But, before we had the chance to continue our mischievous escapades, our sister class showed us that we were only amateurs. We never thought of riding mechanical horses with spaghetti in our pants or doing Chinese fire drills at 5:00 a.m. in the middle of Ward Parkway or kissing a dead, ten-pound trout! But we also initiated two new, young members of the high school into the good life . No one expected that we'd include the faculty in our extracurricular activities . As sophomores, we reversed our recalcitrant attitudes to enthusiasm and school spirit. Thirteen new kids brought diversity to our class. We participated in everything from hockey varsity to drama to newspaper and lit. mag. Pengy reflected our class spirit and his continual visits to Sunset soon caused a degree of antagonism among the upper classes. By the next year, our idealistic enthusiasm gave way to the realization of a world beyond those stone walls. While maintaining our interests at Sunset, we also became more involved in the community as a whole. Lisa and Chere left us a year early and we realized that college actually wasn't as far off as it had always seemed. Having pursued different paths throughout the summer, we returned with a greater ability to contribute as individuals to the entire class. How could we have ever made it through the traumas of a senior year without Dominique's enthusias- tic optimism? What would our weekends have been like without Bronwyn, the GRAND PICNIC-PLANNER? Even though we dreaded class meetings, we somehow managed to live through Senior Court, Revels, May Day, A.A. Luncheon, and finally, Graduation. The accompljshment of an Honor Day in October, a written Honor Code that was ratified by the Sunset Hill Community, a relaxed dress code, and the raising of about S500 for the Scholarship Drive added to the betterment of the community. However, the failure to establish a forum series, effectively enforce the Honor Code, or, in some cases, honestly represent and communicate the spirit of Sunset Hill, should not be over- looked. As in other years, there was a feeling among the faculty, administration, and stu- dents that through open discussion of an issue, probable solutions could be found. The ultimate example which this year yielded began on Honor Day . The majority of this day was devoted to small group discussion of the existing Honor Code and school atmos- phere in general. There was a good response from the day's program resulting in a modi- fied Honor Code and a more liberal dress code. But, the one forum held this year to evaluate independent study was met with very little enthusiasm. The credit or blame for this year's Co-op should not be directed at any person or group. I never know where to begin when people ask me about my A.F.S. summer in Thailand. The experience was so full and different and exciting, and so beyond any possible expectation. Waking up to roosters, doing wash on a stone slab next to a well, and buying corn ice cream from a street vendor seemed so natural, and yet so unreal at the same time. One of the most important aspects of my experience was my family. KUN PA was a policeman, authoritative at home as well, but his pride for his children was obvious, and his warmth and generosity constant. KUN MA was as full of life as anyone l've ever met. She had so much love, laughter, and mother-ness that it never really mattered that she couldn't speak English and that my Thai was limited. My oldest brother Worapon, attended college in Bangkok and was somewhat westernized. Wongwara, my young brother, was shy at first but I helped him with his English homework, went to his soccer games, and we soon become close. Jureerat, my little sister, was bright, full of fun, and constantly eating. Then there was Juta. She was always helping me with my Thai, translating, and gently correcting my comical and constant errors. We were, in every sense of the word, sisters. Peninsula. The town of Phuket was full of small shop-homes, street vendors, bicycles, TUK-TUKS, market smells, and people. I was the first AFS'er at my school, and wherever I went someone would call out Hallo Soo-san , or gather to talk, giggle, or touch my blond, curly hair. I'll never forget the blue and white uniforms and their warm, immediate smiles and friendships. My classes ranged from teaching English to Thai dance, art, sewing, and of course, Thai lessons. Thai is a tonal language, which means that just by usingthe wrong inflection I called my mother dog instead of Mom for two weeks! As most Thais, my family was Buddhist. And, as in everything they were tolerant and accepting, and allowed me to attend their ceremonies and participate in festivals and ritual.
