into various groups and committees to study such areas as the testing program, curricu¬ lum, participation in extra-class activities, defining problems and doing something about them, community analysis and sur¬ veys on job opportunities and on how well the students were doing who went to college. After the local groups had held many meetings, surveys and discussions, a visiting committee of outstanding educators from the North Carolina State Department and from other parts of the state visited the school and made observations and recommen¬ dations in March of 1962. Many of these recommendations were carried out and improvements made, and then a final report was made to the State Committee in October of 1962. The school was notified about the first of November that it had been accredited by the State, and it was asked to have a delegate present at the convention of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges in Dallas, Texas, November 26-28. On November 27, 1962, Mr. Lanier was recognized at the con¬ vention as the representative for Surry Central, and the school was accepted by the Southern Association. The students, faculty, and community are very happy about this achievement, but all understand that the continuous im¬ provement of the school with the changing times in which we live is more important than accreditation itself. at Central 9
