Thomson, F. Garcia, S, Avila F. Fisher B. Beardon J. Cruze. ROW 3: N. Donaldson J. Williams J Fred Lindsey head coach of varsity football was in his third year at the helm of the Jets. Lindseys assistants, Wiley Cousins and Jim Cruze were both new teachers to Sunnyvale High. Mr, Cousins was line coach and Mr. Cruze was the backfield coach. The Varsitys starting offensive line was composed completely of two and three year lettermen. The line which totaled i222 pounds of beef thrust averaged-175 pounds per man. The Jets met Mountain View at Deisner Field on Octobert 18 and throughout the game displayed a dazzling running attack that to- taled 232 net yards. ln the game against Santa Clara the Jets strong point on offense was their running game which racked up l44 yards for the night. The Jets finished the football season oft with a bong, when they Welton R. Rice, R. Juanez, C. Belveal T. Corpus R. Beardon F. Lindsey. ROW 4: D. Lynch, G, Hewitt D. Dalke B. Gerbo G. Wing, L. Huggins, E. Reno, W. Beck. romped over the Los Altos Knights on November 22. The Jets cle- fensive unit, aided by the sparkling play of tackle Dick Dalke guard Nick Daleo, and halfback Fernie Garcia played their best game of the 57 season. Los Altos threatened to score throughout the game but was stopped on four occasions inside the Jet 20. The varsity football team playing its first year of SCVAL competition had a record of 2 won and 6 lost. Only two of these games were de- cided before the final gun, and the others could have been won with a touchdown or an extra point. Led by such veterans as John Dutra and Fernie Garcia in the bockfield and Dick Dalke who made the all SCVAL first defensive team Chuck Belveal Nick Dalea and Ramon Flores in the line the Jets had an over-all successful season. 96
