Registration—Up betimes, and we did come to the school building to have our names recorded in order to obtain for ourselves admis¬ sion. Basketball Practice—We met among ourselves once more to practice the art of playing the game of bas¬ ketball. 2 Science—We betook our¬ selves with extreme studi- ousness to the study of alchemy and became lost in the conglomeration of its wonders. cycle mss I The End of the Day—On this afternoon, as on all others, the great coaches awaited our coming, and they ran very fine. The Lunchroom—The victuals were of extraor¬ dinarily marvelous quality and had about them a flavour of astonishing delicacy, and were also in great quantity ! La Classe de Francais—The students in a moment almost had the bulletin board covered and all in the French manner. 3 Week By Week Cheerleaders—The cheerleaders have faithfully given us their support in assembly and in all our endeavors. Elections—We gathered together to choose representatives from among us and, in that manner, to exercise our rights in a democracy. Sports—And, hence homeward, with the scars of the game upon our knees and elbow, but with joy in our hearts for a job well done. We won! 4 Activity Bus—And several we tried; but one did prove mighty easy (not here for us to describe, but the whole body of the coach lies upon one long spring), and we all, one after another, did ride in it, and it is very fine and likely to take. Our yeaR 8 The Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary schools was organized to improve educational conditions in the South and bring about closer relationships between schools and col¬ leges. During the early years, a large part of the energy of the association was given to accrediting. Slowly the purpose of school improvement has come to supersede accreditation that had brought order out of chaos in the development of secondary schools. Efforts of members of the commission on secondary schools now seem to be directed toward the development of standards and of accrediting procedures that will contribute to the continuous improvement of the schools. The chief function of accreditation should be the stimulation of improvement in the schools through varied means of which minimum standards is only one. The commission observes the following principles in its accreditation of schools. 1. A school should be evaluated in terms of its functions and purposes. 2. Both quantitative and qualitative criteria should be used in accrediting a school. 3. Standards should be used as a means of implementing the principles controlling t he school ' s functions, purposes, and improvements. 4. Standards and procedures for the accreditation of schools should be developed cooperatively by all concerned. 5. A school ' s effectiveness should be judged by the extent to which it meets the needs of the people served. 6. Standards of accrediting should be sufficiently comprehensive to stimulate each school toward the achievement of its pur¬ poses. 7. The accreditation of a school should be based upon its com¬ posite program and the facilities it requires. 8. The accreditation of a school should be based not only upon its status on a given date, but also upon the progress it makes between two dates. Plans were made at the opening of Surry Central High School in the fall of 1961 to meet accreditation requirements for both the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The faculty, students, and community organized into various groups and committees to study such areas as the testing program, curricu¬ lum, participation in extra-class activities, defining problems and doing something about them, community analysis and sur¬ veys on job opportunities and on how well the students were doing who went to college. After the local groups had held many meetings, surveys and discussions, a visiting committee of outstanding educators from the North Carolina State Department and from other parts of the state visited the school and made observations and recommen¬ dations in March of 1962. Many of these recommendations were carried out and improvements made, and then a final report was made to the State Committee in October of 1962. The school was notified about the first of November that it had been accredited by the State, and it was asked to have a delegate present at the convention of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges in Dallas, Texas, November 26-28. On November 27, 1962, Mr. Lanier was recognized at the con¬ vention as the representative for Surry Central, and the school was accepted by the Southern Association. The students, faculty, and community are very happy about this achievement, but all understand that the continuous im¬ provement of the school with the changing times in which we live is more important than accreditation itself. at Central 9 In niemoRnm out n e hi: hen- ' nr m .-no to: nrr re sx mr 1 22. 2S :-:_• . in: rnn :: £._ : : :m: r .-_ A :r__r. : £ r :rmi in_inn £ m-rat] £ £:i££ £ : ' -; he --- uj :r -t — . . i n es miro: v r, ' .:: :— v .21 ii pay Tsibate tc inn, bat Law m£_ m n iioiji :: r.ie nr hi: he hies: .nr n h_: r.c £: trnmir £i: re m neit n ec n ar h ccontlm ::__:re: £22: £ cnrnrraiht r iron: £ me rr hit ih_-:ino: £: m : 1: it £ . n-.n.rr. - ■.zi £22: it h.t £: ._ _ mmme :: CSmsi.ml ' in.. • v-.n ti - •. As Samuel Pepys, the diarist who lived in London in the late sixteen hundreds, might have phrased it—the condition of our group, neither more nor less than six-hundred twenty, is at present noteworthy, all of us being exceedingly eager to apply ourselves to learning and bearing a desire to miss no days and waste no seconds. To make this year an exception¬ ally commendable one—this is at present the desire, the hope, and expectation of all. Blessed be God , when, at the end of this year, we read the pages of this, our diary, and find that we have never been in so good plight as to our health of both body and mind, and blessed be those whose names are recorded in these pages. And, having worked with greatest diligence, may we be able to say in the month of June in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred sixty-three, that we have faithfully made record of all occasions. And, now do we take in our hands the necessary tools and set about the keeping of our Journal . 11 dedication We, the Annual Staff of 1963, wish to dedi¬ cate this edition of THE AQUILA to a man who has done much in starting our school on the road to a promising future. The supervision of the academic program is but one of his contributions. He keeps a firm eye on attendance, on discipline, registration, guid¬ ance, and on extra-curricular activities. Yet he is never too busy to help a student in the special way that distinguishes the man with a purpose from the man with just a job. So for his concern with our problems, for his enthusiastic sharing of our joys and triumphs, for his loyalty, wisdom, and his integrity—for all these, we are privileged to dedicate this edition of THE AQUILA to our principal... Allan Harrison, Dalford Pinnix, Jackie Fuchs, Curtis Simpson, Boot, Sock, and QavcL CLub INHERIT THE WIND Wade Tucker, Pat Teague, Franklin Freeman, Jim Callahan. The Dramatics Club of Surry Central presented as their 1962 production the famed Lawerence and Lee drama, I nherit the Wind . The play, billed as universal in scope, is based on the famous Scopes Trial of 1925, in which the advocates of science and religion clashed in the courtroom. After three months of work, worry, and wear, the dramatics group, the Boot, Sock, and Gavel Club, presented a realistic production—a production well-received by the people whose faith in themselves and in their convictions could stand a thought-provoking challenge. Cast in the leading roles were our present seniors Franklin Freeman, Pat Teague, and Donna Nixon; but the play could not have been built without the c olorf ul characters portrayed by Faye Baker, DeAnna Simmons, Jerry Dockery, and Smith Freeman. The Lord has blessed some of us with extraordinary talent. WITTIEST—Jay Coe and Nannie Coe. Wit is the spice that flavors life. SenioR SupeRlatives MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED—Pat Teague and Sammy Dollyhigh. By and by while pondering, they fell into a barrel of oysters and cheese; success is far removed! MOST DEPENDABLE-Eddie Patterson and Linda Bledsoe. We have among us two person¬ ages of most exceeding fine dependability. Upon them we can rely on all occasions. BEST SCHOOL SPIRIT—Harold Wilkins and DeAnna Simmons. Then he prayed and so fitted himself and re¬ ceived the blow in the best school spirit. BEST ALL-ROUND—Mary Ann Snow and Franklin Freeman. Before every great man there is a woman! 87 SenioR SupeRlAtives MOST COURTEOUS—Linda Holyfield and Johnny Simpson. And this is a most perfect example of a gentleman! MOST POPULAR—Geraldine Stanley and Kenneth Davis. Up and to the apothecary ' s to partake of a popular dish, nigh as popular as those who partake of it. MOST ATHLETIC —Rachel Martin and Bill Freeman. Previously we had used the old activity buses from Copeland and Dobson elementary schools. The entire student body agreed to work diligently for a new bus. The response from the students and patrons has been excellent, stated Mr. Lanier. At first I was a little doubtful, but with our students really working and with the publicity given to us by the newspapers, we have done exceptionally well. The AQUILA staff wishes to congratulate each person who participated in this project. This is the type of spirit that makes a really good school community. CONTRIBUTORS OF $50 OR MORE T. C.
