W 625585 F Class of '46 Sunny Hi has had many great classes pass through its portals, but 'none surpassing the Class of '46. Through four years of trial and tribulation, the class has gathered various personalities to make up a unified group. Intelli- gence, one of the most evident features of the class, is supplemented by liveli- ness, leadership, citizenship, and talent-both artistic and musical. Each year a class party has been held with much success. Before the Junior year many of the STUDENT GOVERNMENT seats were filled by members of the present Class of '46. The goal is at last at hand. The planning, cramming, excitement, and mortar board -time have arrived. High school days for the Class of '46 will now exist only in memory, but their influence will continue to be felt around Sunny Hi. Executive Council Sunny Hi may well be proud of the student self-government, of which the chief exponent is the Executive Council. Its members meet once a week to discuss problems, authorize expenditure of money for various projects, and in every way possible serve to further the students' interests. One of the major accomplishments of the year was the completion of the Lincoln Field Fence, which this body had been promoting for the past two years. ' Student Council The Student Council started a busy year in September after a new chair- man was elected. Bill Green, the original Chairman, was called into the Marines and Mary Horton took his place by popular vote. During the course of the year many problems were talked over and acted upon. On March Sth both the Student and Executive Councils attended the annual Yakima Val- ley Student Conference in Yakima. Through discussion and lectures the mem- bers learned much of value. E Girls' Club To start the year off the annual Big-Little Sister party was held. The main events of the year were meetings of the study groups which included music, art, book reviews, and travel. These groups were conducted by women of the community and met once every three weeks. In addition, several general meetings were held in which such subjects as personality were discussed by the women of the faculty. The officers were as follows: President, Charlot Van Belleg Vice-Presi- dent, Mora Ecksteing Secretary, Virginia Duncang Treasurer, Mary Louise Schut: and Program Chairman, Mary Horton. Miss McKee was the advisor. Boys' Club With Paul Henley in charge, the Boys' Club held regular meetings under the supervision of Mr. Don Anderson. This year the entertainment during the meetings consisted of different speakers, movies, and wrestling matches. The clubsponsored intramural games in basketball. The officers were as follows: President, Paul Henleyg Vice-President, Gene Carlyleg Secretary, Frank Schilperoortg Treasurer, John Crawfordg Ser- geant-at-Arms, Guy Roberts and George Goetz. 37 HI-Y CROW 13 B. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high stand- ards of Christian character. The group has one social function each month in addition to attending church in a body. They have been especially active around Sunny Hi when a group was needed to sell food at home games. The keen enthusiasm and fine spirit of the boys, together with the excellent advice of Mr. Grafious, made for a very successful yeafr. Officers were: Le- Roy Isherwood, President, David Van Eaton, Vice-Presidentg Claude Fredricks, Secretary-Treasurer, and Bill Cable, Chaplain. Camera Club Under the able direction of Mr. Ralph Johnson, the Camera Club has been very active this year. The students mastered handling the camera, stud- ied camera techniques, learned to develop their own snapshots, and to en- large originals. Fire Squad Absolutely necessary to the smooth operation of any high school is this organization. This year, the squad devised a substitution plan for drills, where- by certain exits were blocked by fire. Leading the group were Francis Clarke, Chlefg Stan Hanris, Assistant Chiefg and Joan McCaig, Secretary. Thespians The Thespians, under the direction of Miss Kildow, had a lot of fun working together this year. In their meetings, they studied make-up, acting principles, and radio dramatization. Soon after the Senior Play, eight new members were initiated. They presented ha1f,time entertainment at a basket- ball game and a skit for the American Legion Auxiliary. Thespian officers were: President, Donna Eshelmang Vice-President, Peggy Ledinghamg Secretary- Treasurer, Margaret Benedettig Clerk, Dick Myers and Reporter, Betty Curtis. 39 fx if f' N. fx' HONOR SOCIETY CROW 15 D. Intramural tournaments in basketball and a night basketball game held the attention of all participating. Hikes were also enjoyed by the organization. This club enables the girls to earn points which make them eligible for the Girls' Letter Club. Officers for the year were: President, Irene Kaiserg VicelPresident, Lola Ammermang Secretary, Arlene Malingg Treasurer, Dora- deen Hansen, Play and Program Chairman, Miriam Asselstineg and Advisor, Miss Charlotte Kane. Debate Competing in several debates with teams from Selah, Yakima, Wapato, Pasco, and other valley towns, our teams won all their debates. The question debated upon was, Should the Federal Government Establish a Columbia Valley Authority? They attended the State tournament held at Washington State College and won two out of six debates. In the valley contest held at Wapato, Joan White and Carl Fuchs won first place in the debate, Carl Fuchs won first place as Best Speaker, and he also won second place in the extempor- aneous class. Mr. Grafious instructed the group. Girls' Leiter Club The members of the Girls' Letter Club are required to have earned a lettetr before they may join. Responsibilities of play days are placed upon their shoulders. At the football games the girls sell candy and pop and they are ushers at the basketball games. This year they sponsored the Pep Club which was a very active organization. 41 LIBRARY STAFF Row 1: Allen, Plumb, Rawlings, McIntosh,Bowman, Asselstine, Kaiser, Row 2: Olson, Andrus, Johnson, R i c e , Thompson, Green, Smith, Adv. Fellows who have earnedat least one varsity letter in any of the major sports are members of the organization. Lettermen returning from last year were Roberts, Carlyle, Schilperoort, Poirier, Freder- icks, MacDonald, Partch. The ,45 season was opened with a jamboree at Kennewick. The two best games were the one with Wapato, won by MacDonald's field goal 3-0, and the Prosser game in which the power- ful Grizzlies bowled over their traditional rivals 20-0. 46 W F.--1 ..-v-'-- ..-w..,..- W A ,, , Q , 1 Season Gi '45 Co-captains were Claude Fredericks, left half and winner of the Inspiration Cup, a'nd Paul Henley, left end. Letter winners numbered 20, and Coach Sen'n is looking forward to next year with hopes for a lot of wins and a high place in the newly revived league. 47 Basketball Starting the season in full stride. this year's Grizzly court squad showed real speed and fire, combined with clever ball handling and straight shooting, which qualified them as a def- inite threat for the valley title, Winning their first five tussles before they slowed their pace was one ofthe Grizzlies' achievements. Then apparently going into a slump, but showing winning form off-and-on, the squad was beaten out of a berth in the valley tournament in a season-ending game with Paseo. Under the capable coaching of Clem Senn, the Grizzlies are waiting: for next year's sea- son with four returning lettermen. 48 iistmnu. o Q HAH!! Cawfsfoam fs. EAW? G. Baseball Taking over at the helm of baseball, after his discharge from the navy, was Coach George Blume. With many returning lettermen this year, and more for next year's squad, the Grizzlies biggest setback was their lack of power from the pitching mound. Starting the season was a returning pitcher, George Pitzer, who injured his arm midway through the season. Tom Dil- lon, assisted by Bob Maling, then took over for Sunnyside, and pitched the Grizzly nine through a fairly successful year. 50 Row 1: M. Partch, P. Stephens, J. Billington, R- Weamer, K. Ball Editor - Jodie Kill Our Advisor DEDICATION TO TRAVIS SEIBERT God's Child and Yours I'lI lend you for a little time a child of mine, He said, For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he's dead. It may be six or seven years or twenty-two or three But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me? He'II bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief, You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down here, I want this child to learn. l've looked this wide world over in search of teachers true And from the things that crowd Life's lane l have decided You. Now will you give him all your love nor think the labor vain And hate Me when l come to call to take him back again? I fancy that I heard them say Dear Lord, Thy Will be done. For all the joy this child will bring The risk of grief we'Il run, We'Il shelter him with tenderness we'II love him while we may And for the Happiness we've known forever grateful stay. And should the angels call for him much sooner than we planned We'll brave the bitter grief that came and try to understand. - Author unknown .. it ' r I . L W urs If Our hearts and our minds We would like to share this poem that was given to us just one year ago. This was written by Dinah Wie- chart in memory of our son and brother, Micheal A. Whitling. We lost Mike August 21, 1983. Mike We are so unsure of death that we ask so many questions, with no one having the answers but only a few suggestions. We think of your son and others - it just seems to be unfair, how the Lord takes them so quickly when they surely are not prepared. --- .1 Y ffwvv' hear but in their Dinah - V . , s Yoga 'j effd This is the crib that Micheal made just before he died. In Loving memory of Uncle Mike, I mourn for you in silence, No eyes can see me weep, But many a silent tear is shed, while others are asleep. God gave me strength to bear it, and courage to face the blow: But what it meant to give you up, No one will ever know. You'll always be remembered and tears will come and go: Never will you be forgotten, For I still Love and Miss You So With Love, Mikie 85 SENICRS R A T send, L. Degen, C. Seffernrck, J. Hoskins. There were four seniors on the team: Troy Keysor, Tony Kahle, Joe Hoskins and Mark Keller. The beginning of the year was a little rough so many of the younger players saw some action. Both Varsity and JV were 3-7 in the league and the Varsity won the last 5 out of 7 games to build momentum going into tournament. The Cats won their first tournament game since 1981 against Crestview. Spencerville won 60-56 with Keysor be- ing high scorer of the game. But the Cats lost against Antwerp in the second game. Tony Kahle was elected Captain of the team. Most Valuable Player for the team was a tie with Tony Kahle, Joe Hoskins and Troy Keysor. Top Re- bounder was Troy Keysor, Most Assists went to Tony Kahle. Defensive MVP was Joe Hoskins. Steve Meyer had the highest free-throw percentage, shooting 512. Troy Keysor also made All League Team , chosen from all the coaches in the conference. - Paulding N n oxvllle W . K Wi L TYOY KGYSOY Joe Hoskins Tony Kohle Mark Keller mmf Qt-of an Row 3: D. Cox, J. Holding the leading scorers down for each team for the Bearcats was the task. The Lady Cats played ex- cellent defense wherever they went. The Varsity team ended their season 5-4 in the conference, while the Junior Varsity team ended their season with a terrific record of 7-2 tieing them for second place in the Northwest Conference. The Lady Cats were defeated by the Crestview Knights in tournament action. The Varsity also tied the record for the most wins finishing with a record of 10 wins and 10 losses.
