Sunset Hill School was founded in 1913 by Mrs. A. Ross Hill, Mrs. Justin D. Bowersock, Mrs. Wm. F. Patton, and a few of their friends who felt a strong desire for a school for their children more in keeping with new trends in education. Originally the school was located in Mrs. Hill's home but lack of space forced the school to move to its present location. The students and faculty fully appreciated the lovely seven acre campus and buildings, however, it was soon evident that even more classrooms were needed. Therefore in 1920 the first new building was added to the campus. This building was used as a dining room, auditorium, and additional class- rooms. As the years passed and the needs of the ever growing school increased, the number of buildings and the size of the campus also increased. In 1926 Mrs. Clarence Shepard gave the Alfred Tyler Hem- ingway Gymnasium and Mr. and Mrs. Hunters Gary gave the hockey field, naming it for their daughter, Mary Lamora Gary. A campaign to raise money for a middle school building was launched as the result of a generous donation by Mr. and Mrs. Jay V. Holmes, and in 1936 this building was completed. By 1950 the six- th building of the school had been added to the campus. This was the Mary Conover Mellon Build- 9- ,Q x, ing, given by Mr. Paul Mellon in memory of his wife Mary Conover, a graduate of Sunset Hill. In 1957 Mrs. Jay V. Holmes gave the beautiful new nursery school building in memory of her hus- band. Enrollment in the middle school had been steadily increasing and the curriculum had been broadened so that there was need for additional classrooms. In the fall of 1960 the junior high unit was added to the upper school. At that time the Sunset Hill Development Program had been organized. Through the interest and efforts of parents, alumnae, and friends of the school, funds were raised to pay for the junior high building and to add the beautiful academic build- ing for the high school. Contemporary in design, it has language and reading laboratories, a sound proof typing room, home rooms for the four grades - all the modern features which offer greater op- portunities for learning. f This is only a brief story of the growth of the campus of Sunset Hill School, but campus and buildings do not make an educational institution. Throughout the years the faculty, parents, stu- dents, alumnae, and those concerned with the main- tenance of the school have made Sunset Hill the fine school it is today.
