Fun Livingf53 FEBRUARY 23,1979 I I I 1000 ttend CCSA Action Day Rall By SHELLEY RICHARDS An estimated 1000 students, faculty and administrators at the Action Day Rally on the Corey Union steps heard I0 college speakers point to the inequities in SUNY's and Cortland's Governors lixecutive Budget as evidence of the eroding of public education in New York State. l'm more troubled about this budget than any budget l'vc seen in the last IU years, stated Whitney Corey, vice president for Academic Affairs in his opening remarks. l'm increasingly troubled with the erosion of a great university. The Action Day Rally was organized by CCSA to accentuate the positive in articulating a wide base of support for the State University of New York, according to a CCSA publication. The publication went on, The State University was established with a goal to provide a high quality education and accessible education to insure the greater welfare of New York State. The present state budget, now being deliberatcd by the Legislature, fails to fulfill that goal, Cortland faces the loss of three faculty positions, among other things, in the proposed 1979-80 fiscal budget, bringing its total faculty line loss to 26 over the past six years. Enrollment at Cortland has remained steady in that time. SUNY faces an allotment of S52 million out of a requested S78 million, and a possible S100 tuition raise for its students. Given inflation, SUNY needs a subsidy of S52 million just to maintain existing programs, according to a CCSA fact sheet. The statc's priorities must be questioned, said Beth Van llanswlyk, student speaker at the rally and an active member of AWARE. Cortland's women's group, She pointed out that private universities in New York received S68 million in state aid through Bundy aid. William Rogers, professor of Political Science, and Cortland's representative to the University Senate, added the SIBIC has granted Syracuse University S15 million for construction of a domed Stadium, and that the head of the Department of Budget Cprcparers ofthe Governors Budgetj lloward Miller, is fasz. ' i ix ' .amd 4,-9 iii 1 siss .jfiifs X ti'-232' Q. Y gf af , 54 A' T Q! l' TJ an -K Q Q Q now on leave from Syracuse University. NormafCarr, chairperson of Women's Physical Education, speaking on l'The Future Effects of the Tuition-Budget Problem on the State University, stated, The culprit is the neglect of public education by the state. She pointed out New York is number one in the nation in state aid to private colleges, number 45 in increasing appropriations to public education, and number seven in the nation in tuition costs in public education. Bruce Atkins, professor of English, commented the state is corrupting the educational process by diminishing it. They are afraid to tell the truth. lle pointed out Cortland has maintained a 'viable 5300 Full Time Equivalent student credit hour load at the state's bidding, and then the state went ahead without anyone's knowledge but theirs, used a lfull Time Equatcd method of computing credit hour loads, and cut three faculty and l support position. According to the Feb. 16 issue of Tllli PRESS, the Full Time Equated measure was used by the state to justify cutting four staff positions. Cortland had no knowledge of this computation, reported Phillip Swarr, director of Institutional Research. At the rally, Corey also pointed out the mystery ofthe peer'l used in the state's Peer Institution study that led to the loss of 592,000 in base appropriations for the college. This loss and staff cuts were further magnified as Corey cited an increase in the average faculty student credit hour load from 275 in 1974 to 300 in 1979. Bruce Saffron, student senator, stressed forms of action students, faculty and administrators could take. Highlighting that action will be a trip to Albany by Cortland constituents Feb. 27 to meet face to face with state lcgisIators, Wc don't want a tuition increase, we don't want budget cuts, and wc won't take it, Saffron said to the cheerintt crowd. Goings Onf7l SPEAKERS E LIGHTE THE COMMU ITY H 72 Goings On Dr. Clifton Wharton, Jr. Cortland served as the host for a variety ofinteresting speakers during the year. Sir Harold Wilson, former Prime Minister of Great Britain, presented a talk on Euro-communism in Sept- ember. Actress Denise Nicholas of Room 222 fame was featured at the Educational Opportunity Program Dinner in October. In November, home run king Hank Aaron spoke to a capacity crowd in the function room, He advised everyone to know ourself believe in yourself and don't be afraid to fail? Y i . The last lecture of the Fall Semester was presented by Larry James in December. The former Olympic runner and gold meda- list said, It takes dedication and persistence to be what you want to be and you must believe in yourself. The talks ofthe Spring Semester began with the visit in Feb- ruary by S.U.N.Y. Chancellor Clifton Wharton, Jr. He warned that a tuition increase may become necessary if S.U.N.Y. does not get its full budget request. One of the highlights of the se- mester's programs was a iecture and slide presentation give by Dr. Wilson Bryan Key in March. In his enlightening talk entitled Subliminal Seduction, Key said advertisers spend millions of dollars incorporating images into ads to subconsciously affect consumer buying decisions. These speakers, along with others sponsored by departments and clubs, enlightened the college community with their ex periences and viewpoints. ZW R. , ' V, it s J. avi RQ? -, . Draped in lengthy black gowns with matching tassel- derbies, they sit impatiently silent, awaiting the begin- ning of the graduation ceremony. For most, graduating means leaving Cortland and all the fun and good times that goes with it. No more hang- ing out on the Union steps, playing frisbee in the quads, knocking people over to board the buses destined for little York Park, and no more pushing and shoving to enter the overcrowded downtown bars. Now forced to enter the real world, these newly set- free men and women will secure respectable positions fsome even in the filed they majored inj and will begin mingling with the working population, leaving all those wonderful Cortland memories behind. I have mixed emotions about graduating, explained one senior. UI won't miss the work, but I'll really miss my friends, he added in a sentimental tone. Skeptical, nervous, anxious and thankful are just some adjectives used to express some sentiments about gradu- ating. g'Wow, I can't believe it's over, seems to be the most common impression. 1- , 5 k -'V . . ., N ,Y-4 -. ,J , Oh my God, now I have to get a full-time job,', an- nounced one senior shockingly. When I was a freshman in college, I could never imagine graduating. It always seemed so far off. I can't believe I'm really donef' she concluded. After the completion of their college education, most graduates will be going back home to live, searching for a job and facing parental hassles and restrictions. But for others who are continuing on to graduate school to acquire their Master's degree, this is just another step- ping stone in their lives. They still have a few more years of freedom before they settle down and go back home. On Saturday, May 26 approximately S00 seniors par- ticipated in the graduation ceremony. Commencement began promptly at 1:30 p.m., during which time each student's name was called according to their major. Then came the surprising and unbelievable reality-that school was really over. 6 A J+- X nw. 1 -. x ' , n s f' ., wr VV TB -4 For You... Sdhneider ffReynolds Reynolds Hughes You Touched Our Lives You touched our lives in ways that you will never know . . . Too briefly, your laughing eyes and searching souls crossed our path and we shall never again be quite the same. You came to us with hope and laughter, and gave us p energy to spare. Your smiling faces and open hearts brought us happiness and a desire to be with you. We choose to think of you just that way, with smiles on your faces and laughter in your eyes. For this is how we'll always remember you. We cried for you today .... We smiled at times remembered. You will live on in our hearts and minds-our image of you will not fade. We only wish the laughter and hope you gave us will be returned to you somehow, some way. Life brings to all of us times to test our strengths. You gave us more than you could tell and we are richer for your gift. May your gentle spirits know that you will long live on within our hearts. ss sr 5- Rich Hughes P? .
