Field Day Scene: the hockey field. Blazing hot sun. Fond Mamas watching for their darlings. Fathers in nickers and golf socks trying to e sp y b ' ort and calling each other Bill and Gus, A Mother: Oh! Here they come. Don't they look nice? What are they march- ing for? S.H.S.! Oh! How lovely. A Schoolgirl Un a whisperl: Whew! Hot! My legs are plumb giving out. Another Schoolgirl: Sh! You dummy! , All Schoolgirls: Wheel The formation breaks up. All scatter. A Mother: Well, look at those little children running. Aren't they just dar- ling? lsn't that the little Brown girl? Shouts. More dashes. Triumphant winners receiving medals. Sack races. A little girl iWith a medall: Look, Mamma! Lookie what l got. The high iumping goes on. A Mother: Look! There she goes. Oh! She missed it, didn't she? I didn't want her to go into it in the first place. You know l think the child has a weak heart. What happens now? Oh! The dedication of the new tennis courts. Rah! Rah! Rah! Hagerman. Rah! Rah! Rah! Hardenbergh. A Mother: Are you going to watch the tennis or the base ball? Mothers and daughters play tennis, and the fathers and daughters play base ball. If only those awful men don't beat the girls! My Susie felt awfully about it last year. A Schoolgirl lFrom the sidelinesl: Go on in. Go on! No! Stay there. Oh, dear, they would beat us.
