We, the staff, feel that our life at Sunnyslope High School, as depicted and recorded by the yearbook, is similar to the varied interests at the Fair. We, at SHS, have four main interest areas and at the Fair, activities were divided into tour main groups. They are Instruc- tional, Physical, Organizational, and Recreational. Throughout the book we will endeavor to show you some of the activities at the Fair and their relationship to our activities in high school. Betty attended Sunnyslope High for three years under an unusual handicap but in that time she reaped many hon- ors and awards in various fields as a result of her well-planned labors. The Valhalla staff of 1959, humbly dedicates this book in fond memory to an out- standing Viking, Betty Ross. Mel? i B 1' if? gs. . L 1: E.. On the front of the build- ing is a glowing facade with a peace dove emblazoned upon it. The building stands before a quiet pool in the forests of Bel- gium. The reception building is to the fair as our instructions are to our lives at Sun- nyslope. The instructions we receive serve as the reception hall, or orientation cen- ter, for the rest of our lives. .-13- S'6'1WORS' Mr. Charles Davis Mr. Kenneth Sewright Mr. Fred McClure SENIOR i S W ACGOMP fsvswa-'ws' 35,3514 f'V04'Q Homecoming Queen-Pha Webber Homecoming King-Bill Mattingly Senior Day Princess at Tempe-Susan Walker Senior Day Princess at Tucson-Joyce Adams Annual Queen and Betty Crocker Award-Lois Noren Football Captain-Richard Tucker Outstanding Student Council Representatives- Pha Webber and Tom Abbott President of National Honor Society-Tom Abbott Sweetheart Queen-Mary Payton Sweetheart King-Jack Rohr First Principal to Naval Academy-Charles Sigwart DAR Award-Leieen Keenan My True Security Contest Winner-Tom Abbott Voice of Democracy Contest-Leieen Keenan American Field Service Student to Switzerland and Student Body President-Alan Harris Registration-Sept. 21 Senior Pictures-Sept. 25 Senior Day at Tempe-Oct. i8 Senior Day at Tucson-Oct. 25 Homecoming-Nov. 14 Senior Day at Flagstaff-Feb. 21 Junior-Senior Prom-May 2 Senior Ditch-day-May 25 All School Award Night-May 22 Baccalaureate-May 24 Graduation-May 27 X! If A Christmas pose. Do you remember how backward we were in giving the traditional school yell at the first as- sembly of the year? Soon with encouragement from their upper-classmen, we grew familiar with the school and participated in many assemblies, sports and class events. Now, with these mem- ories, the class of 1962 may look forward to our remaining years at Sunnyslope High School. fl i The year began with anxiety, nervousness, an- ticipation, and the thrill that must come to any Freshman. This airy-circular building designed by archi- tect Edward Stone spans 340 feet and has a central pool surrounded by growing trees. The building's spacious design is lighted through an exterior grill. Among the many interesting exhibits are an IBM Ramac electronic brain giving historical information in 10 languages, a daily fash- ion show giving people a look at the latest U.S. fashions, a scale model of Philadelphia, a Walt Disney movie, Cin- arama , and murals of the American scene. Just as the organization of the American Pavilion, depicts the various phases of American life, so our organiza- tional section depicts the various phases of school life. 6 9' V QR , X05 deo- 'X 7 C7 9' 9, 9008-M tfb X 5 K ey- 'lJX 23, xp X N' NX0 -98- Q'- .xx s.,k gf I5 x K 1 X Row One: Marilyn Carpenter, Carole Sickafoose, Kathy Buck, Velda Boren, Susan Walker, Cheryl Kamp, Pamela Walker, BeaAr1rLLikosar Row Two: Carol Love, Barbara Fuqua, Cindy Balogh, Glenda Lewis, Esperanza Villeverde, Linda Seago, Ro- berta Kramer, Nancy Smith, Virginia Watkins. To the staff, it is their brain- child, the fruit of their labor, their production. To the faculty and adminis- tration, it is sometimes a necessary evil, to the photography department, it is a chance to show their skills, to the art department, it is a place to try new techniques and styles. But though these are some parts the Valhalla enacts in the drama of our school life, the book is for the students, espe- cially the seniors, and we hope it will serve as a treasury of memories throughout your lives. As the World's Fair demonstrated and displayed the talents and ingeniousness of the world, we feel the Valhalla shows to its readers, the outstanding achievements and talents found at Sunny- slope High School. This year held many joys and sorrows for me in producing the book and I would like to gratefully thank the staff, .lim Grose, Tim Hoag, Sue Free- man McDonough, Gerry Schultz, Carole Sickafoose and Myrtle Pitts for sharing them with me. I would also like to thank our Art-Editor, Linda White, and her assistant, Paul Case, for their hard work in producing this year's book. Also special thanks to the whole Photography Department for coming through with the necessary pictures when we needed them most. The faculty and administration have proven very affable and tolerant and Mr. Kempff and Mrs. Griffith, in the business office, have also served us well. To these people, l am deeply grateful. But to Mr. Howard McCon- nell, our sponsor, my heart goes out in the deepest thanks and apprecia- tion for the work and assistance he gave so freely. I consider it one of the greatest honors in my high school career to have been able to serve you as Valhalla editor. I hope that the time I spent working with the staff can be multiplied over 'and over and the product measured in terms of enjoyment you get looking back at your annual. On the part of the staff, I would like to wish the faculty and administra- tion the continued admiration and respect of our student body, the future classesjll'SHS, a happy, fruitful quest for education, and the graduating sepi , alltthe success and prosperity in the woigzlraas they pursue their re voca io 's.
