Each year has been an important part in this cycle. When Sunnyvale was in its infancy and first opened its doors to the students, a wing, shops, gymnasium, cafeteria, band room, and the administrative building stood in solemn tribute to a job well done by the educators, the architects, the engineers, and the crafts- men. Here stood a well-constructed building, having no more significance when not oc- cupied than a reservoir void of water. Confusion reigned supreme that first day. To be truthful, everyone, the faculty and stu- dents alike, were lust a bit scared and apprehensive about the future. 3 Administration 9 ,,,..,.A-'Ar' Students and faculty faced the problems and began to settle down to formulate schedules and adminis- trative plans for their school, Clubs were established and commissioners were elected along with a stu- dent council. The faculty was getting acquainted with tho students and establishing a nucleus of un- derstanding and unity. A student court was put into working order to enforce the laws enumerated in the newly drafted constitution. For the hrst time Sunnyvale was more than an inanimate structure of steel glass and yellow doors The new campus was now a year old and tangible construction was over for the time being Efforts had switched from constructing oblects of steel and glass to building tradition and achieving cultural maturity Yes, the second year was to see many traditions es- tablished at Sunnyvale. From the opening day at school, clubs, organizations, athletic teams, and stu- dent governing boards were established by the students who accepted the challenge ot the pioneers ot '56 The backbone ot any school's activity program is the interest shown by the taculty. With the taculty's help and guidance, tradition began to torm. There were well-attended and successful plays, dances, and games, all contributing to a scene ot industrious students and a growing school. Rallies were staged to give the athletic teams the big send-otts which they so richly deserved. School spirit was the pro- duct produced by all this tun, tervar, and activity. Sunnyvale no longer appeared as a school born only three short .years before. Instead, the eftervescent, contagious spirit of Sunnyvale was accepted as having ex- isted for years and years. The cycle is now complete. Three years have passed since Sunnyvale first opened her doors to admit the student body. The traditions have been established, the reputations have been recognized, and the shrubs, flowers, and lawns have replaced the original landscape, weeds. In another week school will cease for the third time here at Sunnyvale. A structure of steel, glass, and yellow doors will be hushed for the summer months, but in Septem- ber, as the leaves fall, the cycle will start anew. l Words cannot express fhe great feeling of loss that fell upon Sunnyvale Hugh School on July 9 l957 To us Naom Blunt was not only a Teacher but she was a real fr end to everyone We will never forget her warm smule or her playful kidding All who knew her loved her and shall ever have a warm place ln 'rhelr hea Ts for her memory l R, ev- f fa I Cs , Wl,:fl'li5fl'6lfl'o 5G32 ,-arf. PCL i D N This year we have attained our maiority, we are graduating our first Senior Class from Sunnyvale High School. In three short years we have grown from a rugged beginning in a new school with all its shortcomings to a smoothly operating four year high school, which has taken its deserved place in our community. Visitors have come from all over the state to see our physical plant, our buildings, and our grounds. Without exception they have given us the welcome compliment of paying tribute to our courtesy, our spirit, our respect for our school, and our pride in its maintenance. It is interesting to note that very few of our original faculty have left us. The twenty-one charter membership has grown to fifty-five teachers. The student body count of tive hundred in T955 has grown to a present enrollment of thirteen hundred. Student parti- cipation in sports and clubs and membership in social and intellectual organizations has been gratifying in its rate of growth. Our Seniors going on to college can feel in every way ready for fair competition. Those who remain as members of our community can feel they are alumni, iustly proud of their Alma Mater. With our maturity we have added responsibilities. Our graduates will honor our school with their achievements, setting goals for their successors, reminding parents, teachers, and students that enduring traditions are not easily built or lightly used. Sunnyvale's Columbia Blue and White Standard is and will be a symbol of integrity. Marty Mathiesen The class of '58 shall always be close to me. Our ex- periences in pioneering the senior year were re- warding in this very first year at Sunnyvale High School. Now a new challenge is before you, wherein you may write a book of a glorious future, regardless of the path you take in life. lf you are honest with your- self and have a real desire to give more than you receive, you will some day in the sunset of life re- view the pages and be unashamed. To the student body I would say, This has been a very successful and rewarding year, this our first as a four year high school. This has been made possi- ble by a wonderful staff, eager students, and ade- quate facilities. To the seniors who have given us much of our tradi- tion, l would charge, To have a purpose in life, and having it, throw into your work such strength of mind and muscle as have been given you. We have had a great year, all of us - rallies, foot- ball and basketball games, class assemblies, the many successful dances, and brunch time with those tempting doughnuts hurriedly eaten as the third period bell rings. Yes, it has been a great year, and I shall always re- member it, But most important of all is that you will never forget it, you the first graduating class of Sunnyvale High School. Richard K. We were off to a good start in our freshman year with quite a few pupils. We were very happy to finally be a part of Sunnyvale High School and were determined to be the best class in school. Our first thoughts were to make a good impression upon the teachers, but that didn't last long! To help us get through our first year, we elected Johnny Sotelo, president, Joe Torres, vice-president, Todd Peterson, secretary, Kathy Cooney, treasurer, Emily Jackson and Barry Kinney, social managers, and Gerald Amaral and Judy WolFf, sergeants-at-arms. We joined clubs, struggled through classes, and tried to do the right things expected of a Freshman Class. Some of our members made basketball, base- ball, football, track, and wrestling teams. Many girls made the drill team and went out for maioretting and GAA. Our freshman year was much fun, but we looked forward to our sophomore year with excitement. To start our second year at Sunnyvale, we elected the following officers, president, Barry Kinney, vice-president, Geraldine Munoz, secretary, Carmen Fernandes, treasurer, Judy Wolff, Jeanette Webb, social manager, and Joe Lomeli, sergeant-at-arms. Jeanette Webb, Nancy Sims, and Carmen Mays were elected song-girls from our class. Our energetic class participated in everything. Our brains made Honor Roll and CSF. Our athletes made important splashes in the world of sports, and the girls ioined GAA, glee club, maiorett- ing, flag twirlers, drill teams, and also did very well in band. Our first Christmas Ball, Snow Fantasy, went oFf very well with our own Jeanette Webb making a very lovely queen. Our assembly, according to us and some others, was one of the best. Transfer students from everywhere helped to bring our class roll well above the 200 mark. We all managed to get through our classes without too much trouble and looked forward to the day when we could say, We're juniors. And we finally made it! To start off our year, our 287 students elected Sam Avila, president, Jerry Nieto, vice- president, Janet Michelsen, secretary, Judy Wolff, treasurer, and Nancy Sims, social man- ager. Our assembly was the best yet. And our prom, the first Sunnyvale High prom, was one we shall remember for a long time. Thanks to our advisors, students, and all our class spirit, we've come along with a great class that is getting greater. When we graduate, we can look back with pride upon all we've accomplished during our four years at wonderful Sunnyvale High. ROW 1: P. Danforth, J. Michelsen, L. Woodard, S. Hyrie, A, Vela, C. Rice. Richards Championship Basketball Team Sunnyvale High Schools C team continued traditional winning ways with their second consecutive SCVAL championship, their first undefeated season, and extended their winning streak to 30 wins. At the beginning of the season things looked dark for the Jets, with only one man left from last year's squad. As the season progressed, however, the Jets molded into a team of which any school would be proud. The closest any team could get to the Jets was 35 to 34 by Menlo Atherton. Len Nix lead in scoring with a lO.4 point per game average. John Ulate was second with a 8.3 average. Offensively the Jets scored an average of 49.5 per game, while holding their oppo- nents to 26.8 points per game. The only loss under coach Tony Nunes came in the first game of the l956 season, lt was at the hands of Menlo Atherton, who beat them 45 to 38. Since then the Jets have won 30 straight, including two wins over that same Menlo Atherton team. This year the team seems to be even stronger than last year's squad, as was evident by the scores of the Ayer and Fremont games. The Jets won 52-l3 over Ayer and 68-3l over the crosstown rivals, the Fremont Indians. Nix, up from last year's D squad, and Ulate, a returnee from Nunes' championship team in '56, stand sixth and ninth in league scoring respectively. Along with Nix and Ulate in the first unit, there was John Richards, Lenny Zucchi, Clark Rosa, Stan Guit- terez, Bill Meyers, and Rich Crawford. Jim Collins was the team manager. 104 R, Renteria, J. The record indicates a successful season, al- though both losses were sullered in league competition and re- sulted ir' a seccrd place finish. Next year cs these bays move up to the C team there is pramase of another outstanding club to continue their 31 game win string. 5 34 Wrestlin ROW I: H. Cabezas, J. Hidalgo, L. Amaro, T. Alarcon, A. Emery Reno and Leo Amaro SCVAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONS The Jet grapplers won eight dual meets and last two during the year, climaxing the season by winning two of the twelve individual championships in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Tournament. Outstanding individuals were Emery Reno and Leo Amaro, who won the l65 and lO3 pound league championships respectively. Emery was a repeat winner, as he was last years l54 pound league cham- pion. Coach Frank Waxham did not anticipate a successful season, but due to the hard work of the wrestlers and their good spirit the team was successful in winning a maiority of its dual meets. Next year the team will have more experienced men from which to draw, with champion Leo Amaro, third place finisher Todd Peterson, and fourth place finisher Barry Kinney back to lead the team. Sen- iors Emery Reno and George Hewitt will be tough to replace, but some of the iuniors and sophomores, with the added year of ex- perience, should take up the slack and help lead the team to a better season than this past one.
