XVe are very fortunate at Surrattsville High School to have so dedicated a person to guide and direct our younger generation. In this world of today we need more people like her who are sincerely interested in the welfare of our future citizens. Miss McFadden is a truly dedicated person who gives unselfishly of herself, far beyond the call of duty for our school and the cause of education. Therefore it is entirely fitting that this book be dedicated to her. The following written by Folgerxlggsey expresses how we feel and we quo Nu for our friend and coun- selor,, en. sr THE BEST By FOLGER K1NsEY The best that we have is not what we've got But that which we give away- A gift to make easy another's lot- For it all comes back some day, The love that we showered to left and right, The boost that we gave some heart That wanted the dream and the song and the light As it struggled to get a start. We count our treasures in bank and chest, The things we have saved-they are there, But they do not matter, they're not the best- Our best are the things we share. Our best is the love that we give to those Who hunger and suffer and cry- A song of cheer, a flag or a rose, As the great procession goes by. Oh, we know the things we had were fine, And we gave them away with a will, Well, don't be worried, and don't repine, They are ours, we have them still. For the things we gave away are the things That profit us most in the end- A love and a thought and a cheer that rings Somewhere in the heart of a friend. Our heartfelt thanks are for our friend Miss Yale McFadden. 7 Surrattsville has grown and changed with remodeled classrooms, new students, and new teachers. Miss McFadden,s friendly smile and con- tinued guidance among all students have never changed. if Wiafv, m Q 2 H 3 'wth-'19Hh' 5 e E s i 3-Qi mf? gf K mg! pg -,Q -a -A -1 r 1H?A'f15j 'SWS iii K. ga-xfgihi .1 -452591597 ' 1 fg,l1f451f05f1,?f3ZF?'3V Lg: T gg 4g3g,,.gwL. In a year or two they will have the chance to audition for the senior band and possibly become a member. The junior band has participated in assemblies and other activities. They also play an important part at the Spring and Fall Concerts. SENIOR The senior band, now in its seventh year, has contributed a great deal to our school spirit and to the enjoyment of our school life. The band participates in various activi- ties throughout the year such as football games, pep rallies, and other assemblies. They compete annually in the National Guard Armory Band Contest and are going to take part in the All-Maryland Band Day at Maryland University and in the local Band Day at Oxon Hill this year. Annual Spring and Fall Concerts are also provided by this fine group. ii it ', r s so 2 y z BAND The band has won xarious honors in their sex en years ol' existence, highlighted by second place in their class two years ago and tiirst place in their class last year at the National Guard Armory contest, The last of 'the original members will graduate this year, so naturally they would like to win the contest again. Our deepest thanks and respect go to Mr. Mathena for the time and hard work he has put in to make our senior band the line group it is at the present time. W'e feel sure that the band will continue to represent our school very well under his able guiclance. , l B x BEGINNING BAND In the beginning band our seventh grades step off in the right direction with the aid and encouragement of Mr, Mathena. In a short time, with a little hard work, they will become members of the junior band. Their participation is little, but their enthusiasm is great. Their new uniforms were purchased with the much appreciated aid of Mr. Nary, principal, Mrs. McGrath, sponsor, Mr. Mathena, band sponsor, and Surrattsvilles student body. The year came to a climax for the majorettes as they beautifully and skillfully stole the show at the Cherry Blossom Parade and the Lions Club Band and Majorette Compe- tition at the D. C. Armory. Diane Taylor and Lindy Barry, ninth graders, were chosen as majorettes during the second semester, 78 The 1957-'58 majorettes were a high-stepping group of girlsinamely, Dottie Kinney, Nancy Baker, Phyllis Muenzer, and Jeanne Tisdale. They made their debut in the fall and from then on their unique and lively routines were added to innumerable Surrattsville programs. They performed at the football and basketball games and were noteworthy attractions at both the Fall and Spring Concerts. ln their first year of serving the school, the flag - twirlers, J u n e Shifflett, Mary Krell, and Dorothy Schumach- er, have been proudly supported by their fel- low students. They have worked along with the majorettes in perform- ing their skills and have- done much to show that they are worthy repre- sentatives of Surratts- ville. The A Cappella Choir began the year with their new robes, largely a gift of the Class of 1957. The Choir of 50 voices, also boasting an alternate list of ten, chose as officers: Judy Luslcey, presidentg Don Miller, vice presidentg and Joan Reasebeck, secretary-treasurerg Dorthy Smith and Carolyn Hedritk are librarians, and Bonnie Sellner .tctompnnies the group.
