THE CAPTAIN Captain Ware was born in March 1915, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Ware of Hagerman, N. M, He attended high school in Twin Falls, Idaho, and preparatory school in Washington, D. C. , before enteringthe Naval Academy in 1933. He was commissioned as Ensign upon graduation with the class of '37, His first duty was aboard the U.S.S. LEXINGTON. From January 1939 until June 1940 he was a communications watch officer attached to the staff of ComAirBatFor. In July 1940 Captain Ware reported to Pensacola for flight training. Designated a Naval Aviator in November 1940, he reported to the U. S. S. WASP and VS-72 in February 1941, Followingthe sinking of the WASP, the Captain was assigned to NAS Daytona Beach as an opera- tional training instructor. He returned to the Pacific, however, to become Commanding Officer of VB-17 aboard the U. S.S. HORNET KCV-121 in May 1944. While flyingin the Pacific, he participated in the first landings on Guadalcanal, the first strikes on Japan, the Okinawa and Iwo Jima landings, and the sinking of the Japanese battleship YAMATO. Captain Ware's decorations include the Navy Cross with Star, the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Star, the Air Medal with Star and the Purple Heart. Atthe end ofWW II in August 1945 he was assigned to the staff of ComFa1r West Coast as Flag Secretary He became Group Commander of CVG-3 aboard this escort carrier MINDORO CCVE 1205 From the MINDORO, in 1948 he reported to the Naval War College at Newport R I where he re ma1nedunt1l1951 In June of that year he went to sea as Operations Officer aboard the attack carrier CORAL SEA QCVA 425 He reported to the Pentagon for a two year tour w1th the Fleet Operations Division This occurred in May 1953 Next he saw duty at Guantanamo Bay Cuba with the Fleet Training Group Captain Ware comes to SURIBACH1 from command at Saufley Field Pensacola, Flordia where student aviators are trained in the Primary Phase of Aviation and Basic carrier qualifications Married 1946 to the former Edythe Picht of Seattle Washington the Wares have one child a son named Thomas Hugh CAPTAIN WARE RELIEVED CAPTAIN JAMES GRAY AUGUST 23 1959 IN ST RAPI-IAEL FRANCE 9 9 . . .- Q l ' 9 a 0 0 - O -I. 0 I I O 5 ' . s 7 . .
