The 25 participating Sunset students meet every Thursday night. This year the class is actively involved in the Mock Democratic Convention which was staged at the Memorial Coliseum. Mr. William Pressly is advisor of the Sunset contingent. Students from Sunset and other aroo high schools listen attentively to speaker 36 Metro Congross Great Decisions Again this year Sunset students have attended the Great Decisions series. This nine-week forum on world problems is held every Thursday night at the Reedville Presbyterian Church and attracts students from many high schools and colleges as well as interested adults. The program enables the participants to hear experts speak on topics of current interest. After the formal presentation, the students break up into groups to discuss in depth the ideas presented Young people and older members of the community therefore experience an interaction of ideas which helps to build a better bridge over the gap Tom Gaskill listens as Sunset teacher Tom Marsh explains issues stated in talk on Russia Margaret Frimoth and Matt Larson listen to group discussion of Russia at Great Decisions meeting Groat Decisions 37 Repertory Theater A new dimension in drama. The Repertory Theater, was presented at Sunset this year. Members of the third year drama class undertook the presentation of three plays of this style: Theater of the Soul Antigone. and Spoon River Anthology. The repertory technique involves the same 11 cast members taking parts in all productions. This means more intense work for the actors: they have to learn more lines and assume several different character personalities Characterization in the collection of poems by Edgar Lee Masters, called Spoon River Anthology was especially difficult for the third year students. ff-H 1 Marci Ridout enacting the part of A D Blood God. ask us not to record your wondersJ Cast of the Repertory Theater, below Standing, from left; Seated, from left; Brooks Parker Jeff Montgomery Cindy Lindahl Abi Phillips Eilene Richardson Terry Stratford Pamela Robinson Marci Ridout h 4 A A I vanished utterly. impartes 8rooks Parker 38 Repertory Theater Foreign Exchange Students Sunset students have had the opportunity to be exposed to many foreign students this year. They all showed great effort and spirit. The new varsity coach from Kelso. Washington. Pete Hopkins, felt that the 1971-72 football season was a year for laying down foundations for the future football program. Summarizing the season. Hopkins said. We had great improvement in many players as the season progressed. They stayed with it; there was no letting down. The student body is proud of the seniors who contributed their last year to football and he hopes to see the players with this year's experience return next year. The reason behind the success of the team was due largely to the philosophy on coaching. At Sunset, we never talk of winning; we talk of doing our best. And they did their best, rolling over other teams with increasing strength as they rose to their height. Winning goes hand-in-hand with the doing our best philosophy, as the team record shows. Wyttenberg's group approach to coaching also has a major impact on the performance of the team. He explains that seeing what works best for one person leads to better understanding between player and coach, which in turn leads to an improved rapport between the coach and the whole team. Basketball Sunset s 1971-72 junior varsity basketball team is made up mostly of juniors, with four sophomores rounding out the twelve member squad. The team has been described as being very cohesive and able to play well together, giving them good overall depth. The desire to win and their pride in a strong aggressive defense has made them a strong team, according to coach Joe Simon. Coach Simon feels that defense is a major concern in his coaching philosophy. He said that if the team can master this phase of basketball, then they can be successful in their game efforts. The junior varsity, varsity, and sophomore basketball teams at Sunset operate under the same program and are continually sharing in practice time and coaching skills. The team members also saw a marked improvement in their shooting during the 1971-72 season. Towards the end of the season they were making about fifty percent of their field shots, compared with thirty-three percent at the start of the season. This improvement was a result of the one-half hour a day shooting practice. The aggressiveness of the team improved with every game, and because of this, the tempo of the whole game picked up. The team's fast break, the transition between offense and defense, and their full court press greatly improved. Coach Broderick attributed much of this success to the desire and speed of the team members. Stove Pickering leads bombers to victory Left to right: S Chambers. J. Byers. W. Larson. B LaRue. The greatest obstacle the team had to overcome was lack of experience; there were only two returning shooters from last year's team. Coach Husen feels that this year's sophomores will give us high hope for the next two years. To have a good shooting score, rifle team members must have an honest desire to shoot well, learn the proper shooting positions, and practice. This council has created a much-needed transition to student government at Sunset. Very simply, through the efforts of all the students that volunteered their time to help the student body through Student Council, student government has become a more COMPLETE form of student representation. There is no way I can summarize what experience, friendship, and good fortune I received from the others associated with Student Council In retrospect, those in student government met the challenges that confronted them. This has made for their success as a council, and as individuals. I would like to thank the students, staff, and community members of Sunset that have been so willing to help me this year.
