The 1988-89 ASB Cabinet Dear Friends. This year ' s ASB was real real neat. It was an experience that could never be beat. We got the job done. Even though it wasn ' t all fun. From homecoming to prom. Well, we always got along. The ASB cabinet sure was keen. The whole, whole year, no one was mean. Turbo Garcia was real, real cool. He made it so fun to help our school. We bought new flags, had games at lunch. And increased school spirit a whole big bunch. Thank you students for giving it your all. It made the year a real rad ball. As a member of The Accolade team, one learns to un- cover the truth, and solely carries upon his shoulders the responsibility of expos- ing that truth to his peers. As a result, he achieves a feeling of accomplish- ment and pride that none other club or organization can match. Our success in life can only be achieved with the containment of three things, determi- nation, dedication, and desire. The strength, power, and prestige of Ac- colade depend immensely upon the incorporation of these three qualities in a single mind, and only those who con- sist of all three are the members of The Accolade. Priya Krishnan, Jessica Harper, David Borsari, Helen Chen, Ron Strauss Sunny Hills Academic Decathlon tri- umphed again this year! Despite the overwhelmingly tight schedules of ev- ery team member and coach, we managed to meet several times dur- ing the summer and at least twice a week since school began in Septem- ber. The meetings weren ' t all fun. but they contributed to the excite- ment of being on OCAD. Studying physics, math, literature, art (with an excellent study guide from t[ !rs. Bar- bara Kilponen), geography (thanks to divine wisdom and support from Wr Dick Reed), socialism, and the U.S. presidency, while perfecting an origi- nal speech, and doing practice inter- views and essays demanded the ut- most of everyone on the team. With immeasurable help from coaches Mr. Don Joynt and Mrs. Ediynn Zimmerman the team answered the challenge with a 1st place victory in our region and a 3rd place triumph in Orange County. We carried on the SH tradition and now pass the torch to next year ' s team. (Who have probably already started studying!) IB. has a negative connotation: long hours of study, sleepless nights, endless assignments, and not to mention a bunch of nerds. To those involved in the pro- gram, it ' s not an image, it ' s reality, and sometimes things can get pretty lonely in the world of IB. The IB. club, in only its second year of existence at Sunny Hills, finally amended its constitution and held a very successful donation at S.H. for the Armenian earthquake vic- tims. Most important the club was suc- cessful in the making of wonderful ac- quaintances and friendships. Special thanks to Mr. Meiger and Mrs. Tayeor for their support and help in the dona- tion, and our supervisor. Mrs. Mason, for her everlasting patience. To the future president of this club. Although inexperience, illness, and in- jures plagued the 88-89 girls varsity basketball team, the season still de- serves a round of applause. We learned that unity is essential in the making of a team and that dedication is necessary if any of the hours of prac- tice are to pay off. The team pro- gressed with each passing game and the outlook for the years to come seems hopeful considering the many young players that are rapidly devel- oping into fine athletes. The pace accelerates and the year Just completed has seemed as though it has been a blur One needs to take time out to smell the roses , step back, slow down and enjoy the ac- tivities, educational and co-curricular of high school. Look, remember and enjoy once again all that transpired during this 1988-89 school year. For the Class of 1989 a big thank you for four great years of co-curricular and academic achievement The class of 1989 has achieved a great deal over the past four years and I expect they will continue to succeed at whatever they do in the future. Best of luck and best wishes to each of you as you continue your journey through life. Being; nothing The first glance, it seemed ordi- nary, a clear glass marble sitting on a scarred and beaten desk top cluttered witti crackers and pickles buried beneath a torrent of empty pages, keys, matches, pens and a piece of hair. It took on color, a light translucent blue. Unlike the sky, unlike the sea, it was more like an early morning haze |ust before the sun would re- veal his golden face to glare at the gnarled trees, frail leaves, and dried grass of an imperfect earth. The inert mass balanced uneasily, trembling with the table and sour pickles. Its imperfections were more noticeable now, in fact, they grew. They conquered the marble ' s original opulence. The scars cut into the glass. Bubbles were trapped inside. There were no screams, tantrums, only silence, silence deeper than the emptiness of space. No resent- ment, no fear, no laughter; no re- gret. It was cold, indifferent, trans- parent, without a core; heartless. It was a unification of chaos. A deceptive friend ' s hand flicked it across the table. It reflected empty pages, colored markers, and a match book as they passed. Then, it hesitated in front of the dead piece of hair, pondering. The marble caught a last reflection of a brass lamp as it held on to the edge and surveyed what had passed. Then gravity took him. Heather Shae Miessner 327 Kristin Basaione I have found what others may have not I have found you, and you are very special to me You are hke a rose on a bright spring morn Whose color cannot be forgot. Whose shape is always clear and sharp to see Whose beauty is not made but rather born. And like that rose who in that morning. Will touch the heart in many ways, You have done just that to me. You have shown me caring And how to give that care away Away in love, and not in pride so others may see. You have shown me strength And how to build and use it. Use it so that I may learn. And to use it to great length. The knowledge of strengths great benefit. For this is what I yearn. But through it all you have shown me one That is greater than the rest And this by far is the greatest one of all. Love through all hath won. By far I will call this one the best. For it, as they say, will conquer all. But like that rose I know will fade There is the difference tween you and it. For you shall last forever in my heart. I tried not to be intimidated Tried new things and made new friends And as quickly as it started My first year found an end. So began my Sophomore year The newness wore away Counting down to vacation Day by Day by Day. To graduate they made me take Health and Driver ' s Ed. I still did all my homework Before I went to bed. Junior year came and went The bottom of the top I ditched a class here and there Ignored the word STOP . Some say with academics This year ' s the hardest one My friends and I still found time To have our share of fun. Finally I am a Senior This is the year of years From all perspective colleges I wait patiently to hear. I look now to the future Full of hopes and dreams Amazed at just how long ago All of High School seems. anonymous Jamey Aplin Editor: Jill Payne Art Editor: Shannon Lewis Busine ss Manager: Dana Freeman Copy Editor: Audrey Angulo Photo Editor: (Susan Kang Alice Kim Cecilia Kim Allison Lee 6a rah Lee Cynthia Lewallen Mar) ' Beth Mallon Kelley McArthur Avani Patel Jennifer Wintrode Alison Poggi Melissa Porter (Staff: Greg Pomey Jeannie Ahutin Derick Poselli Wendy Barnett Jami Pussell Cindy Chang 6hauna Smith Shawn Choi Kim Young Mylene Dela Posa Erica Haga Cover design by Jennifer Hama Shannon Lewis Helios Staff- our conlribulion student Contributions 331 L 332 -UttyniAA..
