The 1965-66 Homecoming Spirit was up in flames as the S.H.S. student body con- gregated for the traditional bonfire and pep rally. Following the city fire truck and a vig- orous rally squad, the team supporters moved to the four corners for another rally. The Toppenish Wildcats didn't stand a chance! The Grizzlies and the Wildcats moved onto the field for the game. Toppenish scored within the first few minutes of play, their one and only touchdown. The Sunnyside team was on the move and the score read 6-6 at the half. REPRESENTATIVES S.H.S. representatives to Boys and Girls State were, Linda Baurele, Leslie lones, Diane Schwab, Bill Bennett, Steve Allen, Wayne Lewis and Dale Gibson. Girls Stole Evergreen Girls State for 1965 was held on the campus of CWSC from June 14th to the 21st. lt was a week full of meeting and making new friends, talk- ing all hours of the night, and campaigning for of- fices. During the week Representative Don Moss and Senator Mike McCormick spoke. At the end of the week, a talent show and a candle lighting ceremony was held. Fifty girls were chosen to light each of the fifty candles that were placed on a replica of Wash- ington state. The inauguration of the state officials elected for Girls State was the same night. The week was too short. Departing from new friends was sad. Knowledge gained, and memories remembered were part of Girls State. Boys State The American Legion Evergreen Boys State is organized for training boys in the functionalaspects of being a good citizen. Boys State is conducted on a learning by doing basis, where selected youths practice the procedures and operations of political parties, the state legislature, and the various branches of city, county, and state government. The program is aimed at developing a more active and intelligent interest in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of a citizen. Dale Gibson, Bill Bennett, Steve Allen, and Wayne Lewis attended Boys State from Sunnyside. The qual- ities necessary for selection were: Leadership, Char- acter, Scholarship, Service to the Community, and Citizenship. SHS Tolo...Men In Motion Girls Pep Club sponsored the Winter Carousel. Leav- ing the halls of S.H.S. and looking toward a bright future, they glance back on happy memories. The Seniors of '66 never lacked the capacity to achieve their goals. The athletes, the scholars, the talented, the spirited and the ambitious united into one class. They were one class with the ability to lead, to learn, to respect and to have fun. Yes, they glance back on memories that they will cherish, but their thoughts turn quickly to the future and the treasures it holds. S.H.S. bids them farewell forever and goodluck foralways. And another is now beginning With experiences, exciting and new, But where will be the friends we love- The friends that we once knew? Those memories so dear and sweet: The laughter, the parties, and, Why even the salty tears Will be a part of the parade Of the slowly passing years. But even from chapter to chapter Some characters must remain, And all throughout the book We shall find their name. This, our consolation, We shall bear in mind: For there are some so very dear They cannot be left behind. Coach Rallis Coach Senn Coach Potter Q 2, ' fa- Managers: Don Duncan Mark Pfouts, and Carl lohn THE SEASON: After a year of setbacks the Grizzly football team came back fighting. They gave Davis, pre-season poll leader, a fight to the finish. At times the offense was lacking, but the defense picked the team up time and again. All in all, the season was very rewarding. Homecoming was the big- gest success in years. In '65, Sunnyside High School gained back the support of its main critics.. .the ADULTS. JAMBOREE: Sunnyside went to Ellensburg to play ball. The first game between Top- Hi and Sunnyside ended in a hard-fought tie. Next, the Grizzlies took on the Wapato Wolves and beat them 7-0. The Bulldogs of Ellensburg surprised Sunnyside with a win of 7-0. A three-way tie existed, with Sunny- side losing to the Bulldogs on first downs. DAVIS: A fired-up Grizzly squad battled Davis to a 14-0 defeat. Davis capitalized on a Sunnyside error to score one of its two touch- downs. Sunnyside's defense held the Pirates to its lowest score all season. All in all, the team displayed its potential to the fullest extent. PASCO: In the first half, Sunnyside had its troubles against a larger school. Pasco dominated all departments. An inspired Grizzly squad came out in the second half and evened up the contest. The Grizzlies lost by a score of 21-0, but the game was not thatonesided. PROSSER: ln a game played at Prosser, the offense finally jelled and the defense did an adequate job. Some exciting play prevailed during the whole game. Sunnyside won 20-14, giving them their first win in three games. TOPPENISH: Homecoming at Sunnyside this year was a wonderful success. Toppenish scored first, but after that Sunnyside com- pletely dominated the game. The Grizzlies could do nothing wrong. The final score was Sunnyside 32, Top-Hi 6. Sunnyside had its first conference win! WAPATO: The second conference game for Sunnyside was played at home. The Grizzlies and the Wolves battled to a 6-6 tie. The game was as even as the score. Mistakes on both sides kept the game as even as possible. WEST VALLEY: West Valley, the league lead- er, was waiting for Sunnyside to invade Ram- land. It was a game won on 4th downs. West Valley scored twice on 4th downs. A few bad breaks occurred and Sunnyside lost the game 13-6. ELLENSBURG: Winless Ellensburg came to Sunnyside an inspired team. They fought the Grizzlies on even terms. A last-minute drive by Sunnyside ended at the Ellensburg 4-yd. line, with an interception and the game was the Bulldogs' 13-7. GRANDVIEW: ln the last game of the season the Grizzlies showed exactly what the team was like. Grandview, using a power offense, could not score against the Grizzlies. Sun- nyside, using a man in motion offense, utilized a consistent ground game to defeat the Greyhounds. The final score was 7-0 in favor of Sunnyside. This left the Grizzlies a 2-2-1 conference record. T07 Q S. Kinsey N. Galey -lr? ,I , A , ,Qi sr. r ,am-nl'-14 R. Linehan R. Simmons ,bi . ,V ,Ni Left: D. Duncan G. Davis 'Q Q Left: K. All the newspapers, opponents, and avid sport fans of Sunny High decided that this just had to be a building year. All the team from last year was gone except three players. The new head coach, Bob Thomas developed his own style of basketball. Coming up from l.V. ball the Juniors had no trouble working into the starting line-up. However the returning letterman, the building blocks of the team had difficulty playing under the new type of coaching by Bob Thomas. The team ran, shot, and defensed into a fourth place surprise in the league. The Seniors on the team came through and developed into the basketball players they really were. Losing two games by total spread of 12 points to Wapato, league champions, beating Ellens- burg in their home gym, Sunnyside High School Basketball finished with 7-5 league record equalling that of last year's district going team. No team really beat Sunny- side, the team brought to Sunnyside a new style of play, team effort by the players, and exciting play enjoyed by all in attendance. lil Grizzlies As A Team and Individuals !
