uila 1962 We Were Students of . . Copeland - mm Copeland High School was established in 1924 as a combination grammar and high school with eleven grades. For one year it operated with three high school grades, and then in the fall of 1925, it opened its doors as a four-year high school. The class of 1926 was its first graduating class. The year 1947 saw the graduation of her first twelve- year class. During its thirty-seven years as a high school, Copeland had only one principal, Arthur F. Graham. Around him was molded the school. At present Copeland is ' serving as a grammar school with grades 1 - 8 . Dobson - Dobson School was established in the 1870 ' s as an ele¬ mentary school, and during the 1880 ' s there was a freeschool held for three months of each year. A boarding school w ith about 150 pupils was operated by John Allen in the early 1900 ' s. The first high school graduating class was the class of 1912. The building housing the auditorium was built in 1927. In 1942 the high school building burned, and for a number of years, classes were held in the old county garage building. World War II held up construction of a new high school building, and the present structure was not completed until 1947. The third and final building, which includes a new cafeteria, was finished in 1955. 2 Mountain Park Institute was established as a private school in 1914 by C. W. Williams. The late Senator R. L. Haymore left the institution $130, 000, with which the present building and two dormitories were constructed. For one year it operated as a junior college, but a fire and financial difficulties forced the college to close its doors. The school became state property in the early twenties and was renamed Mountain Park High School. Mountain Park 3 But Now We are Classmates at Surry Central As its name implies, Surry Central High School is centrally located in Surry County, on a 48-acre site just south of Dobson, North Carolina, the county seat. Central offers to every one of its 595 students a well-balanced curriculum, consisting of 44 different courses. Each of the classrooms has modern facilities, which enable the teachers and students to do their best work in the fine tradition already established at Surry Central. 4 High School Our first year at Surry Central has swiftly flown by; but it has flown tirelessly, gaily, and proudly, like the Golden Eagle that has shared our growth and cheered our maturity. This year has given us a new sense of accomplishment, as we have made vast academic progress by utilizing Central ' s modem learning facilities. And we have also grown socially, as each new face in the halls became that of a familiar friend. For some of us, high school life has just ended; for others, it has just begun; but for all of us, life will forever hold gratifying memories of 1961-62 at Surry Central. 5 Many Hours Were SURRY CENTRA HIGH SCHOOL 196 ' BOARD OF CHMRMAN SUPERINTENDENT EDUCATK DN JOE A. Shakespeare Growing up is not an easy or a simple process; on the contrary, it is a highly complex process which requires continuous encourage¬ ment, inspiration, and guidance. And so to you. . . Who have given so generously of your¬ selves in order to help us find ourselves, Who have sympathized with us in our failures and rejoiced with us in our triumphs, Who have been the often unnoticed di¬ r ecting force behind our every success, Who have instilled in us, through your love and understanding, those qualities of Christian character, which are so necessary if we are to live abundant lives, Who have so patiently aided us in our efforts to reach our goals, We, the Yearbook Staff of 1962, re¬ spectfully dedicate this first edition of THE AQUILA. to you—OUR PARENTS—as an ex¬ pression of our love and gratitude. 8 The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. ... Abraham Lincoln The strength of a nation lies in the wisdom of her youth, and the wisdom of her youth lies in her educational system. Realizing this and that the times arc, indeed, challenging and piled high with difficulty, our national and local leaden have labored unceasingly to improve our educational opportunities. And so... To the members of the Surry County Board of Education, for their role in enabling this county to attain her educational goals, to the members of our Local Board of Education, for their support and ' guidancc in helping to make Surry Central ' s first year a successful one, To the Superintendent of Surry County Schools, J. Sam C entry, for his capable leader¬ ship in Surry County ' s educational ventures, And, certainly to our principal, Mr. Lanier, who has worked so devotedly to see that this school renders a greater service in helping the students of this area gross- into fine young citizens, We wish to express our appreciation. Because of them, xvc have truly begun to rise with the occasion. J. S. GENTRY Superintendent of Surry County Schools SURRY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD J. S. Gentry, Joe Folgcr, J. L. Cockerham, Joe A. There were endings mingled with fond memories and a tinge of sadness but also with great expectations as Copeland, Dobson, and Mountain Park High Schools ceased to be. However, a new educational day was dawning as Surry Central High School opened her doors. Some of us who faced the challenge of adjustment to life in a new school, now face the challenge of tire future in our highly complex and ever-changing world; while others will again have the responsibility and the privilege of studying and learning at Surry Central. It has been our purpose to present here, in this first AQUILA, the people, the activities, and the events that have made our first year at Surry Central a highly successful one. It is our hope that this book will serve as a vivid reminder of the year, during which strong educational foundations were laid at Surry Central. May you remember: This was the beginning. DELSIE P.
