Sunset On September the twenty-first, nineteen hundred twenty-five, the doors of Sunset High School were opened for the first time. Oak Cliff had a new high school. This beautiful three-story structure, costing over five hundred thousand dollars, had room for two thousand or more pupils. Mr. J. A. Wilson, former football coach and history teacher at North Dallas High School, and captain of an American-owned ship during the World War, was the first principal. In the latter part of October of nineteen hundred twenty-Hve, sidewalks were laid to all doors, overcoming the handicap of mud. Sunset's first graduating class presented the school a sundial for the campus. By winning an essay contest, Helen Crews gave Sunset its first loving cup in December, nineteen hundred twenty-five. The Sfll771!Il'll!' was issued for the first time in November, nineteen hundred twenty-five, in magazine form. The first Bison football squad was coached by Mr. Harold Higgins. These players were called the Baby Buffs because of their size and inexperience. Although very active in her sport contests, winning the hrst track meet she ever entered, three city golf meets, district track meet, and four straight backetball crowns, Sunset waited until nineteen hundred twenty-Seven to take the city and district football championships. This successful team was coached by Mr. W. W. Bushman, who replaced Mr. Higgins in nineteen hundred twenty-six. In nineteen hundred thirty-one Mr. W. T. White, former superintendent of schools at Bonham, Texas, became principal of Sunset. Then in nineteen hundred thirty-three Sunset experienced an explosion which wrecked one wing, and which was fatal to Mr. Franklin, a janitor. But the school went on with classes in every possible place. The gymnasium, air shafts, auditorium, and even the halls held classes. In all, less than a week of work was lost. Sunset had the distinction in nineteen hundred thirty-three, of having one of the first school-wide speaking systems to be installed in the Southwest. On the walls of the upper floor corridor two beautiful murals were painted, which added color to the school. The Sta11zjJec1e, heretofore issued in magazine form, was changed in nineteen hundred thirty-one to a newspaper issued bi-weekly. In nineteen hundred thirty-five, because of the ineligibility of one of its players, Sunset became the unofhcial city champions in football. But they did win the nineteen hundred thirty-four and thirty-five baseball crowns. The scholastic rating of Sunset took a higher step in nineteen hundred thirty-six when Joy Corbin, and Ralph Abbott both won first place in interscholastic essay contests. Sunset is now eleven years old. For eleven years it has been a great factor in the building up of Oak Cliff. It has proved outstanding in scholastic as well as in sport records, and its student body has won for itself a reputation that not only Oak Cliff and Dallas respect, but that all Texas respects.
