The theme, Twilight Fantasy, was selected by the senior class, and decorations were planned and carried out by the various committees. Purple streamers, a painting of a sunset over the desert, and silver tumbleweeds gave the room atmosphere. At the entrance of the gym the couples crossed a small bridge to enter this dreamland of fantasy. During intermission an octet from Eisenhower High School sang. Thirty girls were selected from the sophomore class to be waitresses and served punch and cookies in night club fashion. Seniors Pat Birchard and John Amundson were co-chairmen for the event. 33 Junior- enior Banquet is 'ai The Hawaiian theme represented at the Junior-Senior ban- quet faded into memory, as Gale Liberty, master of ceremonies, gave the closing remarks of the evening. The miniature Hawaiian girls dressed in grass skirts and reclining under palm trees dec- orated the tables and walls. These decorations, along with various replicas ot Hawaii, now lie discarded and broken. But the mem- ories ot them will always remain in the minds of several seniors, juniors, Sunnyside High School teachers, and other honored guests. The banquet was opened by master of ceremonies, Gale Liberty. Al Van Tress, President of the junior class, gave the welcome and was answered with the response by Bob Thomas, senior class president. The will and prophecy were read by eight Sunnyside High School students. 34 Bingo Senior Party Dancing .gm 'I ' W ,W f 1' .. K' 'M V. M., 1 - . It was planned by parents and teachers, and Sunnyside merchants donated the prizes. Bingo was the most popular activity during the first part of the evening, but there was also dancing for those interested. At midnight the swimming pool opened. Following an hour of swimming, a movie, The Mating Game with Debbie Reynolds, was shown at the Liberty Theater. A breakfast of ham, eggs, pancakes, and milk was served at the high school when the movie was over. Parents chaperoned the party, dividing their duties into three shifts. Approx- imately l 19 seniors out of 170 took part in the festivities. 36 .,,.,-.oO195' ,,.. . 3. . ' f-aww. . . ..i,..i:. ,, . ,. Managers RON SENN RON PORTER The i958-59 basketball season was the best ever. Even though the team's record This year was i2 wins and 7 losses and they got in the District Tournament in fourth place, they came out in second place to go to the State Tournament for The first Time in Sunnyside's school history. The first 3 games, which were pre-season games, were played against the Grandview and Prosser teams. All 3 were won easily by a wide margin. The first season game was played against Kennewick, making it the first victory. The next game against Wapato was lost. In the following 2 games the Richland Bombers and the Toppenish Wildcats were beaten. The Grizzlies lost their next 2 games To Davis and Pasco by one point. Sunnyside took their next game against Eisenhower, but lost to Ellensburg. The Grizzlies lost 3 and won 5 in the second half of the season. The B squad did a good iob under Mr. Borreson's coaching. They won T4 out of 20 played. 97 State Tournament The Grizzlies entered the State Tournament by defeating Eisen- hower and Wapato, then losing to Richland and coming back and defeating Wapato for the second time. The first day Sunnyside played Kelso and won 50-41. The next day Sunnyside played Ballard. In the last two seconds of the game Dave Thompson sank a basket to win the game 52-51. This put Sunnyside into the Semi-Finals, they were to play Burlington-Edison. The next game Sunnyside lost by a score of 55-57. The final game Sunnyside came up against Snohomish. lt was very nerve shaking until the horn sounded. Sunnyside came out ahead 57-56 and were third in state. This was the first time Sunnyside has ever played in the State Tournament. This iob was done very well by the basketball players and their coach. We all are very proud of them. Dave Thompson, Captain of the Grizzlies, was voted onto the All State Team and also placed second in the scoring field. I00 T959 marked another new for Sunnyside High School. The Athletic Depart- ment started wrestling in its program for the first year. Coach Frank Sarno started the squad off slowly with only six matches. Grandview, Prosser, and Eisenhower were the schools that the Grizzlies participated against. The season record was 2 wins-4 losses. The boys started out slowly and reached their peak by the Sub-District Tourna- ment. In the Sub-District, David Treat placed fourth and Tom Saltz first. Tom went on to the District in Cheney and placed first again. The following week at the State Tournament, after Tom had won his first match, he came down with the flu and was beaten 7-6 by the champion. Tom is only a iunior and we are looking for great improvement from him next year. Others on the squad were: Ty Petrich DeeVon Hall .ss, ,...,. l O6 lbs. Jerry Stickley ,,o,,,, ,,,,,. l l5 lbs. After a slow start the teams depth began to show and signs of individual improvement were very apparent. The team record was 6 wins and 2 losses. This record was marked by Sunnyside defeating the Tri-Cities-Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland-on their respective courts. This was the first time in history the Sunnyside team had done this. Individually 72 matches were won and 45 were lost during the course of play. Led by Bob Jackson and Daryl Jackson the boys put on good showings all year. For the girls Carla and Sherrie Marion held down the first two spots for the maiority of the season. One of the main factors of success was the help received from the Junior High, along with a large number of sophomores. At the sub-dis- trict Bob Jackson teamed with Maynard Harrison, they won there and went to the finals in district before they were defeated. Daryl Jackson won 3 straight sub- district matches and then lost in his district bid. However enough points were gathered to put Sunnyside at the top of the Southern Division or Lower Yakima Valley and 4th place in the entire Yakima Valley. With promising talent coming up, plus only three graduating seniors this year, the team looks forward to another very successful season in 1960. This year we had the honor of having Mr. Roger Dickey as tennis coach. This being his first year at Sunnyside, he did a tremendous iob by his winning personality and technique. This is the first time in l3 years Sunnyside has won sub-district and had winners in district tournament. The whole school congratulates Mr. Dickey for the outstanding iob he did with the team. Wmsfl' Aren't they the ginchiest? This year the track season started off with some returning boys from last year and a few of last year's Junior High stars. The first track meet was held here. The Grizzlies did a good iob and came out in 2nd place. The next meet at Grandview was successful as Sunnyside came in second place. Moses Lake was the scene for Sunnyside's third track meet. Out of 36 schools participating, the Grizzlies came in seventh. In the fourth meet Sunnyside won top honors with Toppenish placing 2nd. The Eisenhower Invitational, in which Eisenhower took ist, Wapato 2nd, Grandview 3rd, and Sunnyside Lith, was the Grizzlies fifth meet. In the Toppenish night meet Sunnyside came in 2nd place once again. At the Highland meet the Sunnyside track team came in Qnd. At Sub-District, Sunnyside came in 2nd, qualifying 7 students for District tournament.
