MR. STEVE VARICH retires after thirty-two years as a teacher, over half of that time at Sunnyvale High School. Students may be surprised to learn that he is a Hlocal boyn and product of our own district, graduating from Fremont High School in l932. After completing teaching requirements at San Jose State College, Mr. Varich was a science teacher in San Francisco for a year and then for thirteen more a teacher of mathematics, science, history, occupations, and physical education at Chowchilla High School. He developed champion- ship basketball teams. there and coached that sport when he returned to Sunnyvale to teach in I955. At our school Mr. Varich was almost exclu- sively a social studies teacher but did have some science classes at the beginning. Over the years he is and has been known mainly by seniors, always dedicated, gentle in his ways, and gener- ous with his time. Many of his strong points include loyalty to the school, the district, and especially to his students. He was never known to shirk responsibilities. Of all those who have or who will retire shortly, Mr. Varich is most deserving of the peace and rest that he will enjoy. We hope and wish this for him. Su Q t l 1 1 . . if li A

The year i973 marks the end of Sunnyvale High School's l8th year. The school, like are graduating class, has undergone profound devel- opment since its opening. The graduating class of l973 has experienced more curricular devel- opment, facility additions, and administrative reorganization than any previous graduating class in our I8-year history. This should not be alarming but rather taken as a sign of the times. Knowledge is doubling every ten years, and education can no longer be viewed as a static process. In the future our responsibility as produ- ctive citizens will be to adapt to changing ec- onomic, social, and political conditions on a world-wide basis. We can no longer think in of a specific, vocationl goal but must contin- ually equip ourselves with basic academic skills, attitudes, social values, and civic responsibilities to meet future chalenges. The graduates are to be congratulated in carrying on the rich traditions of Sunnyvale High School. You excelled in scholarship and athletics, and have provided leadership in student government, and the student activity program. Our sincerest wishes for a productive and full life go the the Class of l973. Walter W. Hale Principal L
