CHAPLAIN CARLA S. CHERRY Chaplain Carla S. Cheny began her second tour on active duty in the Navy m January 1991. An ordained Baptist minister, she earned her Associate of Science from Faulk- ner State Junior College, Mobile, Alabama. She went on to eam her Bachelor of Arts degree from South Eastern College, Lake- land, Florida and Master of Divinity Degree with Marriage and Family Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Chaplain Cherry attended Navy Chaplain Candidate School at San Diego Naval Base, San Diego, Califomia. She attended Navy Chaplain's School at Naval Educational Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island. Prior to entering the Navy as a commissioned of- ficer and Chaplain she served a 2 year active duty enlistment and eight years in the inactive reserves. Deasaro Commanding Officer USS SURIBACHI 1 The keel of the USS SURIBACHI CAE 213 was laid in January 1955 at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Sparrows Point, Maryland. The ship was commissioned in November 1956 as the prototype of a new class of ammunition ship designed by the U.S. Navy. The ship's name is taken from Mount Suribachi, the extinct volcano over which the United States Marines raised the American Flag during the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. SURIBACItII's mission is to serve as a link between the production and storage of ammunition ashore and its use by combatant ships on the high seas. Since commissioning, SURIBACHI has operated in the Atlantic, Ca- ribbean, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean with the SECOND, SIXTH and SEVENTH fleets. SURIBACHI recently supported U.S. Naval Forces in Lebanon, Grenada and the North Arabian Sea. During the conflict in Vietnam, SURIBACHI operated in support of U.S. combat activities in Southeast Asia. She has an overall length of 512 feet, with a beam of 72 feet. Her maximum draft is 51 feet and fully loaded she displaces approximately 17,500 tons. Her single screw is driven by geared steam turbines, with steam supplied by two distillate fuel buming water tube boilers equipped with automatic combustion control. Her maximum speed is 20 knots, with a maximum sustained speed of 18.8 knots. There are 19 Officers, 21 Chief Petty Officers and 295 Enlisted. The USS SURIBACHI was also the first ammunition ship to answer the call of the nation, in support of Operation Desert Shield. OPERATIONS SPECIALIST MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER PAUL c. DOLAN 111, USN Master.Ch1ef Dolan was born in Rochester, New York on O9 October 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1972. After Recruit Training he reported to Radarman. A School at SERVICE SCHOOL COMMAND Great Lakes, III1I'1OlS graduating with the new rating of Operations Specialist. He first saw duty on board USS CLAUDE V. RICRETTS QDDG 55 reporting in November 1972. While in RICRETTS he deployed to the Mediterranean twice and eamed the Navy Commendation Medal for heroic achievement for his actions following the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY and USS BELKNAP collision in November 1975. He reported to CINCUSNAVEUR, London U.R. in May 1976 and served as a member of the command center watch team until May 1979. He then reported to the pre-commissioning crew of USS WADSWORTH at NAVAL TRAINING CENTER, SAN DIEGO in 1979 and was ship's company when WADSWORTH was commissioned in 1980, eaming his first PLANROWN- ER certification. He made his first deployment to the Westem Pacific while in WADSWORTH and reported to the FFG 7 FLEET INTRODUCTION TEAM, SAN PEDRO, CA upon retum in August 1982. In May 1985, he reported to PRE-COMMISSIONING UNIT RENTZ IFFG 461 and subsequently was a crew member when USS RENTZ was com- missioned in 1984. While in RENTZ he again deployed to the Westem Pacific where RENTZ was one of three U.S. Navy ships to make an historic port call on the PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. In November 1986 he detached to report to UNITED STATES SPACE COMMAND at Colorado Springs, CO. With USSPACECOM he served as leading NCO of the command center training department for this newly established Unified command, again eaming plankoumer status and subsequently assumed duties as the SUPERINTENDENT of the command center division. In February 1990, he reported to USS SURIBACHI IAE 215 as Command Master Chief. While on SURIBACHI he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea where he participated in OPERATION DESERT SHIELD. In addition to his Navy Commendation Medal, Master Chief Dolan also holds the Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal I4 awardsl, National Defense Medal and Southwest Asia Campaign Medal. He also wears the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Sea Service and Overseas Service Ribbons. He was designated Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist in 1980 and eamed his Associate Degree through the Navy Campus for Achievement in 1985.
