Ozlen Gurkan, whose home is in Adana, Tur- key, became a well-liked and enthusiastic member of the senior class. ln fact, no later than her second day in Kansas City, Ozzie joined her new classmates in the annual repainting of the Senior Room. lt was soon apparent that Ozlen's artistic talents were not limited to the covering of cement walls with swaths of paint a foot in width. ln the preparations for Revels, she painted on a window in the main building a fat and jolly Saint Nick. The programs she decorated for the Junior-Senior Prom were equallyuoutstanding. While maintaining excellent grades in all of her courses, Ozlen was able to join the operetta cast. She also participated in the Forum activity. Here she could contribute first- hand knowledge of the Middle East to the discussion of current events. Ozlen's over-all con- tribution to her adopted school was such that we all felt most fortunate to have had her and only wished she could be back at Sunset next year. Top, Left to Right: Seriously, l really like Sunset. These American boys are such a riot! She brought her own. Bottom, Left to Right: Yes, we'd rather be at New Haven, too. No, you can't take her home as a souvenir So-o-o . . . these are Americans! 'X 71 Z . Each spring its officers are elected by the entire school to serve for the following year. Twice a year, every class names one girl to represent it in the various activities and functions of the Council. The activities sponsored by the Student Council include Revels, the Father-Daughter Dinner, May Day, and the paper and grease sales. Money earned through these sales is sent as Sunset Hill's contribution to the support of two young war orphans. Other functions of the Council include the recom- mendation of girls to Honor Study Hall and the supervision of the dining room, roll call, lost-and-found, study halls, and new school projects. One such undertaking was the introduc- tion this year of Sunset Hill to the American Field Service. PfGSldeI'1'f .----......................... ......................... Athletic Association The Athletic Association, as the name suggests, is an im- portant board which organizes the athletic activities at Sunset Hill. Within the school it sets up the Bronze-Gold and class game schedules, Field Day, and the intramural tournaments in tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. The board also arranges the hockey and basketball play days with Barstow, and the varsity hockey game with John Burroughs. With the dues collected from every upper school student- there was a mammoth reduction of titty cents in this year's dues-the board buys athletic equipment and sponsors a number of social events. These include a dance each tall and spring, and the Athletic Association luncheon, which is held the day before graduation. It is on this occasion that both athletic and scholastic awards are presented to the girls who have earned them. President .-,,.4-..,..,,,, ........ Serwiae Beard The Social Service Board is composed of two members from each high school and eighth grade class, and a president elected by vote of the whole upper school. The purpose of the Board is to organize and carry out a number of social services for the benefit of needy people living in our own and other communities. ln doing so, the Social Service Board members become increasingly aware of the unfilled needs of these people and gain valuable experience in doing charitable and welfare work. They provide the student body with an op- portunity to do their part, by conducting the United Funds, March of Dimes, and Red Cross Junior Membership drives. The girls serving on the Board make tray favors and picture posters for the celebration of holidays in children's and vet- erans' hospitals, and hold a spring picnic for underprivileged children. At the end of the year, the Board members make or purchase items to help fill a Red Cross Chest of school supplies and other necessities, to be sent to poverty-stricken areas overseas. HOIR The purpose ot the choir is to give students who are interested in training their voices or in iust singing a chance to do so. One valuable aspect of participation in the choir is that it contributes to one's ability to sight-read o piece of music. The girls in this activity also gain more familiarity with the work of great composers. J Under the direction at Mrs. McMillan, the choir sang on several occasions. At Vespers, on December l4, it presented a program of Polish songs corresponding to the Polish play given by the junior class. During the Christmas holidays the Sunset l-lill choir took part in the caroling on the Plaza. On March l7 the group, plus several additional students, acted as the chorus for the Sunset l-lill-Pem-Day cperetta, Down in the Va ley. At graduation the choir sang a selection of music written by Bach, Purcell, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Virginia French Mackie, a noted Kansas City musician. 56 Left: Let s be friends! SSEMBLIES One period each week at Sunset Hill is devoted to the presentation of assembly programs by students, faculty, alumnae, and outside speakers. Under the able sponsorship of Miss Hampl, Mollie Allen, who sched- uled and introduced this year's programs, acted as the efficient and charming Chairman of Assemblies. A A varied and interesting group of assemblies both entertained and enlightened the student body and their teachers. The drama activity gave a delightful interpretation of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales. ln a more serious vein but equally as much fun was Bill Schaefer's description of his experiences as an American Field Service exchange student in Sweden. Six girls who had attended the National Conference of Christians and Jews related the results of their Saturday there. And so the year went, with reports on the Lake Forest and Red Cross conferences, the Book Fair, several interesting summer jobs, and even Women in Science. This last was given by a graduate of Sunset Hill and Smith, who is now working at the Midwest Research Institute. Various academic classes also contributed to the year's assemblies. The junior English class gave a reading of The Trojan Women, a senior American history section, Drinkwater's Lincoln. An informative assembly given by the General Science class showed great scientific potential in the freshman class. The presentations in French included an outstanding production of L'Homme Qui Epausa Une Femme Muette. Even the typing class took its turn with a novel musical typing assembly. An element of unity was given to the programs scheduled by the many delightful assemblies on summer trips interspersed throughout the year. A very well-traveled student body and faculty described and brought alive with colored slides the World Fair in Brussels, Rome and a papal audience, and several European countries. Our foreign exchange student, Ozlen Gurkan, told a most interested audience about her school and family life in Adana, Turkey. ' ,f efttg Trojan women . . . not a coeducational school. Dressed in white robes, the Upper School sings hymns and the junior class presents a religious play. Held on the Sunday before Christmas vacation, Vespers is always looked forward to and loved. This year, the program had a Polish theme, with the choir singing a num- ber of old Polish carols as the juniors presented a folk legend, The Christmas Nightingale. The play centered around a beautiful boy who wandered to a woodcutter's house one bleak night and was taken in by the family. When the children went to the city and presented their puppet show, it was dis- covered that the young stranger was the long-lost son of the queen. His mother was made happy again, and the woodcutter and his family were generously rewarded for their kindness. Excellent acting and singing made Vespers a memorable performance. One of the favorite traditions at Sunset Hill, this re-enactment of the old English celebration has been heralding Christmas vacation since l9l6. Margaret Weatherly was our jovial Master of Revels, leading the costumed assembly through songs and games. After the seventh graders dragged in the Yule log with little Peggy Marshall astride, Miss Bagenstos lMrs. Murtyi lit the fire with a brand from the year before. Margaret Ann Ennis and Emily Park then told us some Christmas stories. Songs and filling the Wassail Bowl in the main building were followed by the crowning in the gym of Louisa von Mayr- hauser and Susan Hancox, who presided as King and Queen of Revels over the judging of costumes and games. The seniors presented a stirring tableau of an old Christmas favorite, Eloise at Christmas Time, for the enjoyment of all. As we ate a wonderful Christmas feast, the sophomores, singing in Latin, carried in the boar's head-a traditional part of the celebration. After more gaiety and singing we wished each other a hearty Merry Christmas and went home full of merriment and good will. Left. The sensors present Eloise. Middle: Storytellers weaving tales. Student Council President Shori Coburn welcomed oll the guests, who then sot down to o delicious dinner served by the senior mothers. Toble decorotions were mode by eoch closs, bosed on the centrol theme of Volentine's Doy. Looking hopefully toword the future, the seniors rolled their nopkins like diplomos ond ploced dolls in groduotion dress down the center of their tcuble. The spice of the evening wos the senior fothers' memoroble interpretotion of Moy Doy. Mr. John Miller octed os norrotor for the vorious dcunces, in which fothers, complete with flowered skirts ond enchonting, long, rented hoir donced with unexpected groce. OPERETTA This year the Sunset l-li'l-Pem-Day operetta was Down in the Valley, written by Kurt Weill. lt was an original work for non-professionals and was unusual in its use of four outstanding American folk songs. The performance, which was in one act, was given in the Sunset l-lill gymnas- ium by a cast nearly twice the size of those in previous years. The staging was clone in a theatre-in-the-round, with the audience seated on the balconies and bleachers. The operetta was made more effective by the use of extremely simple scenery and by the spotlighting of vari- ous parts of the stage. lts highlights were a square clance ancl a prayer meeting in which the chorus sang a lively spiritual. d t h rs of Down in the Valley. Ma, Day May Day this year was a beautiful, colorful event, in spite of the threat of rain, At the open- ing of the program, Eleanor Kramer was crowned queen by Shari Coburn, the president of Student Council. Mollie Allen, Ozlen Gurkan, Julie I-Iorner, and Sharon Scott were her attendants. The early loth century festivals of Italy pro- vided the theme for the traditional Old English May Day. A highlight of the striking celebration was the parading of banners of Ie contrade lthe districts? of Siena, Italy, to the music of the Italian national anthem. lnterspersed among the folk dances performed by many classes were a number of original and entertaining novelty pieces. Pages, blackamoors, and Italian leading families paraded or danced in full regalia, and girls dressed as pawns, knights, castles, and royalty played a unique game of human chess. The flowered garlands and hoops of the juniors and seniors provided a background for one of the most impressive May Days ever seen at Sunset Hill. The team and a group of its loyal supporters trooped aboard the train, bound for St. Louis in a spirit of wild anticipation. Situated in the dome car and equipped with l,8OO marshmallow cookies provided by a generous benefactor, Mr. R. Hugh Uhlmann, we proceeded to consume our box dinners and disturb the peace of our fellow passengers. We arrived in St. Louis and set out for various destinations. The team spent the night with members of the John Burroughs hockey team, and the rest stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel. The next morning we assembled at the huge hockey field at Burroughs, and proceeded to lose, 5 to l. Carol Wilkin, the varsity captain, made our glorious, solitary point. Although we lost, the game was played with great enthusiasm, and we ate with gusto a marvelous luncheon provided by our hosts. J After Pem-Day had lost to Burroughs in football, it was indeed time to come' home. However, we boarded the train in a spirit of we'll show them next year, even though our ears were still ringing with the somewhat ironic strains of We love you, dear John Burroughs. k Left to Right: Marianne Wilson, Martha Litman, Elizabeth Haskell, Mollie Allen, Trudy Oliver, Carol Wilkin, Elizabeth Bruening, Jane Jochems, Virginia Greenlease, Carol Carmichael, Bonnie Murphy, Margaret Weatherly, Barbara Buhler, Laney Waters, Patricia Uhlmann. ., Ziff: :liz -TE M . .W-if H -1. ....., A H . Girls of the third through seventh grades participated in the choral singing and presentation of a series of tableaux. The stage was arranged in imitation of an oversized picture with a clear net stretched across it and a frame surrounding it. The still lite scenes began with the phophecy of the birth of Jesus and continued with the annunciation to the Virgin, Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, the annunciation' to the shepherds and the wise men, and the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. The various hymns sung by the girls and directed by Mrs. Graves highlighted the tableaux. Fear not - - - Madonna and Child Angels are supposed to appear from clouds, not windows.
