For 110 minutes, clubs dis- played activities, entertained questions, and boosted their memberships. Thes- pians played their part, showing brilliant colors and costumes, Pep Club raised spirits while Science Club bounced laser beams to the beat of the newly revived KSUN. Faculty members composed a committee headed by Commissioner of Clubs jimmy Lee to judge the presenta- tions. First place was captured by Thes- pians, followed closely by Pep Club and Science Club. The handful involved en- joyed themselves despite the overcast mood that prevailed at SHS. tu --- 1 .... f .S lfl If W. f l I 5 f 'M'h'w wgwbi , K , J J -LU W, www fncwcfo ,hub AM, i'L!Zf'i U2'L Ajwxxwdiaf Mw iid! Coupling small team size with big expenses, the Frosh Football team was cut in mid-season. 7 One of the few custodians left makes his early morning rounds. l 7, 5 rl .... mon ' 16 y , gk . Backstage Cuts In june of 1978, the fed-up voters went to the polls and passed Proposition 13, cutting property taxes drastically. With 54.4 million of income gone, the FUHSD Board of Trustees cut over 70 employees, elimi- nated nearly all bus trans- portation, switched driver train- ing to a private firm, and dropped several sports teams. At SHS, the effect was huge. Classified employees nearly be- came extinct, as many secretar- ies and clerks were laid off. Program administrators, a new 77-78 idea, were cut and sent back to the schools. Custodians became few and far between, yet SHS kept the cleanest cam- pus in the district. With bus service for hun- dreds of students cut, alternate means had to be found. County Transit, carpooling, and ride- hitching were the favorite, be- sides just plain 2-to-3-mile walking in the cold. After they rode past, waving to friends, last year's Queen, Lisa Kohn, escorted by Drum Major, Mike Zapanta, was present to give up her traditional cape and tiara. The night was a dream-come-true for some of the princesses. There were disappointments and joyful yells from the stands when jeanette Padilla was an- nounced as the new Queen. Despite the hectic diffi- culties in the planning of Homecoming, it came out all right on the night it counted. .-ff' 19 Changing Roles L 1 l iz sf 15 Y mm .l....l You and I was the theme of the Twirp Twirl. Many people were married in a little chapel, while couples danced to records played by disc jockey Rick Morin. Despite the lack of publicity, couples showed up in matching outfits and had a great time. 21 All the WorId's a Fair li! 1 Set at the turn of the century, Meet Me in St. Louis was about a middle-class family in a newly-developed metropolis. The story followed the family through sev- eral escapades aimed at getting their father's job back, the job they caused him to lose in the first place. Both students and faculty took part in bringing the excitement of the world's fair to life. The play was of higher quality than those of last year, due to the return of Mrs. Clarke to the Drama Department. ,il 24 O U Curtain Calls SQ ,VS HQ i I I W I 1 I Hs , . ., 1, 7 ' I . I V f! Though well planned, the Christmas Cotillion was not well attended. 3. Posters, streamers, and balloons served to raise student participation during 50's-60's week. 4. The lamboree, in the past a school highlight, has recently lost popularity among students. 5. Few seniors took part in traditions like painting the senior parking lot. 6. Few students voted in A.S.B. elections due to a lack of advance publicity. In recent years, rallies have decreased in popularity, while activities like 50's-60's week have increased in popularity. Other traditions, such as lamboree and ASB elec- tions continue to dwindle in importance as the apathetic attitude around our school grows and grows. The student body, being composed by more and more people with after school jobs and other non-school ac- tivities, has grown apart from the school. If the traditions and activities of our school are to continue, a change will have to be made in the students' attitude toward Sun- nyvale High School. G' Band Pit fl f- -Q ' .?N'?Uf'4 IMI! WMMMGMW The Christmas Cotillion was a Disappointment to the Sunnyvale Band, who sponsored it. The atten- dance was low due to other activities that were sched- uled that evening. No one danced until couples re- quested slower and more rhythmic music during lce- O-Matic's first break. Refreshed from their break, Ice- O-Matic changed their beat to Disco. Over-all the evening was exciting for all who attended. 1. One couple takes advantage of the refreshments, chilled champagne cider and cookies. 2. Queen Lorene Sena and escort wait impatiently for the music to play once more. 3. The three princesses lulie Haney, Tammy Fiala, Martha Smith and their es- corts. 4. Rosemarie Banuelos and date dance to the music of Ice-O-Matic. 8. Couples enjoy the chance to dance to the slower music. 9. Still too shy to dance everyone waits for a slower song. Scene Change 50's-60's week was made up of new and old activities. The usual pie eating contests, tricycles races, and root beer chug-a-lugs helped to wipe out the blues brought on by heavy rains. New activities included a week long class competition, which the seniors won. As in the past, the highlights of the week, the rally and dance, gained the most participation from students. s 3 Y , :J,,,f'iif?f - 'ff - ' - -' W fivw L' I ' 7 ' - rf i1ii1 L ' .nd .125 ' W5 ' , 2.5, ,.,, , f , A X A J mf K, . ..,. 'B5l'7n Extravaganza Hello Dolly proved to be one of the best plays put on in recent years. The large numbers of students working on the play and its three-day run, show how interest in our theatre has grown. However, the equality of the show is what made 'the production a success. The smooth scene changes, fine choreography, and a dancing carraige horse all worked well together. The play itself, follows the adventures of Miss Dolly Levi. Dolly usually matches up couples but is tired of this and wants to be part of a couple herself. She sets her sights on Horace Vandergelder, a cranky, chauvinist, rich, mercantile owner. After a series of esca- pades, she finally gets her man and they live happily ever after. Q lah 1 ,G The Sweetheart Dance, spon- sored by the Sophomore Class, was held to commemorate the spirit of Vaientine's Day. The dance was organized by the class officers as a fund raiser. ASB is actually the entire student body, however, popular participation has been a true problem at Sunnyvale. Few students ran for offices and the officers who were involved were working under strain due to lack of support. The Council began the year with hopes of uniting the students and reviving the lost school spirit. The immediate results were few but the future may prove to be better. Good Luck to the future officers. Fanfare Tm' w. av During the 1978 marching season, the Sunnyvale High School Marching Band entered eleven com- petitions and won a total of 29 awards. Some of the individual units did extraordinarily well. The Per- cussion Section was awarded two first place awards as was the rifle line. The Tall Flags came in first, third, and fourth in competition. Twirler, Gambi Kin- ton, won both a first and third place award. Though the small size of the band tended to hinder their achievements as a whole, the attitudes and self-dis- cipline created pride and confidence in the individ- uals. 1. CHESSXRECREATION In order to promote inter-school activity and promote the strategic game of chess, the CHESS CLUB teaches the game of chess and how to improve one's skill in this fascinating sit-down sport. As in previous years, the CHESS CLUB attempted to play in the district tournament. However, due to lack of interest, the CHESS CLUB dropped out of the tournament. Led by Suzy Snow, the REC CLUB was one of the busiest clubs on campus. During 50's week, they put on activities during both lunches and helped out with the rally and dance. The REC CLUB organized off school activities that many people took advantage of. They received group discounts for their activities and many people joined in the fun, spending less for exciting events. 'ff' l 2. 5 . ..,.,.. may i S , y li . , 1. ' .jp fv LE-8' S 'lx Pawn Napola About a year ago I was told that I was among those 500 QYouth for Understanding, exchange students from Finland who got to come to the United States for a year. Now l've been here in Sunnyvale for over six months, l've noticed how lucky I am. It's something really great to be here and learn something new every day. I re- member when I first got here everything was so different than home in Finland. Now I don't even realize that any more because I got used to those big differences pretty soon. I'm so happy that l've got to come to Sunnyvale High School. People here like everywhere else also are so nice and friendly. All my teachers are very helpful and I like them a lot. Especially at first when I needed some extra help with my classes I always got it either from the teachers or other students. I have participating in sports and it has been fun. That was one way for my- self to obtain friends. So I really have enjoyed my stay here and I feel that the time is going by too fast. Now I want to thank all of you for being so nice to me. This year has been a great experience for me. 102 Guest Performers Each year Sunnyvale host exchange students from different countries for a half or a whole year. This year we are lucky to have three stu- dents finishing their senior year at Sunnyvale High. We asked the three girls to give us their impressions on their stay. Z' I Hannele Elo At first when I came here, everything was new and strange. I really was afraid of going to school here in the U.S. I felt so lonely and also outside from everything. The longer I stayed the more I enjoyed. Nobody laughs when I pronounce some word wrong and everyone is patient enough to listen to what I try to say. I think if I hadn't been involved in the Marching Band and sports, I couldn't have gotten many friends. Now I want to thank all the counselors who advised me to pick the right classes, the teachers who were so helpful when I had some troubles with my classes and all the S.H.S. stu- dents who were so friendly to me and made this year really great. I always will remember the best times that have happened to me here. I I Annika Nilsson In the beginning I was very hesitant about coming to the United States as an exchange student. At once when I arrived I felt home- sickness for my home. I was also scared be- cause I had no knowledge of the language and familiar faces to discuss my problems. Through my counselors and teachers I learned more about the language and met many friends..Now I feel like an American instead of a foreigner. Everyone has been so friendly and has really made my stay very exciting. When I return I'll take back many memories and valuable experi- ences. I enjoyed my year here at Sunnyvale and would like to thank everyone for the marvelous time I had. luniors 9 'ev I A lunior Class Officers: Tom Wong tPres.l I L A' i l s A , Q Inez Azcona tSec.j, Rose Chan tTrea- 'Q' 104 Agbayani, Sandy Agustin, lean Alfaro, Amelia Alfred, Michelle Alvarez, Anita Alvarez, Michael Amador, Norma Anderson, james Anderson, Stephen Angel, Marsha Anson, David Apostol, Mildred Aragon, Larry Arjona, Cary Atangan, Florendo Austin, Claire Avila, Alba Azcona, Inez Baisley, Kim Balga, Robert Baltar, Pedro Baltimore, Wendell Banuelos, Bertha Barbuscia, Annette Barcelos, Angie Barcelos, lohn Barclay, Alex Basa, Robert Bastemeyer, Sherri Bautista, Resmenia Bayless, Ken Baza, Liz Beardslee, Roger Beigh, Tony Bernard, Ronald Berg, Teresa Biala, lulie Bondurant, Brian Borgstahl, Shelley Borlaug, Berlin Bowles, Donna Boynton, Tracy Brown, George Bucago, Lilybeth Bulatao, Luella Caballes, Richard Cabana, Melecio Cabaniss, Sheree Cabral, Leila Cadruvi, Steve C A 'K f,,: si , T , . 5 be - ' ' fl 'K Y' t , , .s rv iff 4 .., A .1 WJ! a' l rw ' 'Y X P Q -'H qi i t lr W 1 I k ,. ,- x is ,Ji fps ' ,' Q , . , , t 'Vw A0 I My if , . 1 f 1 ,A . wr we 5 - v i , N ' l ' ' 15, WA-C at Q1 il M' ,I ,Q 4 fr. My 3 S Q A 1 Ns .fm .R vp wsu Ev Palvl Napola About a year ago I was told that I was among those 500 fYouth for Understandingj exchange students from Finland who got to come to the United States for a year. Now I've been here in Sunnyvale for over six months, I've noticed how lucky I am. It's something really great to be here and learn something new every day. I re- member when I first got here everything was so different than home in Finland. Now I don't even realize that any more because I got used to those big differences pretty soon. I'm so happy that I've got to come to Sunnyvale High School. Now. I want to thank all of you for being so nice to me. This year has been a great experience for me. 102 Guest Performers Each year Sunnyvale host exchange students from different countries for a half or a whole year. This year we are lucky to have three stu- dents finishing their senior year at Sunnyvale High. We asked the' three girls to give us their impressions on their stay. I think if I hadn't been involved in the Marching Band and sports, I couIdn't have gotten many friends. Through my counselors and teachers I learned more about the language and met many friends. Now I feel like an American instead of a foreigner. Everyone has been so friendly and has really made my stay very exciting. When I return I'II take back many memories and valuable experi- ences. I enjoyed my year here at Sunnyvale and would like to thank everyone for the marvelous time I had. l. ,, luniors junior Class Officers: Tom Wong QPres.J Inez Azcona tSec.j, Rose Chan tTrea- surerl 104 Agbayani, Sandy Agustin, lean Alfaro, Amelia Alfred, Michelle Alvarez, Anita Alvarez, Michael Amador, Norma Anderson, james Anderson, Stephen Angel, Marsha Anson, David Apostol, Mildred Aragon, Larry Arjona, Gary Atangan, Florendo Austin, Claire Avila, Alba Azcona, Inez Baisley, Kim Balga, Robert Baltar, Pedro Baltimore, Wendell Banuelos, Bertha Barbuscia, Annette Barcelos, Angie Barcelos, John Barclay, Alex Basa, Robert Bastemeyer, Sherri Bautista, Resrnenia Bayless, Ken Baza, Liz Beardslee, Roger Beigh, Tony Bernard, Ronald Berg, Teresa Biala, julie Bondurant, Brian Borgstahl, Shelley Boraug, Berlin Bowles, Donna Boynton, Tracy Brown, George Bucago, Lilybeth Bulatao, Luella Caballes, Richard Cabana, Melecio Cabaniss, Sheree Cabral, Leila Cadruvi, Steve v, at - K, oi 5- - f '. i - ,' W, J I ff' '. The work was demanding but the end results are rewarding. Being on the staff has been a very valuable experi- ence for everyone. One sees so many different fac- ets of the school and the people in it.
