APOLLO Co-Editors Advisor Jan Ansdell Miss Kathleen Shipp Carol Nelson Published by the Associated Student Body of Sunset High School, Beaverton, Oregon. ALMA MATER Our Alma Mater calls to us, Her voice we’ll ever hear; We live again those happy days, The times that we hold dear. Our hearts go back in memory Of our Joys, our Hopes, our Fears. And the tender thoughts of Friendships That remain throughout the years. Apollo rides His Chariot gold Across the flaming sky, Our hearts will sing remembering, Our days at Sunset High. 2 HPOLLDS The reflections of Apollo on this page and the following one are reflections of traditions of other years. This book also contains re- flections of Apollos, the students at Sunset High, as they follow old traditions and make new ones for future years. You will see them decorate for and enjoy traditional dances and cheer for winning teams. You will see them crown Kings and Queens and applaud someone’s job well done. You will see Sophomores try to raise money; Juniors order class jewelry and present a prom; and Seniors decorate a tree, enjoy a day of play, and graduate in the traditional purple and white. Some of these ideas are old, and some are new this year, new like the school flag to be carried on into the future. In all of these you find REFLECTIONS OF APOLLO. 3 Miss Kathleen Shipp—English teacher and annual advisor. This year's annual staff dedicates the '67 Apollo to Miss Kathleen Shipp. This is her third year of teaching and her first at Sunset. She is currently a sopho- more English teacher and advisor to the annual. In the last category she has been hardworking, eager to help and very under- standing. Miss Shipp is a graduate of Richland High School and Brigham Young Univer- sity. The harried annual advisor checks a page layout for a final deadline. Dedication A mechanical genius at work. A sigh of relief as the annual cupboard is locked for the day. Miss Shipp demands respect from annual co-editors Carol Nelson and Jan Ansdcll. As a sophomore English teacher, Miss Shipp listens to students' remarks. Council organized ten assemblies, planned Homecoming and raised $650 to help sponsor next year's AFS students. They succeeded in opening the snack bar until 5 p.m. and changed many after-game dance procedures as well as solving assorted other student problems. In short, fall council headed by student body president Fred Leeson, greatly benefitted Sunset and the students as well. The Senate, composed of 100 senators, once again discussed the controversial 2.0 GPA amendment. A new amendment was added to the previous proposals stating that the prospective officer must have maintained a 2.0 GPA for the past two semesters rather than for his entire school career. The rule for accumulative 2.0 GPA stayed, however, as there v as not a large enough percentage of votes to change it. Kim Kovak, president of the senate, along with Mr. Ackerman as advisor, tried to promote better communication between students and their government through the Senate. Student Council, along with the studentbody officers, planned and carried out Home- coming. Student Council And Senate Council And Student Body Officers Procrastinate 12 Controversial Joe Uris has a moment of rest from the week-long discussions. Right To Dissent Junior and senior history classes introduced some- thing new to Sunset's traditional teaching methods. For one week, speakers from all phases of life visited the history classes to discuss the average American citizen’s right to dissent. First speaker on the agenda was a Mormon leader, Mr. Payne, who spoke on the conflicts between church and state and the right of any person within a church to dissent against the ma- jority. A professor from Portland State College dis- cussed the right to dissent within schools. The third day of discussion, the controversial president of stu- dent government at Portland State College. Joe Uris, spoke on Viet Nam, sex, and school. Two Reed College students spoke on the fourth day, with the discussion running along the same lines. The fifth day, teachers from Sunset spoke, concluding the week. Mr. Greg Payne, Morman member, discusses the conflicts between church and state. John Moscow, student from Reed; a study in rebellion. 13 Girls’ League Chris Markman VICE PRESIDENT Felice Moskowitz RECORDING SECRETARY Linda Lindell CORRESPONDING SECRETARY Kathy Hines TREASURER Chris Seigfried HISTORIAN Girls’ League participated in and sponsored many activi- ties during the Fall. Commencement Feelings o( sadness and joy arc mingled with anticipation after stu- dents received their diplomas. 223 You finally made it, Don! Junior boys assist graduates from the stage. With the help of twenty hard working students, the 1967 school year has been recorded in pictures and copy. The book this year was done in a new way and by a completely new staff. They learned quickly how to deal with deadlines and photographers, how to write copy and order pictures, and finally how to make a pile of pictures look good together on a page. We, the co-editors of the '67 APOLLO, wish to thank each of these students for their time and effort. A special thanks goes to Alan Toman, our head photographer, who had to put up with the girls on the staff. Without him and his helpers our book would be nothing more than words and blank pages. Another thank you goes to our advisor, Miss Kathleen Shipp. She was a newcomer both to Sunset and yearbook production this year. She learned along with the rest of us, and as the spring deadline rolled around she was like an old pro. We have enjoyed the learning process this year and we hope we have produced something you can be as proud of as we are. The pictures in this book are the memories of a year to be looked at again a long time from now. They are the “Reflections of Apollo for 1967, and we give them to you.
