2 THE BALLAD OF THE ANTS AND THE GRASSHOPPERQ' BY AESOP By Jean Carey I Once there lived in a village green A grasshopper, happy and gayg And every day in the fields he was seen Laughing and singing away. He had no house, for the weather was fine And at night he slept under the moong Nor did he worry about the fact That it would be winter soon. x 4.59, . 5 , 3!l'T'1a f f iv 235- AG gl, 'E.3..m,gI gk ,sk y II Vfhile he would play his violin gay, Some wise little ants would pass, Carrying twigs and bread crumbs and figs To their newly-built house in the grass. They labored their way through the long summer days Preparing for snow and sleet, XVhile Elmer, the grasshopper, sang and played And patted his clumsy feet. III Now soon October rolled around And the leaves turned yellow and redg Snow began falling upon the ground And on top of Elmer's head. Weary and ill he staggered ong The snow fell more and more. IV The Queen of the ants stately opened the door, While the others looked eagerly ong Very slowly poor Elmer staggered in And the Queen went back to her throne. How Elmer welcomed the cheerful, warm fire On this dark and dreary night! XVith ice-water dripping from head to toe He was quite an amusing sight. He was forced to knock on the door. V When our six-legged friend had thawed out by the fire And had gratefully thanked the Queen, A million ants began to inquire Just why and where he had been. He shamefully told the things he had done When the weather was warm and brightg And timidly asked the Queen of the ants If he could spend just one night. VI Now take your Hddlef' she angrily saidg He reached for his hat in dismay. Her voice continued and sweetly said, Now take your fiddle-and play. Overjoyed our Elmer played The merriest tunes he could, And determined that on the next warm days He could-if he only would. When he sighted the house of the hard-working ants, MORAL: There,s a time for work and a time for play AESOP
