BOOMERANG 1965 Surrattsville High School Clinton, Maryland Mr. Robert Vaughn This year the Senior Class proudly dedicates the 1965 Boomerang to a man who is himself dedicated. During his four years at Surrattsville as a gym teacher and coach, he has given our school a gift for which we can never repay him. As we have progressed through high school, this man has spent countless hours developing us mentally and physically. Our fitness has been multiplied many times through his skilled instruction. But his diligence and determination have rendered us an even greater dividend. In the past four seasons, our basketball team has become a primary participant in county and state competition, winning one state championship and three county titles. The admirable record which he has compiled in his brief years at Surrattsville can not only be seen in the glowing awards that his teams have earned, but in the daily inspiration that he has given us all. He has spurred us to higher peaks of excellence and instilled In us an even stronger sense of pride in our school. And so, we, the Class of ' 65, leave this yearbook as a perpetual monument of the affection, admira- tion, and appreciation we have for him. Mr. Vaughn, we dedicate our yearbook to you. The Class of 1965 F i ■■..■ f i %p c HHRmv I % « ■ g a wMWBu- Principal ' s John M. Pryde Principal 10 Message Dear Seniors — May I share with you one of my treasures that was given to me by my favorite professor, Dr. Lowell E. Noland. His thoughts express my true feeling about you. If I had known you less I would not grieve Seeing the year its course has nearly run. I would be glad our task is almost done, Glad for the bit of rest we shall receive. It would not trouble me to see you leave; And, walking through the halls and classrooms where We meet so often now, their emptiness Would not oppress me when you are not there. It would not matter much; I would not care; — If I had known you less. But I have watched your minds and hearts grow strong. Pitted against the problems of the hour; And I have felt a deep, upwelling power, As, like a mighty wave, you surge along Into the future, where your lives belong, — The radiant future, where your dreams will grow And flower and fruit upon some distant shore. To watch your progress there I may not go, But I rejoice in prospect even so, Knowing the promise you have shown before, Certain of its fulfillment more and more. Remember this is your Alma Mater, come to see us when you can and keep us informed of your activities. Sincerely, rffcfr ' yh-t- 2w £ Our Vice Mrs, Elizabeth Johnson Mrs. Johnson was born in the state of New Jersey. She played varsity athletics and was captain of her high school hockey team when it won the county championship. She attended Temple University where she received her B.S. and M.E.D. After graduating from Temple, she returned to her former high school to begin her teaching career. Her avocations have included directing a drum and bugle corps and a girl ' s camp in the Pocono Mountains, serving as a Lieutenant J.G. in the Navy, and playing on a professional club hockey team in New Jersey. Mrs. Johnson has been Surrattsville ' s administrative assistant for two years and vice- principal for three years. 12 Principals wmmm v f Mr John Gruber Mr. Gruber was born in the state of New Jersey. In high school, he participated in Varsity football, archery, and track. He was presi- dent of his class in his sophomore and junior year, and vice-president in his senior year. He attended Western Maryland College, participated in sports, and was Sports Editor for his college yearbook. Mr. Gruber ' s interests lie in conservation, mountain climbing, camping, and fishing. Besides being a member of the National Wildlife Federation and the Appalachian Trail Club, he is also P.T.A. president at Tanglewood Elementary School, and has been president of the County Teacher ' s Association. MISS YALE McFADDEN Miss McFadden was born in Lamar, Colorado. She attended a small elementary school named Las Animas until ninth grade. From there she advanced to Louisville High School. After graduation Miss McFadden attended Colorado State College of Ed- ucation where she received a B.A. in English. She then started to teach English in Milliken, Colorado. She then attended the University of Colorado and, afterward, taught and became principal at Erie Ele- mentary School in Colorado. Miss McFadden decided to further her education by attending the University of Maryland and George Washington University. Miss McFadden then came to Surrattsville and has been here for fifteen years. We have all profited by our association with her and hope that future classes will appreciate her help as much as we have. MRS. LILLIAN HOLLAND Mrs. Holland was born in Sheppton, Pennsylvania. She attended Sheppton Elementary there and grad- uated from Sheppton High School. Mrs. Holland attended Bloomsburg State Teachers College where she received her BS degree. She then received her MA attending George Washington University. Mrs. Holland came to Surrattsville in 1949 and has been with us ever since. We want to extend our thanks to Mrs. Holland for her help and guidance in the last three years. MR. JOSEPH A. From there he proceeded to Alice Deal Junior High School and then graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954. Mr. Shifflette attended the University of West Virginia, from which he graduated in 1961. His first teaching job was at Suitland Junior High School where he taught Core. He is at this time attending the Univer- sity of Maryland. Mr. Shifflette has only been at Surrattsville for a year, but we hope that he has liked it and will remain here for many years to come. MRS. MARGARET LOVELESS Mrs. Loveless, our school nurse, was born in Clinton, Missouri and lived there only until second grade. Her family then moved to Clinton, Maryland, where she attended grades three through twelve at Surrattsville Elementary and Surrattsville High School. Elected president of the Sophomore class and secretary of Latin Club, she was also active in Future Nurses and Thespians. As a freshman, Patty had served as secretary of Student Council and was a member of the Glee Club and the Na- tional Junior Honor Society. Patty is genuinely reflected in Ben Johnson ' s im- mortal words from The Noble Nature, In small proportions we just beauties see; And in short measures life may perfect be. CATHERINE LYNNE MERCER 1949-1964 Relatively new in the Washington Area, Kathy had just begun to participate in extracurricular ac- tivities. She was very active in the Andrews Air Force Base Chapel, and devoted to various school activities. Kathy was a member of French Club, the chorus, and the sophomore class float committee. Her freshman activities included intramural basket- ball, Glee Club, and the prom committee. Consolation for those who knew her may be found in the words of Longfellow, Nothing is or can be accidental with God. 21 Sophomore Class Officers v President Interim — John Long Secretary — Dianne Faulstich Treasurer — Sally Soderburg Michel Homeconi| eke Merry Chovan Terry Fowler Homecoming C, 9 9 S y ?£ f Dianne Rooney Judy Gordon Sharon Till Terry Dyes Margaret Jones Pat Spence Patricia Gann 127 Homecomin m s. . . ■ m- , WM • 13c i, ' ' • ' ; inni i m i i i i i l ii w M i nn i.i ,,.,- -w - : . , t(M V M 132 Sadie Hawkins Dance 133 -_■ rapt. Included in the sixty-man pageant team are Marines from the Barracks ' Guard Company and from the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. The pageant, developed for school and civic groups, is an elaboration of an earlier Freedoms Foundation Award-winning presentation by the Marines of the Sea School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. It was introduced to the Nation ' s Capital at Constitution Hall in April, 1963, where it received a standing ovation from over two thousand delegates to the 72d Continental Congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution. With hard daily training, our hvo-milers became the surprise team of Prince George ' s County. Midway through the season, they scored a stunning upset, handing High Point ' s cross country team its first county defeat in ten years. The Surrattsville harriers rounded out a successful season by finishing third in the Prince George ' s County Cross Country Meet. 152 MANUEL CORREA Fleet Five ED McMAHAN Cross country is based on a scoring system which awards points for order of finish (1 point for first, 2 for second, etc.), with the lowest score winning. Since the top five runners for each team are the only ones who figure in the scoring, it is they who carry the hopes and aspirations of our school. Led by co-captains Ed McMahan and Manuel Correa, Surratts- ville ' s fleet five were equal to the task. JOHN CLENDENIN PAT FAHEY HARRY SHISLER 153 IN MEMORIAM DONALD G. This year, the Hornets successfully defended their Prince George ' s County AA Championship and earned the right to return to the Maryland State Tournament at Cole Field House. Shocking the experts, the Hornets defeated highly favored Allegany, 68-62, and went on to topple also favored Parkville, 64-61, thus becoming the 1965 Maryland State AA Champions. Managers Three years ago, the wrestling team was merely an idea of the wrestling coach, Mr. William Smith. He called for volunteers, and he taught the fundamentals of wrestling to those who were interested. They had no real goal that first year, but their perseverance was worth the effort. Last year was the first year that the boys competed on the mats, and they did well. This year, the team has improved and gained much prestige throughout the county. In fact, the boys hosted the Prince George ' s County Wres- tling Tournament on February 26th and 27th of this year. Mr. Smith believes that continued participa- tion and support of the team by the student body will lead the boys to even more victories next year. Since the establishment of the National Honor Society in 1921, there is presently a total of 11,600 chapters in approved secondary schools in all 50 states, D.C., the possessions and American dependents ' schools in foreign countries. More than 300,000 students have received the highest honor that can be bestowed upon secondary school students. It is the purpose of the Society to promote scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service among the student body. The emblem of the National Honor Society is a lighted torch. The National Honor Society requested that the Choir sing at its Induction ceremony in November, and in December the Choir presented its annual cantata The New King, by Noble Cain. On Feb- ruary 26, the Choir gave a Song Assembly at which time prizes were awarded for their song contest. We are especially proud of the four members chosen for State Chorus and the twelve for County Chorus, but our cheers go to Margaret Gonzales, our choir president, who was auditioned and chosen to attend the Music Educator ' s National Conference. Special Credit to William Harry Merritt Harry Merritt, our school photographer, has proven to be invaluable in the creation of our yearbook. He has spent countless hours running through the halls in order to complete the pictures for various pages and has given up his spare time to photograph all our athletic events. He is responsible for the excellent photography of the Senior Superlatives and the divider pages, and has taken numerous candid shots. But his skill and competence are not only recognized by the school. He is presently employed by Lorstan Studios as an official photographer. And so, the yearbook class of 1965 would like to pay this special tribute to you, Harry, for your patience and cooperation. 247 Best Wishes for Continued Success to the Class of 1965 MARGARET ROLEY STUDIO 7533 San Juan Dr. Clinton, Md. 297-9607 FASHION SHOWS FASHION TEAS SELF IMPROVEMENT CLASSES and OVATION COSMETICS The Natural Look of Beauty Think Beautiful 24c Compliments of 7-11 STORES The Friendliest Store in Town The Fastest Service Around and So Very, Very Convenient OPEN 7 A.M. But the man who makes the entire book possible usually goes un- sung and unglorified. He is the framework, the one who brings all the parts successfully into the whole. He is Inspiration when no thoughts occur, Tranquillity in the midst of a screaming yearbook staff, Courage in the face of opposition, Devotion when things go wrong, and Energy at deadline time. He is the lovable guy who yells at us for being so slow, so lazy, and so noisy; the one, who with the sweet smile, hands out the rotten assign- ments. But most of all, he is a teacher who has confidence in our individual abilities and allows us to express ourselves.
