1 The old buses sit quietly at the barn, the drivers and maintenance crews victims of Prop. 13. 2 With lack of transportation, carpooling be- came a major means of getting to school. 3 In an effort to save Sl30,000, students had to spend afternoons with Key Driver Training instructors out on the road instead of with regular school teachers. 4 Amidst the personnel shuffles and seniority considerations, ludy Dutra became the new Nurse's Office secretary. 5 Students packed County Transit buses, crossing the city to get home. 6 Expensive equipment costs and fees kept many SHS freshmen out of the football program. Coupling small team size with big expenses, the Frosh Football team was cut in mid-season. 7 One of the few custodians left makes his early morning rounds. l 7, 5 rl .... mon ' 16 y ,

Backstage Cuts In june of 1978, the fed-up voters went to the polls and passed Proposition 13, cutting property taxes drastically. With 54.4 million of income gone, the FUHSD Board of Trustees cut over 70 employees, elimi- nated nearly all bus trans- portation, switched driver train- ing to a private firm, and dropped several sports teams. At SHS, the effect was huge. Classified employees nearly be- came extinct, as many secretar- ies and clerks were laid off. Program administrators, a new 77-78 idea, were cut and sent back to the schools. Custodians became few and far between, yet SHS kept the cleanest cam- pus in the district. With bus service for hun- dreds of students cut, alternate means had to be found. County Transit, carpooling, and ride- hitching were the favorite, be- sides just plain 2-to-3-mile walking in the cold.
