Sunset is an ideal place for teachers to teach and students to learng small classes, free and relaxed atmosphere, warm and friendly environment. lt is the practical application of idealistic principles that causes us problems. faculty xW l really enjoy participating in the extracurricular activities, especially the dramatic and choral produc- tions. It gives students the opportunity to not only sing, but dance and act as well in shows that are a step above your average high school production. Experiencing the works of the masters of choral music, Beethoven, Handel, and Hayden has greatly broadened my musical horizons. I thoroughly enjoy the spring concerts, the soloists, and being accompa- nied by professional musicians. The concept of coordination is good variety, diversity, etc. . .However this is not always easy to achieve and administer. comments from Student Body Coordination is a somewhat effective answer to the fcoed crazei' of recent years lt allows the option to students and parents of having our own traditions and attending a school that exists primarily for girls. faculty B, Q, W as bL6-.KQ-AVaA:Qi-- A - :ular duc- only ire a t 5 Y aY 7 'f Y 'T ,Q 'jj' 'gil MID-CONTINENT PUBLIC LIBRARY lllllllllllllIllIlllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllill 3 0000 12736652 8 Athletics at Sunset are an organized Way to express school spirit. There is nothing like a brisk, lively game of field hockey to finish off a day of hard study. SHS athletics provide an adequate means of letting off much pressurized steam at the end of a long day at school. Comments from the High School MZ ,gy MID-CONTINENT PUBLIC LIBRARY Genealogy 8- Local History Branch 317 W. You don't have to Wear uniforms. You can Wearjeans! The days seem shorter. It's fun because everybody knows everybody. comments from the middle and lower school WW ' w I would say of the faculty that they are a very sincere, dedicated group of people. 'They try harder. Sunset is potentially one of the most agreeable places to spend the day in Kansas City. . , k 1 , , , , f gf xxx-,,,,..N. i... The student-faculty cooperative govern- ment has fulfilled its responsibility, to a certain extent, in making Sunset an honora- ble environment to advance and learn. Rules and regulations have been made and many privileges have been passed by this govern- ment. All that is left now to complete a near perfect academic society is the cooperation of the whole student body. They are the ones Who make up the school and who can really benefit from it. There just has to be a certain amount of effort from each individ- ual, then the ideal conditions can actually exist. Comments from the student body EICCS W ff ulty i r t l 1 i E Q X ,,.,- Mr? , r 6 li- Students need to reflect on what they have here and be glad they have it. They should stop com- plaining and use to their advantage the suitable environment that is provided for them. Administration From PSAT's, SAT's and Achievements, to gradua- tion, she has guided and pulled us through some of our most trying high school experiences. Our mother away from home, she has kept us out ofthe halls and off the streets. Her quick wit, humor and under- standing have kept Sunset going. From ordering us to stop sunbathing on the lawn to giving comfort and advice, she was always there. We the senior class of 1974 wish to dedicate this yearbook to our MOA, Mrs. Atwood. 9 Q A-,MY A p. A - .- During the l973-74 school year the Helios underwent a total upheav- al of its past system and began the awesome task of creating a Hdiffer- ent image. With the guidance of Mr. Hayes Walker, the first semester staff attempted to divide and conquerf' by appointing a distinct job for each staff member to be responsible for. Under the editorship of Margot Patterson, the staff tried to make the paper one of more polishedjournal- ism, containing more universally sig- nificant articles which would hope- fully spark reaction from the often bovine student bodyf' Its achieve- ments were valuable and set up prec- edents for the incoming staff. ln January, the new staff was appointed with Susie Swartzman and Julie Crow as co-editors, and Laura Starr as managing editor. Under their supervision, the seven editors pro- duced more voluminous issues, and successfully strove to maintain a level of competency. The new staff insti- gated new columns, dealing with women in the community and helping the students to identify with MHTCILUS, Pam F1CiSChCf, Carol Bflftlelt Third Row: Becky Brimacombe, Sheila Kemper, Jennifer Ball, Mary Hoelzel, Ellen Caslavka, Jackie Sight, Marianne Carlson, Cindy Cowherd, Melody Walker Fourth Row: Jennifer Highley, Peggy Poindexter, Christie Wilkin, Catherine Front Row: Betsey Hughes, Susie Swartzman, Laura Starr, Julie Crow, Mary Beth Finkle, Lisa Mahurin, Margi Hall Second Row: Suzanne Slough, Isabel Thomson, Anne Duffy, Patty Ryan, Beth the Helios, role as the publication of a women's school. The business staff, headed by Melody Walker, proved quite effi- Beaham cient. At a nickel a word, Cindy Cowerd,s amusing Personals column extracted many reactions from its readers. With Denyse King at the camera, the pictures were comical, interesting, and occasionally controversial. Other visual aids included unusual and talented cartoons drawn by various members of the staff. Considering all the difficulties encountered, the new system of changing staffs mid-semester, worked out quite well. Both Staffs committed themselves with diligence, creativity, and determination, and, in retrospect, the Helios improved vastly in quality and public reaction this year. The Helios' long-standing goal is to make the paper a truly first-rate medium through Which faculty and students can freely communicate their ideas. 39 Yearbook Staff Eh ag? E? What a Year! A time of new experiences, of learning and understanding, of seeing and traveling and living. The camp was in the small village of Leek, where l lived and worked in squalor and joy, with 14 other students from other European countries. We dug ditches in the rain and constructed a cottage, jungle gym, teeter-totter, swing set, and a balance beam out of raw materials in order to create a glorious playground. After my work camp experience, I was sent to my AFS family, the Werreses, who welcomed me with open arms. My stay ended with lazy summer evenings of talking, lemonade, and much laughter Cmostly at mej. Part of me will always be with them. William Shakespeare 'GAS You Like Itn Facing Frito was a twelve-foot specter shrouded in red satin, shod in bejeweled riding boots, and mounted on an obese, pate-blue unicorn. Around him fluttered winged frogs, miniature Valkyries, and an airborne caduceus. The tall figure offered Frito a six-fingered hand which held a curiously inscribed identification bracelet simply crawling with mysteri- ous portents. Nl understandf' said the stranger solemnly, that you undertake questsf' Frito banged the door shut in the specteris surprised face, bolted, barred, and locked it, swallowing the key for good measure. Then he walked directly to his cozy fire and slumped in the chair. He began to muse upon the years of delicious boredom that lay ahead, Perhaps he would take up scrabble. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
