The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. ... Abraham Lincoln The strength of a nation lies in the wisdom of her youth, and the wisdom of her youth lies in her educational system. Realizing this and that the times arc, indeed, challenging and piled high with difficulty, our national and local leaden have labored unceasingly to improve our educational opportunities. And so... To the members of the Surry County Board of Education, for their role in enabling this county to attain her educational goals, to the members of our Local Board of Education, for their support and ' guidancc in helping to make Surry Central ' s first year a successful one, To the Superintendent of Surry County Schools, J. Sam C entry, for his capable leader¬ ship in Surry County ' s educational ventures, And, certainly to our principal, Mr. Lanier, who has worked so devotedly to see that this school renders a greater service in helping the students of this area gross- into fine young citizens, We wish to express our appreciation. There were endings mingled with fond memories and a tinge of sadness but also with great expectations as Copeland, Dobson, and Mountain Park High Schools ceased to be. However, a new educational day was dawning as Surry Central High School opened her doors. Some of us who faced the challenge of adjustment to life in a new school, now face the challenge of tire future in our highly complex and ever-changing world; while others will again have the responsibility and the privilege of studying and learning at Surry Central. It has been our purpose to present here, in this first AQUILA, the people, the activities, and the events that have made our first year at Surry Central a highly successful one. It is our hope that this book will serve as a vivid reminder of the year, during which strong educational foundations were laid at Surry Central. May you remember: This was the beginning.
