Pawn Napola About a year ago I was told that I was among those 500 QYouth for Understanding, exchange students from Finland who got to come to the United States for a year. Now l've been here in Sunnyvale for over six months, l've noticed how lucky I am. It's something really great to be here and learn something new every day. I re- member when I first got here everything was so different than home in Finland. Now I don't even realize that any more because I got used to those big differences pretty soon. I'm so happy that l've got to come to Sunnyvale High School. People here like everywhere else also are so nice and friendly. All my teachers are very helpful and I like them a lot. Especially at first when I needed some extra help with my classes I always got it either from the teachers or other students. I have participating in sports and it has been fun. That was one way for my- self to obtain friends. So I really have enjoyed my stay here and I feel that the time is going by too fast. Now I want to thank all of you for being so nice to me. This year has been a great experience for me. 102 Guest Performers Each year Sunnyvale host exchange students from different countries for a half or a whole year. Hannele Elo At first when I came here, everything was new and strange. I really was afraid of going to school here in the U.S. I felt so lonely and also outside from everything. The longer I stayed the more I enjoyed. Nobody laughs when I pronounce some word wrong and everyone is patient enough to listen to what I try to say. I think if I hadn't been involved in the Marching Band and sports, I couldn't have gotten many friends. Now I want to thank all the counselors who advised me to pick the right classes, the teachers who were so helpful when I had some troubles with my classes and all the S.H.S. stu- dents who were so friendly to me and made this year really great. I always will remember the best times that have happened to me here. I I Annika Nilsson In the beginning I was very hesitant about coming to the United States as an exchange student. At once when I arrived I felt home- sickness for my home. I was also scared be- cause I had no knowledge of the language and familiar faces to discuss my problems. Through my counselors and teachers I learned more about the language and met many friends..Now I feel like an American instead of a foreigner. Everyone has been so friendly and has really made my stay very exciting. When I return I'll take back many memories and valuable experi- ences. I enjoyed my year here at Sunnyvale and would like to thank everyone for the marvelous time I had.
