However, it is certain that all of the reflections cast from this, the Mirror of '6l, will be pleasing. In years to come this Mirror will bring back memories of moments and events that will be recalled with the deepest of pleasure. Old friends and associates will re-live from these pages. Highlights of student life and activities long forgotten will be herein preserved for misty-eyed reminiscing. As some day you thumb through this treasury of souvenirs, may this question come to mind, Wl1ere else, but in America, could this have happened? Furthermore, as you ponder this question, may you resolve to help perpetuate the same opportunities for all who may follow in your footsteps. LEE A. COLBY Superintendent of Schools 6 Princzpal Mr. Henson Dear Students: The American secondary school is entering a new era of development and growth, Any teacher fortunate enough to be able to serve such a school system should be aware of the many problems that will arise in the near future. We, the administrators, the teachers, and the students will be given every opportunity to participate under improved conditions. How we avail ourselves of these opportunities will be entirely up to us. Let us at Sunnyside Senior High School be grateful that we may look to the future with security and confidence. HARRY BENSON, PRINCIPAL Sunnyside Senior High School 7 Mr. Aflmfgomer Wee-Superintendent The school board is responsible for the business transactions of the Sunnyside I Schools, and it is they who grant permission for clubs and groups to take out of town trips under the direction of the school, grant appropriations when needed, and consider suggestions as to how the efficiency and effectiveness of the schools may be increased. At the first of the year the members of an- nual staff have a short in- struction of the fundamentals Mr. Taylor is the instructor for Drivers' Training. This class is offered to anyone sixteen years of age. No credits are given for this class, and the time for it is taken from the students' study halls. Mr. Taylor teaches the students the laws and regulations that all drivers should know. The purpose of this class is to better inform the students about the driving laws, the car's operation, and the driver's responsibilities. Mrs. Moore and her librarians keep the library open and in operating condition to serve the students and teachers. They keep the books in order and re- paired. They also keep the library up to date with latest information and books to aid our education. The library staff works very hard and is a necessity to our school. 24 iiiiii.. of their job. Each member of the staff is assigned a specific section for which they are wholly responsible. Mr. Dickey, the advisor, oversees all the work that is done. pn Mrs. Smith is the teacher of all high school home economics classes. During the year, each girl is re- quired to complete a home project each semester. One semester of class time is spent on cooking and the study of foods, and the other semester is spent on sewing and knitting. 'Q wif .ir ,ily Williams Each boy in wood shop has his own shop projects. Mr. Senn, the teacher, helps each one of the stu- dents when he needs assistance or advice on his projects. In this man- ner the students learn the right Way to use the shop and the tools to produce very fine wood articles. A Miss Tracey is the arts and crafts teacher. During the year they study color and design as well as having other projects. Leather working, copper tooling, mosaics, and basket weaving are some of these other projects. Mrs. Martin and the office girls work together to take care of the business of the school. The girls learn to use the office equipment, and they learn the routine of office work. These students participate in the fields of debate, oral interpretation, oration, and extemporaneous speeches. From speech the students gain poise and confidence. The world problems class studies a generalized world history and all sections of the World. They observe very closely the world events of the day and try to compare them to some phase of history. Through this comparison they try to deter- mine the severeness and the effect that certain current events will have on history. All juniors are required to take United States History. Mr. Lind- quist is the teacher of this particu- lar class. They study the history, the government, and the problems of the United States. A victory bell and a jukebox were two of the purchases they made for the school, each of which soon came to occupy an important role in our extracurricular activities. Many things of great interest and significance were noteworthy, two of the most prominent being the advent of the admission of an exchange student program to be instituted and the lighting of our football field. They all spent many hours con- templating what could be done to best benefit the school and the students. STANDING: Don Senn, Student Council Chairmang Rick Thompson, Student Body Vice-President. The Curious Savage by john Patrick was the first play presented during the 1960-61 school year. The play presented delightful characters and amusing situations, although for the most part it was a comedy, a serious message comes through when a group of mentally disturbed patients show by their kindness and affection that they are superior to some of the greedy and dishonest people of the outside world. It makes no difference now, he can take the place of Larry. 11 This tense scene portrays the meeting of Larry's old girlfriends fiance. i'The girl he left behind. The Death and Life of Larry Benson was the second all-school play to be presented by the dramatics department. A serious and heart-warming drama, it tells the story of the Benson family and the strange boy who enters their home and claims to be the son they believed missing in action. The play was acclaimed by many to be the best play of- fered by Sunnyside High School in many yearsg it was attended by approximately four hundred people. The leading roles were filled by John Kenning, George Colby, Susan Hornstein, and Monica White. Others appearing in the play were Connie Ley, Susan Speck, Joyce Green, jo- anne Anthony, Bill Hitchcock, Barbara Stephens, Mike Gar- cia, Corrine McTimpeny, and Maynard Harrison. The play was directed by Mrs. Brauer with Diana Chapple as stu- dent director. Snaps fff JJ myers . 0 1' ' 1 E l I O Q C I ' .As F- P . A tough year for the home team is what we must brand our football season. With four members of our league ranked as top football teams in the state one might have thought that our efforts and team spirit would be daunted. However, led by Don Senn, fine passer and key ball handler the Grizzlies fought tooth and nail against the odds of speed and weight and never gave up putting forth their best individual efforts. Next year at Sunny Hi we will all miss the outstanding line play of stalwarts like Rick Thompson, john Shook, Bill Dietzen, Wayne Porter, Ron Senn, and jones Amoundson along with the running ability and determination of such men as Ellery Berg, Delbert Pilot, Dan Loose, and the above mentioned Don Senn, To our Grizzlies of 1960 we extend thanks for the color, excitement and joyous moments they provided. 'X Krflrfervurr Record Many records were set this year in basketball. Three of them were inf volx ed in the game between Sunnyside and Xxfapato. The first record to fall was the individual scoring performance for the Big 9 Conference. Charlie McMains, a senior guard, scored 58 points against the Xllfolfpack of Wziyvtttcm, with 32 coming from the field on his famous jumpshot from the far outside. At one point during the game MeMains hit six baskets in a row. He finished the first half with 12 field goals out of 111 attempts. He wound out the game fouling out in the -4th quarter with two minutes still left in the game. At that point he had made 16 field goals on 20 attempts. The other records were set by Sunnyside being the loser with 79 points, and Wfapato being the winner with 86. The sum of both scores constituted a record that will be noted for a long time. The basketball season as a whole for the Grizzlies was a xery successful One. Although not winning many games due to the lack of height, they pulled two of the biggest upsets of the year by beating Eisenhower and Richland, two of the top teams in the state. Witla their courage and determination of never giving up while they were behind, the Grizzlies of 1960-61 will long be remembered. The overall season record was 8 wins and 2 ties and 1 loss. Led by lettermen Maynard Harrison and Bob Miller for the boys with Sherry Marion and Ann Powell for the girls the team lost only to Wapato.
