Ross Hill, Mrs. William T. Pat- ton, and Mrs. Justin Bowersock founded Sunset Hill School in 1913, they intended to establish a school which would be tree to put into practice progres- sive educational theory. With this purpose in mind, the school opened at Mrs. Hill's home in the fall of 1913. The next year it moved to 420 W. 57th Street, and in 1919 entered the present mainbuilding and lower school building. Sunset started as a grade school with .lulia Wood as its principal. In 1915, when Eleanor Field became principal, boys were admitted through the third grade, and French, folk-dancing, sewing, weaving, wood -and metal work, cooking, and na- ture study were added to the curriculum. ln 1917 Helen Ericson became principal llater headmistressl, and by 1919 classes were taught from nursery school through 12th grade, as they are now. The curriculum was also very similar to ours today, but French was begun in kindergarten. Miss Ericson was also responsible for many of our 5 Oth Anniversary Sunset Hill traditions, including Vespers, Revels, and May Day. May Day has changed considerably, however, for when Miss Ericson was here, May Day consisted mainly of a poetry contest. Mrs. Green came to Sunset in 1939, and since then the school has grown to its present large en- rollment and won an outstanding reputation as a college preparatory school. During her adminis- tration the first yearbook was published in 1954, and the Mellon Building, Holmes Building, and High School Building were added. Instead of reading statistics, however, one can probably best understand how Sunset has changed and grown by looking at one class, the class of 1927 ln 1927 the gym was dedicated, the school colors were green and white, Sunset beat Barstow in both hockey and basketball, College Boards were in June, and The Senior Gift was the por- trait of Helen Ericson, headmistress, which now hangs over the senior stairs. -6- nd xIyl CY 1Ce Bn- S 0 'mis- 54, and :on ged s of lool row nrds Jor- low . ,f, . UPPER SCHOCJL STUDENT COUNCIL Through its numerous proiects, the Student Council works toward its goal of making everyone a contributing, integral part in school activities. Each girl takes a definite part in absorbing huge quantities of food at the Student Council Picnic, Revels, and the Father-Daughter Dinner. She also helps in paper sales which provide the money to support war orphans and she sells tickets to the -92 fashion show to provide money for the A.F.S. stu- 9 dent. The entire school elects officers in the spring for the coming year. Each class has two represen- tatives, chosen each semester by her classmates. During the year the duties of the Council are to procter study halls, take roll call, and recom- mend girls for Honor Study Hall. Q 4 Q ff C 5 75 ,,, W, v f -,WN:,j7g.:ft W s E1 if 'K v t 1 5 N ! It has been full of fun, full of work, full of events, new people to meet, new situations to experience, all of which have made it the most enioyable and learning year of my life. I have enioyed these months because I have had so much wonderful togetherness with people here. Back in Norway I shall suffer from strong nostalgia recalling the good times I had in the Senior Room, on the Nichols' bus, at Winsteads, in Aspen, and on thousands of other occasions. I said I have had a learning experience as well as an enioyable one. I have been able to observe you Americans and your way of life, and I am taking many of your ideas home with me. I also have a fuller under- standing of the importance of the A. F. S. Slight differ- ences between two nations, groups, or individuals can be obstacles to forming friendships, but the A.F.S. proves by hundreds of examples each year that these obstacles can be overcome. I think the process of making new friends and feel- ing at home is easier in the United States than in any other country, thanks to the social inclination of you Americans and your readiness to communicate with others. I have found this characteristic your most striking one. Sunset Hill students, teachers, and Nichols, and everyone who has helped to form my year, Thank You. Y K THE SOCIAL SERVICE BCARD lhe function of the Sunset Hill Social Service Board is to guide those students interested in giving a share in helping people less fortunate than they. The board is composed of two representatives from each High School class. Under the leadership of Judy Tietze, president, and the guidance of Miss lda Wied, sponsor, the Social Service Board this year has shown inventive- ness and initiative in performing its iob. lts activi- ties have also been based on the traditions of for- mer years, such as on having each class adopt a Thanksgiving-and-Christmas family for which food, clothing and toys are collected, and on organizing fund-raising drives. For the United Funds S860 was raised, with lOO'Xs participating 'in High School. The students have seen the board active in cooky Sales as well as in performance of assemblies. ln the fall the board was represented at a High School Red Cross camp at Unity Farm. This year has been an active one for the So- cial Service Board. lt has helped to put the whole student body in contact with the thought of one's responsibility towards others. .. McMillan, the head of Sunset's Music Department. The Sunset Choir is made up of girls from the four high school classes who have better-than-average voices and who are sincerely interested in singing. This group participates in many school civic activities during the year. Choir sang on the Plaza during the Ad- vent season, and performed admirably at the Vespers pageant, keeping their composure in spite of falling scenery. Choir also participated in grad- uation at the close of the year. V . ,- . -., . . -, .,'.- - .Y .Af - ' . . . ... . -.--- -- - ' . ,-'- . ,- ' . -3441:-lgpgeda' I. -L ,lg JJ-K,-I .4,j -V A -, '. Holyoke Fire Laws of l87Ol lf a fire breaks out in the new building, the young lady who first discovers it may have per- mission to pour a pail of water on the fire, even if she is in a Supervised Study Hall. If it is not then extinguished, she may go at once to Miss Kaatz, who will give her permission to go to the Ad- ministrative office and inform Mrs. Green of the matter. Mrs. Green will then give her permis- sion to go to her home-room to contact her sponsor, who will send her to the bell-girl , Mrs. Eisenberger, who will cause a long bell to be rung. The young ladies will then assemble in the library, and Mrs. Green will rise and say, Good morning or Good afternoon, young ladies, as the case may be. We have ascertained that a fire has broken out on the premises and it will be necessary for you to do some benevolent work. All who are willing to assist will arise. Their names will then be taken in alphabetical order by Miss Strother. Then Mrs. Green will say, You may all arise. Those who have leaky pails may remain standing, while the rest may be seat- ed. Their names will be taken in alphabetical order, and then they may go to their home-rooms, take their pails, and carry them to the Alfred Tyler Hemingway Gymnasium, where Miss Miller will exchange them for whole ones. The bell will then ring again, and all will meet in the Li- brary. Each class, with its sponsor at its head, will then march to Loose Park Pond, fill their pails and return. To avoid confusion, no two young ladies must empty their pails on the fire at the same time. No one must leave her place until the one immediately preceding her has returned. lf it becomes evident that the building will burn down, a long bell will ring again, and the young ladies will meet in the Library. They will then be told to go to their rooms at the close of the exercise, put their rooms in order, being especially careful to dust the upper shelf in the closet, and to pick up all candy wrappers on the floor. Seniors are admonished to pay especial attention to this part of the exercise regarding the cleaning of the room. As the coca-cola bottles are refundable, Seniors must be especially careful to rescue them from the fire. Each girl will then stack her books and other belongings very neatly and place them in her locker. All purses must be removed from the building as the school will not be responsible for any loss of money. The seniors will then march promenade step out of the west door, and the iuniors, having received special permission from Miss Blair Nichols, Senior Fire Captain, to exit across the Senior Terrace, will side-step out the south door. Then as the young ladies will be scattered through the campus, a long bell will be rung through the streets, and they will all march to Jacob Loose Park, where Miss Wied will be found seated on the Civil War Monument, ready to excuse all excusable exceptions made during the fire. If it is ascertained that the fire broke out on the Senior Terrace, all responsible Seniors will thereupon remove their names from the Honor Study Hall List. N.B. There is to be absolutely no gum-chewing during the exercise. -141- Y .
