After June, the Sunnyside High School as we know it today will no longer exist. The fond dream of many students has at last been realized. The Class of 755 will graduate from a new high school. The Class of ,541 will probably never again come together as a unit. Members will follow divergent interests and enter varied fields of service. For a lifetime this book will be the basis of delightful reminiscing and ever-deepening pleasure. The juniors and sophomores will carry on the traditions and standards set up by those who have graduated before them with renewed vigor and interest. THE 1954 MIRROR is dedicated to the last Associated Student Body of the old Sunnyside High School. The recording of history is as important as the making of history. Between the covers of THE MIRROR are pictured important happenings in student life, as well as portraits of the administration, faculty, and students of this period. May it always bring you pleasant memories. A X I I MIM WI 42 5 if 5 I '56 a Q 4. 5 sau +I he-ij I f' ' fill! In the past year you have shown the the administration that you have the tential for good citizenship and for work in any field of endeavor that choose. It is our wish that you have the greatest success in your future life and that some of the tools of learning that we have handed you will be of some value in keeping you a good American. KENNETH RABY Principal This yearbook comes to you at one of the most joyous and faculty and greatest po- Y outstanding you should 3 :,fQff f --qfiis J .. ,i eliswft I have never read any great atomic, world-shaking state- ments made by Superintendents in an annual message. How- ever, appreciation for work accomplished is never trite, and can very well be electrifying. You, who have worked diligently on this annual, deserve the highest praise from your fellow senior. The joy that comes from doing something with a high degree of excellence, and the appreciation of others are your rewards for developing a fine annual. Although this is the last annual to be issued from the old Sunnyside High School, may it be the best. Let me add my congratulations to you and your advisor, Mrs. Ludwig, for doing a splendid work. K. P. MALLERY Superintendent also one of the most important periods of your lives. Some of you are just beginning many years of intensive higher edu- cation in preparation for a chosen profession. For others it is the end of twelve years of institutional education. Regardless of individual status, each of you has thus far.been the re- cipient of one of America's rich and priceless gifts to its young, a free education. This treasure is given to use for per- sonal benefit and gain, for the enjoyment and enrichment of the society in which you are to live, and for service to the God who made it possible. SOPHOMORE CLASS Members of the class of '56 have demonstrated their qualities of leadership by sharing the responsibilities of school activities. They underwent the trials of lower classmen and made the adjustments to their new surroundings in a satisfactory manner. Early in the year they elected the following class officers: Jerry Schwenk, Presidentg Eddie Chavezg Vice Presidentg Becky Haskins, Secretaryg John Donnally, Treasurerg and Bob Colby, Program Chairman. Mr. Blume, Mrs. Bilger, and Mr. Williamson were the Faculty Advisors. One of the social highlights of the year was a sophomore class party in December. The athletes of this class have had prominent places in both winter and spring sports. The HB Squad cheerleaders were also elected from the group. We predict a most successful junior and senior year for this class. FOOTBALL The 1953 Sunnyside Grizzlies proved to be a credit to their school as they hustled their way through a nine game schedule. The final output showed six victories and three defeats. It was a strong forward wall ahead of fleet backs with a well rounded passing attack which made the Grizzlies a formidable foe for all opponents. This team will long be remembered for its ability to constantly thwart the enemy with gallant goal line stands. Graduating seniors who turned in outstanding performances throughout the season were: Dick Chambers, Mike Hoffman, Bob Kellogg, Guy Looney, .lack Merriman, Bob Munson, Phil Needham, Bill Russell, Don Sayler, Raulie Slater, and Dave Stark. The team selected Don Saylor as its honorary captain and Dave Stark as its inspirational award winner. 4 -'rw Q 5 ,p,,.fw V237 52 Gixard E J ssyy Q 4 'S S2 Q swf SCHEDULE Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside Sunnyside ,,fs,1i .'.L 5: eu' K T First row: Jerry Schwenk. BA KETBALL The Grizzly hoopsters had an up-and-down season as they seemed to be the uhard- luckv team of the Valley. This is Sunnysideas second season in the NAA league and the team played the toughest competition in the history of the school. The local cagers lost many of their games by one or two point margins. Sunnyside looked good in the pre-season tilts where their chief accomplishment was to upset Walla Walla, the state,s top team. Spearheading the Grizzlie's attack was senior Don Saylor. He was listed as one of America's 500 best high school basketball players and was one of the high-ranking scorers of the AAN League. He was also on the All-Valley Team. Next year's team should be promising as seven sophomores and juniors are re- turning to the A squad. KOTTWITZ NIR. BOXING Forty-one boys greeted boxing coaches, Dick Jacobson and Bob Smith, at the initial work-outs. The boys worked hard and long, devoting much time and effort to become possible contenders to repeat the position they held as valley boxing cham- pions during the 1952-1953 season. With many returning lettermen including five former valley champions the l953- 1954- squad started slowly, losing close hard-fought matches to Colfax and twice to Prosser. However, as the training tempo was stepped up to ready the boys for the Valley Tournament, they swept through matches with Toppenish, Cle Elum and Crand- view to move into contention to determine the valley boxing championship. At press time the valley boxing crown looked to be avtoss-up between the teams from Prosser, Toppenish, and Sunnyside. This was evident by the large enthusiastic group of boys who turned out under the direction of Coach Walt Eriksen and Athletic Director, Mike Kuchera. The squad had two returning lettermen who formed the backbone of the team. Don Sayler, who holds the school record in the 880, and represented Sunnyside at the State Finals in 1952 and 1953, was one of the biggest assets to the squad. He competed in the 4-40, 880, shot put, javelin, sprints and relay. The discus and shotput were taken care of by Gary Turner. Turner and Don Sayler were strong members of the relay team. There were several newcomers to track who earned their places on the team this year, turning in fine performances and labeling themselves as definite contenders. At the end of a successful season the boys attended the sub-district tournament May 16 at Grandview. The boys placing in this meet went to the District Tourney May 22. The State Finals were held at Pullman May 28-29.
