In English, the senior class is stating all their reasons for dedicating this yearbook to their favorite French teacher. lVladame Lutes first became acquainted with us in the sixth grade and for five years, she helped us struggle from our first Le Coffre au Tresor through La Litterature Expliquee. But not only did she help us in French, she was always willing to offer friendship and personal advice when needed. She was interested in us, ecstatic over our successes, despondent when we failed. Nlr. 1969 marked Louise Henderson's third year at Sunset Hill. lt proved to be a year of transition for both students and faculty. For the first time in Sunset's history, the privilege of Honor Study Hall was extended to all high school students. This gave Sunset students the opportunity to learn that their motto Freedom with Responsibility is more than an anachronistic Sunset cliche, it gave them the opportunity to learn that the older generation is more than willing to give them a chance to prove themselves as responsible individuals. Next year, the eighth grade will be incorporated into the high school and will be given an active voice in the new Student-Faculty Government which was voted to replace the conventional Student Council system in lVIay by students and faculty alike. ln the past, the Student Council had been criticized by students for being ineffective and the target of faculty hegemony. Under the new system, the governing body will be composed of 10 students and 6 faculty members elected, respectively, by their peers, who will discuss and decide on school policy for the high school. We, the editors and staff of this yearbook, hope Miss Henderson, faculty, and students alike will continue the present trend. The youth of today, students, Black Militants, hippies, Yippies-the disillusioned, want to participate, to love, to care, to give and accept the responsibilities that are theirs. lf Sunset continues its present trend under the leadership of Louise Henderson, and if it continues to offer the excellent educational opportunities it has succeeded in offering to date, it will not become an outmoded institution of education, but will, instead, continue to inspire happiness and creativity in those who are connected with it. l 7 f .W age. at 83+-ill t ,nfl Q 5? I Em 49 For one year before I came to Kansas City, I was dreaming, wishing, and hoping I would be accepted for AFS. l made up exactly how it would be, how I would act, and so on. I thought I knew-but it became so different. Living on the farm-with my own Camelot family, going to a school for girls, doing the musical, meeting with the other AFS kids, my relationship with my Swedish family, everything turned out in a way I could not have dreamed about. When I think of all the things I have gotten by being here, I get so happy and grateful. To be in another country for a whole year is an experience with yourself that you can never achieve in your own country. I think that I know myself much better now. And of course l know the USA or rather a part of it on a basis that has changed my outlook on Sweden, the USA, and also the rest of the world. AFS's motto is, Walk together, talk together all ye people of the world, first then and only then shall we have peace. And it describes so perfectly what AFS is all about. You come down to a personal people-to-people basis that you cannot get by reading books, newspapers, or watching TV. lf people could understand why other people act in certain ways, there would be no hate or fear and AFS is the best thing I can think of to make this come true. I am so lucky to be a part of it. And I want to thank you guys at Sunset for everything you have done for me that have made me realize how much I like you and have made me understand things I was blind to before I met you. This year will always be my source of happiness and I will always take it with me. SUMMER IN TRABZON, TURKEY ,fw , V A ' X W , f ' W X ,WWW ,W , 2 E12 U I I I Sixty Americans Abroad stepped off an airplane in Istanbul on July 2, 1968. We were so happy to be there that we waved our Turkish flags and sang the Turkish national anthem to the Turk-American Field Service delegation waiting for us! My whole summer, in remembering, seems just like that moment. Whether I was playing on the beach of the Black Sea with my twelve-year-old brother, Atila, or straining to understand what the smiling ladies were saying about me to my mother at the endless tea parties, or hurrying throughthe narrow streets in the rain with my sister, Sevgi, every minute of my two months in Trabzon seemed touched with newness and excitement. I remember vividly so many things. . .the sunsets, the Turkish bread, the beautiful hilly countryside with white minatets pointing gracefully upward. . .but most of all, l remember the people. The Turks are the warmest, friendliest people that I have ever met. Their way of life moves more slowly than ours, and they seem to enjoy it more, to my questions about anything from tomorrow's weather to whether my family could ever visit me in America, I was likely to receive the answer, lnsallah - lf God wills it. I always felt like a part of the Alptekrn family, although we had so many differences in language, religion, and culture, we did communicate so that we felt that there were no real differences between us. The key phrase, l think, is Hos geldiniz , Welcome , which the Turks say always when you enter their house, if the phrase could be translated into a general feeling of warmth, communication, and involvement, then my whole A.F.S. experience was permeated with that feeling. Francie Parker The world is so empty if one thinks only of the mountains, rivers, and cities, but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden. The Greek Experience, under the direction of lVlrs. Henry Scott, attended seminars to learn about the aspects of the Greek culture and heritage. A small group of Sunset and Pem- Day students left the Kansas City airport on lVlarch 22, 1969. After they returned to Kansas City, the students presented a play by Euripides entitled The Trojan Women. A collage of impressions-sights of the Acropolis, walks through the streets of Athens, a view of the Temple of Apollo, a trip, zigzagged, to Olympia, a dream of the first Glympic games at the Na- tional Sanctuaryp the lights of Delphi, talks with Greek teen- agers about politics-make up, for five Sunset girls, a total experience of Greece.
