Experienced and accomplished as he is, his success is assured. Although his perspective is different from ours, the scene is the same. May he find it a pleasant one, and may he soon come to have that attachment for Sunset which is peculiar to those connected in any way with it. We wish to express our gratitude for this first year of his splendid work in helping to make Sun- set an institution of high ideals of learning. We who are about to say Adios extend sincere wishes for many more years of happy association with Sunset, its students and faculty, to the new leader of Sunset's aspirants to success, Mr. W. T. White. THE SENIORS. , , l -1-W i To the Szmset Student Body: My association with you has been very pleasant for me. You have been courteous and kind, and have made me appreciate your real worth. I expect great things of you, both now and after gradua- tion, and always my hope will be for a better, a more worthwhile, a more lovable Sunset. Sincerely yours, Q Qflicers ol Sunset P. T. fix. SLOW Sunset High Parent-Teacher Association year book contains the names of three hun- dred and forty-three active members, fourteen associate members and ninety-five con- tributing firms. These memberships finance the organization, with the additions of some revenue from game tournaments, dances, and paid assemblies. More than ever before in the history of the association, welfare work has held pre-eminence over all other effort. Lunches, carfare, and other help have been provided for an average of twenty-five students each month at an estimated cost of S30.00. Visits are made to homes and extraordinary efforts made to meet the situation brought about by unemployment. A picnic was given the R. O, T. C. boys at Mineral Wells, and a banquet to the football team. Co-operating with the Dads, Club, the association is providing funds for pictures of some of the seniors appearing in the Sundial, also for sweaters for letter men on the football team. The Parent-Teacher Association entertained graduates of both classes and gave 55.00 to a student in each class attaining the highest scholastic standing. It secured an Art Exhibit in December and served tea to members and guests. A life membership was presented to Mrs. Durrett, dean of girls. It holds membership in Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Council of Parents and Teachers, and the State and National Congress. -as . MCBEE A more intimate knowledge of Sunset High School--its faculty, stu- dent body, and problems-on the part of the Dads of the Sunset High School district is the first aim of the Dads, Club this year. A closer co- operation between parents, school authorities, and the student body, and the encouragement of everything that will help build up the school spirit have been this organization's next objectives. Progress is judged by the service given to the students, the teachers, and the parents interested in Sunset High School. The Dads' Club has several definite projects, among which are an adequate cooling system for drinking water inside the school, and fountains outside the building. Additional shade trees and other conveniences were given consideration. The Sunset High School Dads' Club is steadily working for the better- ment of the school. + P '. ff, P ', v', A S-u....5 5 , 1 11 .aff ,LI Q9 XV1XR.NliR,PAUI.INE Ifflgffhl?11H1,Sl'lIiUl' C0nII.II'f0I' DURIxLI I', VIIQQINIII Dvazl H1zNSI,liH', PIIULIJL I.i!7V'dl'flI71 Hl'1LNlS, IJAPI LIIIII g WIN - IIAI ', KI. McManus, formerly Miss Bliss Stone, art instructor at Sunset High School, has been a helping factor and an inspiring in- fluence in the yearbook's annual creation. Winning the affec- tion and sincere regard of her pupils easily and quickly, she possessed the co-operation and eager willingness of the en- tire art department. Having known her consideration, her kindness, and her understanding enthusiasm, we feel that no matter what paths she chooses to follow, a good fortune and a kind fate will be her share. Now that she has left the portals of the school for other fields and another life, the students of Sunset High School wish her all the good fortune and happiness in the World. my glory is about to begin.. 333333513313 Class oi January, 'IQ33 Prriidrnf . This award is in the form of a biography of Dean Briggs, a notable American edu- cator, written by YV. R. Brown. For this year of 1931-32, the honor is conferred upon Thomas Cotner. The winners up to the present year have been Alvin Scall, Flisha Brannon, La Verne Rodman, Billy Speaker, Hirst Sutton, and Ben Maple. Candidates in each school are recommended by members of the faculty, and the final choice is left to the principal. The winner this year has more than filled all qualifications by his earnestness, his sin- cerity, and his co-operative enthusiasm. He is a student of which Sunset may rightly be proud and honored to call her own. Bbou seenfsl to be ingeneous, From left I0 rigbf: Tlx' Erstwhile Bloml amz' Lil Nell. Page Mr. Galilc. They require skill and much practice, but they call for admiration when perfected. Stunts create interest and thereby make of exercise an enjoyable diversion rather than an unpleasant duty. Every girl enjoys the thrill that comes from the real- ization of a task done well as she reaches the top of the ropes or completes the camel Walkv. The weak and fearful be- come encouraged as their efforts improve, and finally they are able to achieve that for which they have striven. Girls in all phy- sical education classes volunteered their services to aid in this noble cause of supplying funds for the disabled veterans of the World War. This is an annual sale sponsored by the American Legion through the Board of Education. All the high schools in the city take part. Sunset had the good fortune to receive both first and second individual prizes, Norma Greenwood receiving a dia- mond ring, and Martha Griflith, a diamond bar pin. The physical education department was given sixty-five dollars, as second prize for schools, to be used in securing apparatus for the gymnasium. Sunset is proud of this Hne showing on the part of the physical education department. S. M. U. play Day The S. M. U. Play Day is an event sponsored by the Southern Methodist Physical Education Department. All the city high schools are represented. The two girls having the best showing in the freshman, the sophomore, the junior, and the senior classes are selected to represent their class. Each girl signs up for her own activity. The S. M. U. Play Day is not purely competitive. It is merely a day of playing. There is no special award. The girls are given an outdoor dinner, and to complete the day everyone takes a swim. The spirit is very keen among the girls as to who will participate in the S. M. U. Play-Day. '+ .'4 Baseball There are two aims of baseball in Sunsetg namely, to be selected to participate in the S. M. U. Play Day and to receive a baseball letter. Not only interclass games are held but also games between schools. Baseball is popular because it has a real purpose and furnishes recreation in which large classes may take part. Indoor baseball is a favorite sport with the girls of Sunset. It is taken up in physical education 3. Each spring letters are awarded to the girls who achieve best results Indoor baseball originated from the tossing about of a boxing glove. The rules are similar to those of outdoor baseball and can be easily mastered. if fl e , P+ .4 is A +.4 A L Volley Ball Volley ball is a game complicated enough to be interesting but not so complicated as to require a great amount of skill before it can be enjoyed. One of the advantages of volley ball is that it may be played outdoors as Well as indoors and with a large group of girls as well as a small one. Volley ball can be played by girls of all ages. As in baseball, letters are awarded to those girls who show exceptional ability in play- ing the game. Inter-class games are held in the mornings be- fore school. The team Winning out in these games is declared the best in the school. Volley ball is undoubtedly one of the best group games that We have for girls. posture Contest Good posture not only helps to preserve the natural symmetry and pro- portions of the body, but also affords a healthful freedom of movement for the vital organs. It depends on normal growth and development of bones and on one's mental attitude. One must have the desire and will power. Correct posture applies not only to standing, but also to sitting and walk- ing. When standing, one must keep his chest up, shoulders back, chin drawn in, feet parallel with toes foreward, and arms at side, and stand tall. Proper sitting is to sit firmly and well back in the seat, body erect, and both feet flat on the floor. Correct walking posture is to walk with chest up, shoulders back, and chin drawn in, letting the heel touch the ground first. Toes are pointed forward so that the weight of the body will be evenly distributed over ball of foot. The posture contest was conducted by the physical education instruc- tors in each class. Every girl in Sunset had an opportunity to take part. Winners of each class met before school in the morning to appear before a faculty committee, which in turn decided upon the winners. Edith Phillips won first place. T7 X . 1, w F .Q N85 A ysxhxh ' X nw MAL N 'h ' 1 X sg NX f fl - kQp X K . --X 5 3 ,il 4 - x I x U ln.. .gl-x sh' .Q A ,, 4 - x, 4 if E .3 1 V -A ... Sunset is proud nf ht-r tt-anis and cf her coaches. Just a good scrimmagef, said a fan, in commenting on the Rockwall game. Sunset ran over Rockwall with ease. Never during the entire game did Sunset have to kick. The team flashed a good running and passing attack which was later slowed down by ineligihilities and injuries. POLYTECHNIC VS. SUNSET The Bisons fought hard to beat Polytechnic, but were just able to tie the score. A last-period drive by the Bisons was the feature of the game. Sunset Hnally lost 14 to 13, but credit is due the Bisons in this tilt. NORTH DALLAS VS. SUNSET Sunset, as she did last year, opened the city race against North Dallas. The team fought hard but could do nothing with the stubborn North Dallas field under a hot sun. Both teams were slowed down by the heat.
