The Student Council Will some one make a motion that we adopt the constitution of the Student Council? remarked Martin Holmquist, one of its originators. 1 don't quite understand just what its purpose is. Could you explain it again? asked one of the girls. This Student Council was originated for the purpose of giving each person a voice in affairs concerning his welfare in school activities, Holmquist explained. lt will afford the pupil a better chance for self-government by creating such needed qualities as respon- sibility and self-control that are largely required in later life. A motion then was made and seconded that the constitution be accepted, so Central inaugurated its first type of student govemment. Under its officers, George Butler, President, Charles Smith, Vice-President, and Evelyn Braff, Secretary, the Student Council has more than proved its worth. I 'X -Q N 4 Boe' Calhoun, McCarthy, Murphy The junior Class Won't you buy a ticket to the movies from me? asked a junior of his friend. lt's an excel- lent picture and I know you'd enjoy it. How does it happen that you're selling tick- ets? countered the other. We sponsor the Iunior-Senior Prom, and this is the way we chose to earn money for it. We're anticipating a large crowd, too, for we've held dancing classes all year so that most of the juniors could learn. Did your class have many other social af- fairs? Yes, we had a mixer at the beginning of the yearg we had a Christmas party with Charles Goldberg acting as our Santa Clausg also, in the inter-class debates we won the Winifred Cedar Trophy. The Sophomore Class This is certainly lots of fun, said one soph- omore to another at their party. Do they hold one every year? I guess so, replied the other. I hope we have as good a time at other affairs as we've had here. And they did, for let's listen to a conversation among some juniors and seniors on the sopho- more Get Together Day. There goes a sophomore, a junior was ex- claiming. lsn't that clever, said another. They have their names pinned on them. Sometimes it's good to have them around-they sort of give us ideas. And the sophs continued to carry these ideas out. They went on a toboggan party and entered the Homecoming Parade as a body. They are also learning how to dance from Miss Chis- olm. These are some of the cries that might greet the ears of any- one passing the publications office after school. A glimpse would show students flinging papers about, scribbling furiously, and creating an unbelievable amount of uproar. How- ever, it's only members of the Devil's Pi getting it to press on time. Last minute accounts of basketball games dances and parties must be checked and maybe rewritten. Publishing their paper isn't the only task which confronts the energetic staff. When ten members were sent to the N.S.P.A. convention in Detroit, funds had to be raised to pay their way. So they sponsored a Wild West movie, gave a cabaret dance and sold candy at football and basketball games. Was the time at the convention well spent? Ask the teachers who every other Friday have to remind students to Put the Pi away and pay attention. Standing: Somerville, I. Smith, Beck, Cedar, Iohnson, Germond. Seated: Bramer, B. Smith, Hove, Williams, Bell, Conroy, Cohen. .. G' ,v---A O r' 3 Members ot the negative team hard at work reading material with which to build up their arguments. Seated: Zanuzoski, Clark, Nycum, Patterson, Pinkoski, Cedar, Smith, Bubley. Standing: Banks, Smith, Edwards. Debate One of the members of the debate team was talking to a prospect for next year. My, but we've had a keen season! Forty students entered debate and we've had a squad of winning teams. What trips did you go on? he asked. Well, we sent teams to Spooner and Cloquet. We had practice debates with Superior East and Cathedral. The Iunior speakers got the highest num- ber of points in our inter-class tournament so they'll have their names engraved on the Winilred Cedar trophy. We veterans gave up our trip to the Chippewa Falls tournament to pay for a chapter in the National Forensics League. But we weren't so unseltish, for gold keys are given, set with various jewels ac- cording to the number of points each debater earns. What is your most important debate? We consider the triangular debates with Denteld and Duluth Central the highlight of the season. Well, so long, see you next fall in debate. Not to be outdone the amrmative is working just as haro. Glee Clubs Say, Where did you get that gold pin you're wearing? is the question asked a member of the Boys' Glee club. That's the reward we got for winning first prize in the district tourna- ment, is the reply. 'lFirst prize! The Glee club must have been good. Did you win at the state contest, too?'?' Yes, We took first place, and the A'cappella choir won second division honors. When they were chosen to sing at a concert given by the Duluth Civic Symphony Orchestra, Director Lelvlay spoke very highly of their work. What did the Girls' Glee club do? They sang at concerts with the other members of the music department. We have a Girls' Triple Trio, and a Boys' Trio. They are training for a marching engagement as intensively as an athletic team trains for a game. And with excellent results, too, for they won the prize offered to the best looking unit in the Labor Day parade. Their marching appearance is equalled by their performances at concerts given in all parts of the city as well as at school. The band, fifty-seven strong, and clad in their colorful new uniforms furnished by the Music Mothers' club, makes an impressive sight. Those with the new basses and baritones should be able to bring out their parts more, for the horns are the finest that can be gotten. Now let's try the first six measures and land. With that Mr. Meier raises his baton, and orchestra rehearsal continues. But even the bell doesn't iinish the day's work, for section rehearsals are held after school every day. Being a member of the group is no easy task. Hours of practice are re- quired to master selections usually considered too difficult for high school stu- dents which are the kind presented at the concerts given by this organization. ELMER Left to right: Iohnson, Leszcynski, Auld, Adams, Ward, Essen, Gingras, Severson Dramatics I really enjoyed the plays put on this year by Mr. Taylor's dramatics classes, didn't you? I never laughed so hard in one evening as at those three comedies given early in the year. Remember how sorry you felt for Vivian Ward in 'Elmer', and how glad you were that Thomas Essen took her side? And remember how sympathetic you felt toward Harvey Backstrom and Shirley Krembs when a lover's quarrel separated them in 'The Wedding'? And how glad you were when Helen Turner decided to return the money she found in 'Finders Keepers'? It was well done, especially the parts taken by Nancy Nycum, Bill Standiield, and Thomas Nolan, Truly, I think we have reason to be proud of our dramatics department. Oh, yes, I enjoyed the senior class play, too. The name ? Why, don't you remember ? 'New Firesf Yes, by Charles Burdettf' lt was acted very nicely, don't you think? Directed Well, too. I also bet a lot of feminine hearts were fluttering when Harvey Backstrorn appeared as Dr. Gray, and remember the way the audience laughed at how Lorraine Krooks bossed Thomas Nolan, Alice, and Iohn'? Duluth tallied their only points against Central reserves in the final quarter. After seeing this game hopes ran high for an undefeated sect- son, but they were shattered when Green Bay downed the Vikings in a close battle on their home field. Duluth Denfeld, in the opening game at the Wade Bowl, proved rude guests, for after playing Central on even terms during the first three quarters, they scored twice in the final period to win. However, the Vikings came back strong to take Ashland into camp without any trouble. Buchanan McConnell Iohnsted ks Schneible Stearns Rehnstrand More of the Same With only one thought in mind, to avenge the defeat suffered last year at the hands of East, a determined Central squad took the field and put their small but scrappy opponents to route, com- pletely wiping out all inglorious memories. The Purple and White clad warriers' invasion of Duluth Central was disastrous, for the Vikings dropped a close game to the U Trojans. Playing on rr snow covered field, Superior's offensive tailed to click, and every Viking thrust was turned back. Climaxing a season of ups and downs, Central crushed Coler- erame. Scoring freely in the first quarter, the Centralites built up an early lead that was never threatened. The close of the season found Central with four wins, three defeats and no ties, and averaging nineteen points per to their opponents five. Hofstad Axft Iackson 4. Though they got a late start this year, the boys were able to schedule games with the college and with other sextets around the head of the lakes. Their greatest achieve- ment was a 14 to 5 victory over Webster high school, which later won the American Legion Class A Championship of Wisconsin. Central had begun too late to enter this tournament. Superior, with its long winter season, offers an exceptional opportunity for the sport, and the boys deserve a round of applause for organizing Central's first successful team. They feared that the loss of such stellars as Ftehnstrand, Engdahl, Frodesen, and Simstad would result in a lean year. However, they were set at rest by the performance of this yecir's team. In the opening game with Eau Claire, Coach Conley's crew proved they had the-ability to come back by defeating the Old Abes Z1 to 17, after being led for more than three-quar- ters ot the contest, The following week the Wausau Cardinals fell victim to the mighty men oi the north by the top-heavy score of 38 to 18. Superior cage devotees anticipated a dog fight in Central's next encounter with their inter-city rivals from the Old Town. But this game merely lengthened the Viking victory string, as they whipped the Orientals 32 to 19. The Central lads piled up a tremendous advantge in the first canto to coast for the remainder of the game. Central and East fans eagerly awaited the return game between these two traditional foes. Although fought more closely than the first, this encounter dem- onstrated how well the Centralites used their height, thus causing the Easterners to resort to long distance shots. Central secured an early lead and managed to keep ahead of the Orientals until the final gun sounded. ln this game Central accomplished what few Viking teams have been able to do, defeating East High twice in the regular season. This spurred the squad on to new heights, taking in their victory stride such well-known teams as Duluth Central, Park Falls, Ashland, Cloquet, Eau Claire, La Crosse, and Wausau. Among these, their closest encounters were with Ashland, whom they defeated 22 to 21 in the waning moments of the game, La Crosse, whose Red Raiders put up a terrific struggle before submitting by a 28 to 18 toll, and the Wausau Cardinals, who were not subdued until a moment before the last gun ended the game with the close score of 27 to 25, With this Central pulled down the curtain on one of the best regular cage seasons in the history of the school.
